Xiao Xiao raised her eyes to look out the window, where lights twinkled against a backdrop of pure white snow. Driving in a snowstorm was indeed dangerous.
“Ling Chen, let’s call it a day. The weather is likely to close the roads,” she finally called out his full name.
The assistant immediately understood the implication behind Xiao Xiao's words—this meant the entire group would be taking a holiday!
“Yes, President Xiao! We will issue an announcement right away.”
“Also, let’s move the collaborative meetings with other groups online,” Xiao Xiao instructed.
As if in response to her decision, the snow that had paused for a moment began to fall again, swirling gently in the air.
“Then we’ll head out first. President Ning, President Xiao, please drive safely,” the assistant said before gently closing the door behind them as they left.
The office fell silent once more, leaving only Xiao Xiao and Ling Chen.
Ling Chen shut down his computer and stood up to organize the documents he needed to take with him when he noticed Xiao Xiao handing him her bag.
“Your hands are cold,” she said softly, and after finishing her sentence, she closed her computer and stood up ahead of him.
Ling Chen was momentarily taken aback, a smile spreading across his face as he realized how much he enjoyed this kind of interaction with Xiao Xiao. Taking her bag from her, he instinctively reached out to hold her hand as she passed by.
On a snowy day, the roads were slick, so Ling Chen drove slowly. The car moved cautiously over the snow-covered road, the tires crunching softly beneath them. Outside the window lay a world blanketed in silver-white, with the glow of streetlights appearing hazy through the swirling snow.
Xiao Xiao sat in the passenger seat, stealing glances out at the winter wonderland beyond.
She gazed at the snowy landscape by the roadside, a wave of inexplicable emotions swelling within her.
"Ning Chen, is the snow you’ve seen abroad more beautiful than that in the city?" Xiao Xiao suddenly asked.
In the early morning, the vehicles on the road were sparse, and occasionally, one could see young couples hand in hand, treading through the snow. Their laughter rang out clearly in the quiet night, like a warm current in this cold world.
"Each has its own beauty, but I prefer the snow in the city," Ning Chen replied.
"Why?"
"It feels different."
"The winter solstice has arrived," Xiao Xiao changed the subject.
She recalled a few years ago, around this same time, when she had asked him if he wouldn’t be going home for the winter solstice. She remembered the fleeting sorrow that crossed Ning Chen's face then. From that moment on, she knew he was reluctant to discuss anything related to home.
So this time, she refrained from asking further.
"Well, what’s up? Are you planning to spend the winter solstice with me?"
"To be precise, it’s today—the winter solstice—and it’s already past midnight."
"But I can’t make dumplings. Would frozen dumplings work?" The light in Xiao Xiao's eyes was different this time—filled with surprise yet tinged with caution.
"Then we complement each other perfectly; I can make dumplings."
"Dumplings with coffee sounds interesting."
