Lu Jin knew no anger or annoyance; instead, she had developed a different understanding of the woman before her. The changes in the city’s commercial district, especially concerning the Chi family, had recently stirred up quite a storm.
The cause was that someone had attempted to disturb her family’s grave, but she had intervened just in time. In retaliation, she had decided to play with the grave of that person’s father.
Chi Mu Jiu spoke with a sense of righteousness and confidence.
Lu Jin's expression darkened as she listened. "So you publicly scattered the ashes of Chi Qiyun's father?"
"I did not, Officer! That is slander! Slander!" Her delicate features appeared extremely innocent.
"Slander? Half the city knows about your antics, Miss Chi. Do you not realize that destroying someone’s ashes without consent from their relatives is illegal? It carries a prison sentence of one to three years for serious offenses."
Chi Mu Jiu seamlessly picked up on the latter part of Lu Jin's statement.
The young officer taking notes blinked rapidly between the two women, then lowered his head slightly to continue writing.
After a moment of silence, Lu Jin spoke again. "Since you know it’s illegal, that means you acted with intent. Your crime is even more serious."
Chi Mu Jiu felt that this officer was truly unyielding; was she really trying to pin this charge on her?
"Officer, it was just a little trick. We are all law-abiding citizens here, with good hearts, following the Party."
Lu Jin remained silent, watching her intently.
"Miss Chi really has a way of deceiving us police officers," she remarked.
Chi Mu Jiu smiled and tucked her hands into her sleeves; the interrogation room was quite cold.
"If you don’t believe me, you can take what’s in the box for examination and comparison. It only contains some charcoal ash."
"What destruction of gravestones? That is completely unfounded. Everyone present only saw me take out a box; there was no violent destruction of the cemetery."
"Officer, the charges you're mentioning are unfounded," Chi Mu Jiu continued to explain. She had merely contacted the management of the cemetery where Chi Qi Yun's father was buried to check the documentation and had purchased a similarly colored urn. This whole scene had unfolded just like that.
"Trouble shouldn't involve family." It wasn't just because of this saying; it was mainly due to legal regulations. She was determined to be a law-abiding citizen and didn't want to end up in jail because of some petty issue.
"As for whether what you said is true, we will need to conduct further investigations. If the results align with your statements, only then can you leave here, Miss Chi," Lu Jin Zhi concluded, standing up with a straight back and resolute demeanor.
Seeing Lu Jin Zhi about to leave, the young officer beside her also put away his notes and followed her out of the interrogation room.
Silence enveloped the space. The sound of polished shoes echoed as they faded away.
The dim yellow light in the interrogation room cast shadows on the cold walls and metal chairs, creating a blur of shapes. A chill hung in the air, sending a slight shiver through her.
As the light mingled with the low temperature, Chi Mu Jiu felt a wave of drowsiness wash over her. She hadn’t slept much on the flight back, and her phone had been confiscated. The interrogation room had only a small window.
She glanced back; the sky had completely darkened. She wondered if everything was going smoothly for Du Heng Yan.
Rubbing her hands together for warmth, she still felt cold. The door was tightly shut, as if no one would return.
Deciding to adjust her posture, she propped her head on her hand, closed her eyes, and began to drift into sleep. Taking a nap in an interrogation room—this was probably an experience that even Du Heng Yan hadn’t gone through.
Thinking of this, she couldn't help but laugh out loud. As drowsiness and fatigue washed over her, she gently closed her eyes and drifted off to sleep.
