At night, the dark sky remained devoid of moonlight. The gentle drizzle transformed into heavy raindrops, falling like beans.
Everything was ready. As Chi Mu Jiu opened the door, a row of brothers outside held umbrellas, forming two lines to welcome her.
"Madam."
She nodded, the wine-red hem of her expensive coat swaying gently with her high boots. The brothers felt a surge of respect; her demeanor and figure increasingly resembled that of their boss.
At the Lei residence, the booming thunder and pouring rain added an air of grandeur to the imposing mansion. Chi Mu Jiu had previously instructed the other brothers to park their cars outside, allowing only her vehicle to enter the inner courtyard. With the banquet time approaching, several cars were already parked at the entrance. Judging by the license plates, it seemed that the Su and Yang families had already arrived.
"Madam, are you sure you don’t need me to accompany you inside?" Jin Su asked anxiously from the car.
"No, even if I wanted you to come with me, those bodyguards at the door would probably stop you," Chi Mu Jiu replied, glancing at the dozen or so intimidating guards stationed at the entrance of the Lei residence. They appeared to be elite enforcers specifically chosen by the Lei family.
Jin Su could only comply with Chi Mu Jiu's wishes. He wasn't afraid of those enforcers; rather, he was concerned that if anything disrupted Madam's plans, it would be far more troublesome.
"Madam, why don’t you wait for Ye Jue? With him here, the brothers would feel more at ease."
Chi Mu Jiu looked around upon hearing this and realized she hadn't seen any vehicles from the Ye family.
"Yes, I should wait. Without Ye Jue, I might not even be able to get through this door."
As they were speaking, another car drove directly into the courtyard from outside. The license plate indicated that it belonged to a certain individual; in this gathering of business tycoons at Lei's place, this military green vehicle seemed rather out of place.
Just as she was guessing, the car had just turned off when its occupants stepped out.
"Madam, isn't that Officer Lu?"
Jin Su also looked puzzled. Why would a police officer be invited to the Lei family's banquet? Could it be related to Lei Ji's bail?
Chi Mu Jiu shook her head, but a bold guess began to form in her mind.
Before the two could discuss further, Lu Jin Zhi quickly approached the parking spot where Chi Mu Jiu was waiting, holding an umbrella.
Then, Chi Mu Jiu heard a dull knocking sound on the car window.
Lu Jin Zhi stood in front of her car. From this angle, he was too tall for her to see his expression.
Despite the privacy of the car window, which prevented anyone outside from seeing inside, and with the engine off, Lu Jin Zhi knocked twice but did not leave. Instead, he took two steps back, as if waiting for the person inside to open the door.
"Let me take a look; don't move yet."
Chi Mu Jiu knew that Lu Jin Zhi was a police officer and that his counter-surveillance skills were not something an ordinary person could match.
Jin Su nodded in understanding.
When the car door opened, Lu Jin Zhi deliberately raised his umbrella high and tilted it slightly to shield the door.
"Miss Chi."
Seeing this gesture, Chi Mu Jiu responded but did not get out of the car.
"Officer Lu, you really can be found anywhere."
"Well, it seems that Miss Chi and I are destined to meet," Lu Jin Zhi replied with a light smile.
"Officer Lu, what does your knocking on my window mean? Are you simply here to say hello?"
Chi Mu Jiu did not engage with his banter and redirected the conversation back on track.
"Since Miss Chi is already at the entrance, I thought it would be nice to invite you inside."
Chi Mu Jiu frowned slightly. Although she had met Lu Jin Zhi twice before during his working hours, today he gave her an entirely different impression.
It was as if he were familiar with her.
They both had to enter, whether first or later made no difference. However, Officer Lu, are you here to maintain public order or...?
Her beautiful eyes lifted slightly, a probing gaze fixed on him.
Lu Jin knew how to smile lightly, but he did not answer her question.
