The driver parked the car as usual and left.
The vibration of her phone in her bag made Chi Mu Jiu pause while entering her password. She frowned slightly, a wave of inexplicable anxiety washing over her. When she saw that it was a call from Du Heng Yan, she felt a sudden emptiness in her heart. She clearly hadn’t done anything wrong, so why did she feel this strange sensation?
“It took you so long to answer; did I interrupt your press conference?”
Du Heng Yan’s lazy voice came through the phone, still tinged with sleep. The familiar tone eased Chi Mu Jiu's nerves a little.
“No, your call came at just the right time. I just got home.” She tried to make her voice sound calm and natural.
“Was everything smooth today? The press conference should still have the banquet; why did you come back so early?”
Du Heng Yan propped himself up slightly, but his hand never left his phone. He had been busy tidying up both inside and out until after three in the morning last night. He truly missed the days when she was around.
Food could be eaten anywhere, but Chi Mu Jiu’s single remark encapsulated all that had happened today. She didn’t want Du Heng Yan to worry about her, nor did she want him to know about the chaos and troubles she had faced.
“Didn’t get enough rest? You sound exhausted.” She shifted the conversation to him.
“Sweetheart, you’re so concerned about me; I’m just a bit tired, it’s normal.”
Du Heng Yan picked up on her implication that she didn’t want to discuss the press conference in detail. He chuckled softly, his gaze falling on the phone screen that lit up on the bedside table.
“Du Heng Yan?! You’re not going back to your old profession, are you?!”
Late Mu Jiu was feeling anxious and excited.
"What are you thinking? Why are you so worried about me?"
Du Hengyan's tone carried a mix of helplessness and affection.
"Didn't you say this is normal?"
Du Hengyan paused for a moment.
"I misspoke, darling. Don't take it to heart."
Late Mu Jiu knew he wouldn't be at the male model shop anymore.
"When will you come?" she asked tentatively.
Part of her wanted to see him, and part of her was concerned about the gambling event abroad tomorrow.
"You know, things are a bit complicated overseas compared to here. However, from what I said, there are still three days left until I leave."
Du Hengyan lit a cigarette but didn't smoke it.
"See you in three days."
Late Mu Jiu let out a long sigh of relief in her heart.
"Du Hengyan," she called softly.
"Yes? I'm here."
Seeing that she didn't respond, Du Hengyan spoke again.
"Don't worry, three days will pass quickly. Once you're home, make sure to rest well and let me know if you need anything."
"Okay."
After hanging up the phone, Late Mu Jiu stepped into her home. As the password lock beeped, the door closed behind her.
The shoes at the entrance were neatly arranged. Just as Shimu Jiu was about to take off her high heels, she caught a whiff of a bitter rose scent. An ominous premonition instantly filled her heart.
