She felt as if she were about to drown in the man's deep, affectionate gaze. Her heart ached, truly ached.
"I'm sorry, I'm not..."
The words trembled on her lips, but the latter half stuck in her throat, refusing to come out.
Du Hengyan stood too close, and she could clearly feel the warmth of his slightly hurried breath against her face. His stern expression was taut, his brows furrowed deeply as he looked at her, as if trying to see right through her.
"You avoid me, and it makes me very sad."
Her heart twisted painfully at his words.
"I can explain. Let me go, and we can talk this through."
Upon hearing this, Du Hengyan let out a faint sigh, a hint of helplessness flickering in his eyes. Slowly, he released her and sat down on the nearby sofa.
She immediately sat up straight, taking a deep breath as if summoning all her courage before slowly asking, "Did you tell Pei Jin that the goods are... drugs?"
Her expression was filled with tension and worry.
"Yes."
Du Hengyan's response was brief and calm; he didn't even look at her face as he softly replied.
Her heart sank suddenly, as if a heavy stone had dropped into it.
That was two tons of drugs! If this were in the country, it would mean the death penalty—enough to be sentenced a thousand times over!
Du Hengyan was about to say something more when he noticed Shi Mu Jiu absentmindedly pulling out her phone.
He frowned slightly, yet a smirk tugged at the corners of his mouth.
"What? Planning to call the police on me?"
He teased lightly.
"Du Hengyan, you have to understand—this is two tons of drugs!" Shi Mu Jiu nearly shouted, her mental defenses crumbling under the weight of the situation.
She paused for a moment, her voice firm and resolute: "It's not about capturing you; it's about capturing us. This drug is something I won for you, so we should share it together."
Du Chengyan found her serious expression almost amusing, nearly laughing out loud. Especially that phrase about sharing stirred something deep within him, easing his irritation considerably. Although the words sounded ominous, he felt a strange sense of warmth.
With a smile, he said, "Then why don't you call the police?"
As he spoke, Du Chengyan leaned back against the sofa, wearing an utterly relaxed expression as he watched Chi Mu Jiu, his eyes reflecting indifference.
"Aren't you afraid?" Chi Mu Jiu asked him.
"Feel free, madam," Du Chengyan replied casually.
Chi Mu Jiu helplessly opened her phone, her finger hovering over the dial screen, but she suddenly froze. She turned to Du Chengyan and whispered, "Um, could you tell me what the emergency number is here?"
She certainly knew the emergency number back home, but in this foreign country, she was completely clueless. She couldn't just dial 911 here, could she?
Du Chengyan looked at her bewildered yet adorable expression and couldn't help but laugh.
It was amusing to see her like this. He gently shook his head, his eyes filled with affection.
"Are you really planning to share a cell with me?" he said as he snatched the phone from Chi Mu Jiu's hand.
He had made up his mind.
With a heroic expression, someone stood resolutely. Du Heng nodded slightly, feeling a hint of weariness. Since the lady had decided to join him, he thought it best to let her savor some sweetness first.
