"Had it not been for me this time, would you have deliberately lost the bet and overturned the table?"
His words struck a chord in Chi Mu Jiu, stirring a pang of bitterness within her. She hadn’t expected the young lady of the Chi family to possess such a strong sense of patriotism. Was she truly willing to fulfill her father's words and forsake her small family for the greater good?
There was a clear note of reproach in his tone, yet Chi Mu Jiu found herself unable to feel anger. "You decide on matters of life and death; at least for now, it's my call."
She listened quietly to his admonishments, neither angry nor noisy, simply nuzzling against him, seeking warmth and comfort. Her heart raced as she felt his presence.
After a moment of silence, Chi Mu Jiu suddenly spoke up, "Du Heng Yan, I want to hear you speak the truth."
Her gaze was fixed intently on Du Heng Yan, filled with anticipation and seriousness.
Du Heng Yan frowned slightly, puzzled. "What do you mean? Everything I just said was the truth."
Chi Mu Jiu was momentarily at a loss for words, unsure how to respond. She then gently shook her head and said, "Not about that."
Du Heng Yan looked at her, a smirk playing on his lips as he stood up and effortlessly lifted her into his arms, striding towards the sofa with steady steps.
Chi Mu Jiu had grown accustomed to his habit of picking her up without warning; she merely blushed slightly without resisting.
Once seated on the sofa, Du Heng Yan gently placed her on his lap. One arm wrapped around her slender waist while the other rested on the armrest of the sofa, his posture relaxed and comfortable.
"What else do you want to hear from me?" he teased as he ruffled her hair.
"Are you scared? If it weren’t for you this time, would you be afraid?"
Du Heng Yan gazed into her beautiful eyes that sparkled with unshed tears.
"You know the answer." He caressed her delicate face gently, his voice soft yet firm.
Not only was she afraid, but even more so than you.
In his deep-set eyes, she saw a seriousness and reluctance she had never encountered before.
Chi Mu Jiu realized that this man had truly fallen in love with her.
There was actually one more thing she hadn’t managed to say.
Chi Mu Jiu spoke softly, “What is it?”
Du Heng Yan asked with a low and gentle tone, his voice resonating like a soothing breeze.
“After the calamity, I just want to see you.”
“We’ve already met, but it’s not after the calamity,” Du Heng Yan replied, his voice as soft as a whisper, brushing against her ears and bringing a sense of warmth.
“What does that mean?” she asked, puzzled.
“Reunion after a long separation,” Du Heng Yan answered lightly, a slight smile playing at the corners of his mouth, revealing a hint of tenderness.
Yet Chi Mu Jiu could feel the depth of longing and affection hidden within those seemingly casual words.
“Do you want to rest here for a while? You look exceptionally beautiful today.”
Du Heng Yan’s gaze fell on Chi Mu Jiu as he gently caressed her face, savoring the softness of her delicate skin.
It was all too obvious.
Although her makeup today was modest, it was indeed heavier than usual, meant to conceal the weariness in her expression.
She had thought she could remain inconspicuous, but Du Heng Yan had seen right through her.
Chi Mu Jiu felt that there were no secrets left between them; every subtle change about her was captured by Du Heng Yan’s keen eyes.
Du Hengyan paused, seemingly contemplating her question.
"Are you referring to buying insurance?"
"What?! You know that too? Is there no privacy left?"
Someone was losing their mind.
Du Hengyan held her flailing hands down, smiling without saying a word.
"Don't move around. If I decide to do something here, no one will be able to save you."
"Okay."
She became obedient once again.
