From the office to the moment they just kissed, Jing Su felt that Cheng Zi was acting a bit strange today. Compared to before, Cheng Zi was more proactive today and even talked more.
The restaurant was not far from Cheng Zi's apartment and the school where she worked, forming a triangle of convenience. The choice of this restaurant was made with its proximity in mind. After each date, Cheng Zi could quickly return to her place, which gave Jing Su a sense of relief. Cheng Zi was an independent person who disliked bothering others and rarely made any demands on him.
The car slowly pulled into the restaurant's designated parking space, and the staff outside had already respectfully opened the door. Soft lighting poured in, enveloping every corner like a light veil, creating a warm and hazy atmosphere. The exquisite crystal chandeliers showcased French romance and luxury.
On the pristine white tablecloth lay delicate tableware, with vibrant flowers in a vase that looked almost dripping with freshness. The air was filled with the gentle flow of classical music. Jing Su was surprised to discover that the piece being played was the very first score he had chosen for Cheng Zi.
"Two guests, please," the waiter said, slightly excited as if he had been waiting for a long time. They were led to a window-side table, the same spot where he and Cheng Zi had sat on their first date.
"Just serve the dishes according to the menu I reserved," Cheng Zi instructed the waiter, then took Jing Su's menu beside him.
"I've already ordered everything; today it's my treat."
"Okay." Jing Su nodded in agreement with Cheng Zi's decision.
"Let's have a drink today; I've arranged for a designated driver. This restaurant has staff for that," Cheng Zi said, gently swirling the bright red liquid in her wine glass. The liquid emitted a unique fragrance and allure.
However, Jing Su frowned slightly.
"Chengzi, I thought you didn't like to drink?" His tone was filled with concern.
She used to say that drinking could lead to mistakes, suppress the nervous system, and affect her overall performance.
"You mentioned it was just an ordinary day, but tonight is different."
"What’s so different?"
Jin Su glanced around; their table was the only one occupied in the restaurant.
"Did you book the whole place?"
His brows furrowed tighter. It seemed romantic, her taking the initiative, but this feeling made Jin Su increasingly uneasy.
"Yes, I cleared it out just for you. It cost quite a bit."
Cheng Huai didn’t meet his gaze, nor did she clink glasses with him. A glass of red wine had already slipped past her delicate jaw and into her mouth.
Jin Su wanted to ask something more, but the waiter had already rolled a cart to their table.
"Excuse me, here are your dishes."
The waiter presented a series of exquisite plates: puff pastry onion soup, pasta, French pan-seared foie gras, and dessert. Two bottles of aged red wine were also placed on the table.
"Try this; it’s quite good."
Taking the soup she had served him, Jin Su felt his unease intensifying.
After a few moments of silence, Cheng Huai finally spoke up.
"Earlier in the office, did you hear everything we discussed?"
Jin Su paused for a second with his fork in hand; it was indeed about that matter.
"I caught most of it."
He didn’t hide anything but also didn’t elaborate too much, fearing it would make her feel guilty. After all, anyone would feel hurt hearing their loved one express a desire not to marry them.
"So you heard everything?"
Cheng Hui raised her wine glass again, signaling him to clink glasses.
Hmm.
Jin Su tapped his glass against hers, but before he could take a sip of the red wine, Cheng Hui tilted her head back, the bright red liquid disappearing between her lips.
He heard the woman he had carefully guarded for seven years speak calmly in front of him.
"Asu, let’s hold hands."
