Xiao Xiu walked straight towards him, and she felt her breath quicken, fear swelling within her. At that moment, she felt like a thief caught in the act, or a stumbling block between lovers, overwhelmed by a sense of shame.
She opened her mouth, wanting to explain, but before she could speak, Xiao Xiu turned and sat beside Ning Chen. A cool, fragrant scent wafted into Ning Chen's senses; it was the unique aroma of Xiao Xiu, a blend of elegance and mystery.
Ning Chen instinctively swallowed hard, his body stiffening slightly as if startled by this sudden closeness.
"You look somewhat familiar; you must be a new colleague from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, right?"
Xiao Xiu raised her hand and gently pushed Ning Chen's coffee towards herself. The gesture seemed casual, yet in the eyes of their colleagues present, it appeared particularly intimate.
Then, with a hint of delight in her expression, she lifted the coffee cup and took a small sip. The bitterness of the coffee spread across her tongue, but at that moment, she felt an overwhelming sense of triumph.
Yes, this was how he should look at her.
"Ning Chen, this is how you should see me."
"An espresso without sugar is something few can appreciate. If you prefer something sweet, I suggest you try a cappuccino next time. The bitterness with a hint of sweetness suits you better, don’t you think, Director Shu?"
Xiao Xiu's words shot straight at Shu Wen like an arrow.
Shu Wen had also ordered an espresso; she had taken only a small sip and found it too bitter to swallow, hardly touching it again. Hearing Xiao Xiu's words and witnessing her assertive gesture made Shu Wen's face flush with embarrassment, shifting from red to pale like a color palette. She quickly stood up, lowered her head, and hurried away, leaving behind a group of stunned colleagues.
Around them, small clusters of colleagues widened their eyes in disbelief—what a spectacle! President Ning and President Xiao were so forward with each other?
It was hard to believe that the Xiao Xiu who used to speak loudly and wouldn’t even lift her head was now the highest authority in the group.
"President Xiao, your coffee is ready."
The waiter surprisingly handed the coffee she ordered to Ning Chen.
"Having drunk your coffee, I’ll trade mine for yours," Xiao Xiu said as she took another sip from her cup, which was positioned just where Ning Chen had drunk from.
Wasn’t this akin to sharing an indirect kiss?
The thought flashed through his mind, and Ning Chen's ears suddenly turned red. He hurriedly averted his gaze but couldn't help stealing glances at Xiao Xiao. He couldn't understand why he was so popular.
Xiao Xiao slightly tilted her head to look at Ning Chen. Perhaps it was the stark temperature difference between indoors and outdoors, but she seemed to feel a flush on her cheeks as well. There was a hint of jealousy in her words, like a faint thread weaving between the two of them.
Since entering the room, it had been Xiao Xiao doing all the talking; if he didn’t respond soon, he would truly seem dull-witted.
"I didn’t expect to be this popular before you sat down," Ning Chen said with a smirk, a teasing smile playing on his lips. "It seems you really enjoy Italian coffee, Miss Xiao. Next time, if I get the chance, I’ll treat you to some imported coffee that’s even smoother than today’s."
His words carried an underlying meaning as he fixed his gaze on Xiao Xiao, as if trying to see through her.
Xiao Xiao wasn’t sure if she understood the implication behind Ning Chen's words, so she simply nodded in agreement. "Well, I’m not losing out on today’s cup of coffee."
"Imported coffee sounds interesting," she added.
Their conversation was quiet, and those around them couldn’t catch much of what they were saying, only that they were discussing coffee.
The snow outside seemed to be falling even heavier today. It drifted down like a beautiful painting. The air was colder too.
Ning Chen watched as the tip of Xiao Xiao's nose turned slightly red, and a wave of concern washed over him. After finishing her cup of coffee, there was a hint of laziness in her eyes, as if she had been warmed by the cozy atmosphere.
He knew that Xiao Xiao was sensitive to the cold; when he first saw her hands reddened from the chill upon entering, his heart had already ached for her.
The office building was still a bit far away; fearing she might be cold, he decided it would be better for her to wrap up before leaving. Without waiting for her response, Ning Chen took the scarf he had draped over a nearby chair and wrapped it around her.
As his unique scent and warmth enveloped her, Xiao Xiao snapped back to reality, surprise flickering in her eyes before she regained her composure.
"Let’s go together; there’s work to do tonight. If you’re up for it, you might even catch an early shift."
Xiao Xiao looked at Ning Chen, her eyes filled with a hint of expectation.
"Of course, I'll accompany you," he replied.
The snow fell heavily, large flakes drifting down as if to bury the entire world beneath its white blanket. The two of them walked into the snowy landscape without an umbrella.
She wrapped his scarf around her neck and walked alongside him, their figures gradually fading into the distance, leaving behind a trail of deep and shallow footprints in the snow.
