Without waiting for Du Hangyan to return, Zhi Mu Jiu had fallen asleep on the sofa, her soft hair cascading casually beside her cheeks, adding a touch of tenderness to her appearance.
The two little ones were playing with Lego on the tatami mat in the living room. The colorful blocks were skillfully assembled in their tiny hands, constructing a world filled with imagination.
Xiao Qingyan glanced outside as the sky grew darker; usually, at this time, their father would have already come home. With this thought, her hands paused in their Lego building. Du Yu tugged at his sister's small hand and asked, "Sister, it's your turn. Aren't you hungry?"
Xiao Qingyan shook her head and then nodded.
Du Yu stood up, ready to find something for his sister to eat. He knew how many snacks were in their mother's snack bag. Although their father usually didn’t allow them to touch their mother’s treats, it should be okay to take a couple of bags now, right?
"Brother, Dad is back!"
Xiao Qingyan's round eyes looked outside as the headlights of a black sedan reflected off the living room's floor-to-ceiling windows, casting a unique glow over their cozy home.
Du Hangyan got out of the car and immediately spotted his two adorable little ones waving joyfully at him, their faces beaming with innocent smiles while their little feet bounced excitedly. They kept calling out "Dad! Dad!"
Du Yu pointed to the sofa and made a sleeping gesture.
Du Hangyan understood; his precious wife was asleep. The two little ones were careful not to wake their mother, so they could only open their mouths in excitement while holding back their voices.
Du Hangyan made a gesture of understanding towards his children and then locked the car before striding toward the front door.
Before he could even input the code, the door swung open from the inside. One child clung to his left leg while the other wrapped around his right leg.
"Dad, you came home late today! Qingyan wants a hug!"
His daughter sweetly pouted, gently tugging at his shirt hem.
Du Hangyan squatted down to pick her up, but Xiao Qingyan took advantage of his bent posture to plant a quick kiss on his cheek before giggling and running away.
Ah, this little cotton-padded jacket takes after her mother; she knows how to charm so well.
Du Hangyan chuckled helplessly, yet his heart was filled with happiness. He held Du Yu's small hand as they walked into the living room, where the beauty sleeping on the sofa breathed evenly.
Chi Qingyan nestled tightly against the edge of the sofa, her small body serious as she gazed at her sleeping mother, Chi Mujiu. Her innocent eyes sparkled with love and admiration for her mom.
"Mom is so beautiful," she thought, taking in her long eyelashes, her lovely mouth, and her delicate nose. "When my brother and I were up in the sky, we chose Mom."
The last part of her thought piqued Du Hengyan's interest. Did they choose their mother because they thought she was beautiful?
"Yes, and Dad loves Mom very much," Chi Qingyan continued, her voice sweet and childlike. "Brother said that people who love each other will have a beautiful outcome, so here we are!"
As she spoke, her bright eyes glistened with unshed tears.
"Why are you crying?" Du Hengyan couldn't help but smile at her pitiful expression, feeling a pang of tenderness in his heart.
"It's because I told Brother we should choose Mom to be our mom," she sniffled softly, her voice barely above a whisper. The tears in her eyes seemed to deepen.
Du Hengyan believed every word his daughter said. He didn’t need to comfort her; Du Yu had already stepped in to wipe away her tears.
"Don't cry anymore, sister. If Mom sees your tear-streaked face, she'll be heartbroken."
Before the little pearl of a tear could fall, Du Yu gently wiped Chi Qingyan's face with his small hand.
"Oh dear brother, can you be a little gentler?" Chi Qingyan pouted, clearly dissatisfied.
"Then will you stop crying?" he asked.
"I won't cry anymore! I promise!"
