"Dear guests, please place your bets for this round of jade and stone."
The host's voice cut through the brief clamor, and the gamblers quickly quieted down, refocusing their attention on the upcoming game.
Ke felt a pang of dissatisfaction; in such a public setting, he understood that losing money was trivial, but losing face was a significant matter. At that moment, he directed his gaze toward Du Hengyan and the beautiful woman beside him, Chi Mu Jiu, and said with a hint of envy, "Boss Du, your companion seems to have quite the luck."
Du Hengyan raised an eyebrow, ready to blurt out the words "my wife," but Chi Mu Jiu seemed to anticipate his response. She shot him a warning glance that conveyed the message: "Don't say it. The fish is just about to bite; if we reveal too much now, it could be troublesome."
The smug expression on Du Hengyan's face instantly faded as if doused with cold water. (How unfair; I can't even tell others that my own wife is my wife.)
"What do you mean by that, Ke? Are you saying that an international drug lord like you is upset over losing a few coins?"
"Of course not! Everyone here surely has more than enough money. I just wanted to challenge Boss Du to another round."
"Another round? Wasn't that last game between my beauty and you?"
Du Hengyan's eyes narrowed slightly, his gaze turning colder, while Ke's expression darkened further.
Ke didn't grasp Du Hengyan's meaning; he was straightforward and had never been one for riddles or wordplay. Usually, no one dared to speak to him in such a convoluted manner.
Seeing this, Mo Bo Sang quickly leaned in to explain cautiously, "Mr. Ke, what Boss Du means is that you should bet against his lady. Only if you win will you have the right to challenge him."
The last part of Mo Bo Sang's explanation was almost shouted from his throat. He knew it was a potentially offensive remark and dared not speak so loudly. Just being in the presence of these two powerful figures made him feel as if he could be dragged out and executed at any moment. (Why does the King of Hell have a name jumping around on his death list today?) (And Black Wuchang glances over—hey! Sir, look at this; it's even a foreign name!)
Ke Qiang suppressed the anger boiling within him, his face dark and foreboding. He couldn't help but wonder if Du Hengyan truly thought he was afraid of him. How could he be so arrogant?
To ask him to gamble against a woman was clearly a sign that he didn't regard him at all. The more he thought about it, the angrier he became, his hands instinctively clenching into fists as his gaze bore into Du Hengyan, flames of fury flickering in his eyes, ready to erupt at any moment.
Yet, Du Hengyan remained unfazed, his expression calm as if he completely disregarded Ke's anger. At that moment, the host, observing the two titans in the center of the hall entering a verbal clash, felt a surge of anxiety.
In an attempt to ease the tension, the host quickly interjected, "There are still two minutes left for betting in this round; please make your decisions swiftly."
(At times, the host felt like a mere automaton while speaking.)
However, the gamblers seated in the hall were entirely focused on Du Hengyan and Ke Qiang, showing no intention of continuing with their bets.
"I never expected that winning just one round would ignite such a fierce competitive spirit in Mr. Ke. But how could a delicate woman like me dare to gamble against someone as formidable as you?"
The soft voice of Chi Mu Jiu floated through the air as she slightly lowered her gaze, revealing a hint of feigned timidity.
If I lose, being just a small woman with no power or influence in this underworld, I wouldn't have to worry about losing face.
Chi Mu Jiu sighed softly and continued, "But if by chance I win again, then Mr. Ke..."
Her words trailed off at that point, leaving an air of suspense. Throughout her speech, Chi Mu Jiu maintained her delicate demeanor, leaning softly against Du Hengyan.
The crowd began to whisper among themselves, various speculations filling the atmosphere.
"Winning by sheer luck once doesn't mean you can keep winning against me," Ke Qiang thought to himself.
