I rushed out of the laboratory with Zhu Qi on my back, sprinting as fast as I could. The alarm sounds faded into the distance, but my heartbeat grew louder. Zhu Qi's body felt incredibly light, so light that it sent a chill down my spine.
“Xiao Dao...” Zhu Qi weakly opened his eyes. “What’s happening...?”
“Don’t talk. I’m taking you to a safe place.”
Once back home, I carefully laid Zhu Qi down on the bed. His life force was faint but stable for the moment. I tucked him in and gently closed the door behind me.
In the living room, my phone suddenly vibrated. It was a message from Tang Yuan: “Are you home? I miss you so much.”
I stared at the screen, my fingers trembling slightly. Her coming to find me at this moment was no coincidence.
“I’m here. Come over,” I replied.
Twenty minutes later, the doorbell rang. Tang Yuan stood there in a purple dress, her makeup flawless, long hair cascading down her shoulders. Her smile was still charming, but it felt particularly blinding to me.
“Xiao Dao, you don’t look so well,” she said, reaching out to touch my forehead with concern.
I pulled away from her hand. “I might just be tired.”
I glanced at my Life Energy: 65%.
Life Time: 102 days. It seemed that recent events had drained quite a bit of my Life Energy.
“I brought you some late-night snacks,” she said, shaking the bag in her hand. “Your favorite Braised Pork.”
I took the bag from her, noticing her gaze wandering around the room as if she were looking for something.
“What made you think of bringing me late-night snacks all of a sudden?”
“I missed you,” she pouted playfully. “You’ve been acting all mysterious lately. Are you hiding something from me?”
I sneered inwardly, but feigned exhaustion on the surface. "What could it be? You know my health isn't great."
"I see you've been looking quite well lately," she leaned closer to me, "but Zhu Qi seems to be looking rather sickly, doesn't he?"
My heart skipped a beat, yet my expression remained calm. "Maybe he caught a cold."
"Is that so..." She seemed to ponder this.
At that moment, I noticed a faint red light flickering from the bag she had placed on the coffee table. A listening device!
"Are you really concerned about Zhu Qi?" I asked deliberately.
"Of course! He's your best friend," she replied with a smile as she stood up. "I need to use the restroom."
I watched her walk toward the bedroom. Sure enough, she didn't head to the restroom but quietly pushed open the door to Zhu Qi's resting room.
"I caught you," I suddenly appeared behind her.
Tang Yuan spun around sharply, her gentle demeanor vanishing in an instant. "You knew all along?"
"I just found out today. I always thought you were just greedy for money," I scoffed. "Was it Li Xudong who sent you?"
"I took this job from the Dark Web, and I didn't expect it to be a task from Dean Li," her eyes sharpened. "Where is that marvelous little gadget? Hand it over, and I'll give you a hefty sum."
I suddenly grabbed her wrist. "What makes you think a little woman like you can come find me alone? Do you really think I'm that weak?"
Her face paled as she realized her miscalculation.
"You!" She tried to pull her hand back, but my grip was much stronger.
"Tell me Li Xudong's phone number."
"You won't get away with this!"
I pulled out the Life Power Bank and waved it in front of her. "Either you tell me, or..."
Her pupils dilated sharply. "158..."
After noting down the number, I released her hand. "Now, get out."
She bit her lip, a flicker of resentment flashing in her eyes. "You'll regret this!"
Once she left, I immediately dialed Li Xudong's number.
"I knew you'd call," his voice came through cold and calculating. "Have you made up your mind?"
"I'm curious about one thing," I replied. "Do you really think you can control this power?"
There was silence on the other end for a few seconds. "What do you mean?"
"You'll find out soon enough." I hung up and gazed out at the night sky.
The plan has only just begun.
