Wen Qian looked at Lu and Lu Feng, who were sitting at the door, eagerly watching their room. She picked up the leftover chicken bones from her and Lu Chen's meal and stepped outside to lock the door.
As she walked past the two brothers, whether intentionally or not, she dropped a piece of bone. The two brothers immediately scrambled for it.
"This is mine! Give it to me!"
"No, it's mine!"
The brothers began to fight, glancing at Wen Qian as she carried the plate out. They hurriedly followed her. However, as soon as they stepped outside, they saw her dumping the contents of the plate into Da Huang's bowl.
Da Huang was the dog that Aunt Hua next door kept for guarding the house. During the day, it only ate vegetarian food and had never smelled meat before; it immediately opened its mouth wide and started devouring the bones.
Seeing this, the two brothers rushed over, eager to snatch the bones from Da Huang. Wen Qian turned and walked away, listening to the barking of the dog and the startled cries of the two brothers behind her.
They often bullied Xiao Chen during the day; this was their own doing. She wouldn’t feel soft-hearted just because they were children. In their past life, they had sold Xiao Chen without a second thought.
They were ruthless; she would be even more so.
Wen Qian watched as the two brothers ran back with tear-streaked faces, feeling a cold smile creep onto her lips. In their past life, they had sold her son; how could she possibly let them have an easy time in this life?
She would deliver a grand gift for their precious son and grandson.
In the afternoon, Wen Qian strolled around the village while leaving Lu Chen at Aunt Hua’s house to play with her grandson. Aunt Hua was kind-hearted and had always taken good care of him in their past life. Leaving Lu Chen with her put Wen Qian at ease.
While things were unstable on her side, Lu Zheng on the train was anxious and restless, sitting uneasily as people kept their distance from him, fearing he might lash out in anger.
As Wen Qian wandered through the village, she noticed a familiar face among several others, and her expression darkened instantly. This familiar person was someone she had seen in her past life—the one who had trafficked away Xiao Chen.
They didn’t dare touch other children in the village, but those who came willingly were different. It turned out they had already been lying in wait for her at this time.
The next morning, the yard was eerily quiet. When Wen Qian got up and opened the door, she saw the two brothers playing in the yard.
They looked at Wen Qian, shivering in fear, and wanted to run away. However, Wen Qian suddenly called out to them, "Do you want some candy?"
The two brothers were always foolish when it came to food; they forgot about their fear and stared at her with wide eyes, eager for a treat. "We want it! Give us some!"
Wen Qian handed each of them a piece of candy. They quickly pulled their hands back, staring in disbelief at the sweets in their palms before hastily unwrapping them and popping them into their mouths. The brothers savored the sweetness, thinking to themselves how delicious it was. "If only it were big rabbit candy," they lamented, "but it's just hard candy."
"Who wants to go with me to buy meat buns?" Wen Qian asked.
The two brothers scrambled to her side, looking at her with hopeful eyes. "I’ll go! I’ll go!"
"Then you all can come." After saying that, she locked the door of the thatched cottage and stepped outside with Lu and Lu Feng.
At this time of day, the sun was blazing high in the sky. The villagers were either working or staying indoors; there wasn't a soul on the road.
Wen Qian walked behind the two brothers, watching them bounce ahead with a smirk creeping onto her lips. Who would have thought such innocent children could be so ruthless?
She felt the presence behind her drawing closer as they entered the woods, where tall trees and weeds lined the path—perfect for hiding someone. In her past life, she had been knocked unconscious while Xiao Chen was taken away. When she woke up and rushed home for help, she unexpectedly saw Lu Yao with a human trafficker. It was then she realized they were the ones who had taken Xiao Chen. She had been puzzled as to why they insisted on taking him to such a remote place to work.
The people behind her were growing impatient; this was a corner where no one was around. As they walked deeper into the woods, Wen Qian slowly edged closer to the trees, gradually disappearing behind Lu Feng and Lu. The traffickers were momentarily stunned by this turn of events.
"Why did she go ahead? We haven't knocked her out yet," one of them muttered as they noticed Wen Qian squatting not far away. They exchanged disdainful glances at her. "How disgusting to do that out here instead of going inside; who knows if we stepped in something she left behind."
The two exchanged looks and grabbed the cloth in their hands, rushing toward Lu and Lu Feng. As they felt their captives struggle, they immediately clutched both children tightly and dashed deeper into the woods.
The brothers were confused; they had only expected one child but now there were two. Yet deep down, they felt lucky—these two looked plump and sturdy; surely they could fetch a good price.
Wen Qian was not deaf; despite their quiet movements, it was impossible for two living beings to make no noise at all. She stood up only to find that the figures of the two men had already vanished from sight.
As Wen Qian prepared to head back, she noticed a hurried sound of footsteps behind her. Turning around, she saw a man running towards her, breathing heavily.
Once she recognized the man’s face, Wen Qian froze in place, her fists clenched tightly, a crimson hue rising in her eyes as she coldly stared at him. It was Lu Zheng, the husband she hadn’t seen since their marriage.
Lu Zheng noticed the gaze directed at him and looked up to find a woman standing before him, glaring with rage. She seemed somewhat familiar, but he couldn’t place her; perhaps she was the wife of someone from the village.
He was stopped by the woman in front of him and asked with a puzzled expression, “Comrade, is there something you need?”
Wen Qian’s anger flared. How could he not even recognize her? Her eyes reddened as she raised her hand to slap Lu Zheng, but he quickly caught her wrist, frowning in confusion.
Without hesitation, Wen Qian lifted her other hand and struck his face. This time, Lu Zheng took the hit squarely; his head tilted slightly as a buzzing sensation filled his ears and his cheek began to swell rapidly.
Wen Qian had put all her strength into that slap, showing no restraint. Looking at the imprint of her hand on his face only fueled her fury further.
With a hoarse voice laced with anger, she spat out, “Lu Zheng, you don’t recognize me?”
“Y-You are Wen Qian?” His incredulous response made tears slip from the corners of her eyes as she looked at him with bitter irony.
“Yes, it’s me! Didn’t recognize me after all this time?”
Five years had passed—no, for her it felt like an eternity—and she never imagined their reunion would be like this.
“Xiao Qian, how could you…”
Wen Qian interrupted him sharply, pulling her hand free from his grasp and looking up at the tall and handsome man before her with disdain.
“Why have I become like this? It’s all thanks to your Lu family! If you had returned just a few days later, you would have found nothing but our corpses—mine and our son’s.”
Wasn’t that how it went in the past? By the time he returned, she had already been tortured to death, and their son had been beaten to death while waiting for him.
Even if he eventually avenged them, what did it matter? They were already gone; nothing he did could change that.
Inside her heart was nothing but hatred and resentment towards him.
Lu Zheng looked at Wen Qian with regret; his once proud posture slumped as he clenched his fists at his sides.
Wen Qian wiped away the tears on her cheeks and spoke to Lu Zheng: “The reason I called you back is to deal with your family. If you don’t do as I say, we’ll go file for divorce tomorrow.”
