As her body encountered the force of impact, she managed to avoid falling flat on her back, but her knee scraped against the floor, leaving a small abrasion. Her chest heaved violently, and her expression was filled with fear and anxiety.
Still shaken, she couldn't help but think about how disastrous it would have been if she had truly fallen. Would she have lost the babies? Was there now a pool of blood beneath her?
"Baby? What happened?! Did you fall?"
Perhaps it was the sound of the door being yanked open that made Du Hengyan's voice urgent and anxious.
"Baby?!"
"No, no! I just accidentally knocked something over on the counter."
She bit back the pain and slowly got up, using the door handle for support. After confirming that she had only scraped her skin and that nothing serious had happened, she finally let out a long sigh of relief.
Du Hengyan seemed to sense something was off in her tone. "Did you fall?! Are you hurt?! Did you bump into something?!"
"I'm fine, really! It's just that something fell and I couldn't reach it."
She hesitated to tell him the truth, fearing it would worry him or make him feel guilty. If only she had listened to Du Hengyan and changed into a different pair of slippers instead of insisting on wearing those cute fuzzy ones, she might not have almost lost her two little treasures.
The more she thought about it, the more terrified she became.
"Take your time. Come here so I can see."
He still sounded unconvinced.
Chi Mu Jiu could almost feel Du Hengyan's concern as if he might leap through the screen at any moment.
(What a terrifying story this is.)
She walked in front of the camera and smiled at Du Hengyan.
"See? I'm perfectly fine and lively!"
She wore a nightgown that fell just below her knees, cleverly concealing the bruises and swelling around her knees. Du Hengyan could only see her slender calves, unaware of the unusual condition of her legs. After confirming that she was fine, Du Hengyan finally relaxed.
"That's good, that's good," he repeated, more as a way to reassure himself.
"You mustn't scare yourself," he said seriously, his expression grave.
"How cheesy," she teased, though a light smile danced on her face.
Just then, another voice message notification popped up on the computer screen.
"I have to go; Xiao Xiao is calling. It must be about the work conference. Should we hang up the video call for now?"
"Okay, I'm on my way back on the flight. I'll try to get back as soon as possible."
"Alright then, talk later."
"Bye, darling. See you tonight."
"See you tonight."
After Chi Mu Jiu hung up the phone, she immediately connected to Xiao Xiao's voice request.
"Sister Jiu, I'm so nervous," Xiao Xiao's voice sounded shaky, likely because she was already out the door.
"I'm nervous too, Xiao Xiao. But it's okay; you have to believe in yourself. Even if we mess things up, it’s fine—we can always hold another conference with more time and money."
Chi Mu Jiu's tone was lighthearted, but inside she felt a mix of anxiety and anticipation.
"Sister Jiu, I'm outside your door."
"So early? I'll come down to get you now."
She spoke as she walked down the stairs.
"Alright, Sister Jiujiu, be careful and don't rush."
"I know."
This time, she had changed into the slippers that Du Hengyan had chosen for her.
