"Is all of this your masterpiece?" I forced myself to stand despite the intense pain in my chest, the Life Detector showing that my energy had dropped to 1%.
"Masterpiece?" Li Xudong laughed heartily, "These are necessary sacrifices in the pursuit of immortality. Everyone's Life Energy is so precious, and I just happen to have mastered the method to extract it."
A dozen armed security guards surged out from a hidden door, surrounding me completely. Li Xudong stood at the control panel on the second floor, looking down at me from above.
"You’re a madman!" I shouted in anger.
"Madman?" Li Xudong pressed a button, and the figures inside the Cultivation Chamber began to convulse violently. "These people were hopeless patients with terminal illnesses; I simply made better use of their lives. Just like you, Jiang Xiaodao."
"You just don’t know that I've been looking for you for many years," Li Xudong said as he slowly descended the stairs. "Now, I’ve finally found you."
At that moment, a wave of intense pain surged through my body. I collapsed to the ground as the Power Bank began to go haywire, wildly absorbing energy from the surroundings. The liquid in the Cultivation Chamber started to boil, and the alarms blared even louder.
"Interesting," Li Xudong said with a strange smile. "It seems your body can no longer withstand it. The Power Bank is trying to find a way to sustain your life."
I gritted my teeth and forced myself to stand up. The energy fluctuations from the Power Bank grew more intense, causing nearby instruments to malfunction and sparks to fly everywhere. The security guards also began to feel uneasy and started backing away.
"Die!" I shouted, triggering an explosion of the uncontrollable energy within me. A powerful shockwave knocked the guards off their feet, and equipment in the lab began to explode.
Li Xudong's expression changed drastically. "You’re insane! You’ll destroy us all!"
"That’s exactly my goal," I sneered, stepping closer to him. "Let all this evil remain buried forever."
"Wait!" Li Xudong suddenly changed his expression. "Don’t you want to know why I know so much about you?"
I paused, watching him warily.
"Because..." Li Xudong's voice softened unexpectedly, "I am your father."
The thunderous revelation left me frozen in place. Memories flooded back like a tide—those vague childhood fragments, the figure of a father who was always absent...
In that moment of distraction, Li Xudong suddenly lunged for the control panel. The alarms blared again: "Self-destruct sequence initiated, three-minute countdown."
Amid the blaring alarms, I fixed my gaze on Li Xudong. His earlier words struck me like a heavy hammer, pounding against my heart.
"Why?" My voice trembled.
"Twenty-two years ago, I used your mother as the first Experimental Subject to study Life Energy," Li Xudong said, slowly descending from the control panel. "Her Life Energy was extraordinarily powerful, but the experiment failed. Later, we created you using in vitro techniques. Unfortunately, Professor Wu and a group of others intervened and secretly took you away, causing my experiments to be interrupted. I used my own wife and son as test subjects; how selfless I was! Unlike them!"
The energy fluctuations from the Power Bank grew increasingly intense, and I felt my blood boiling. The liquid in the Cultivation Chamber churned violently, countless lives extinguishing within.
"You’re insane!" I roared as I charged at him. "You destroyed your own family for your experiments!"
Li Xudong easily dodged my attack. "Do you think I wanted this? Our family has a hereditary disease; if we don't study these things, none of us will live past fifty."
"Bullshit!" I grabbed a metal pipe from the ground and swung it at him. "You're nothing but a complete devil!"
"In three minutes, the energy will spiral out of control," Li Xudong said. "You have two choices: either accept my control and become a vessel for continuing our bloodline, or die here with everyone else."
I looked down at the Power Bank in my hand. Once, it had given me hope in despair, but now I realized the bloody truth behind it. Zhu Qi and those innocent patients—they were all victims of this mad experiment.
"I choose a third option." I suddenly laughed. "Let everything remain buried underground forever."
I abruptly set the Power Bank's energy to maximum, and a powerful surge of energy swept through the entire laboratory. The Cultivation Chamber exploded one after another, the alarms blaring sharply as I tightly gripped the copper coin Old Daoist had given me.
"You’re crazy!" Li Xudong's face turned pale. "You'll kill everyone!"
"This is my choice," I said calmly. "I'd rather end it all with death than live on as a tool for murder."
The security guards screamed in panic as they tried to escape but were struck down by the uncontrolled energy, collapsing instantly. Li Xudong frantically rushed toward the control panel, desperate to activate the emergency system.
"Son, please stop!" he shouted hoarsely.
I shook my head, feeling the last remnants of Life Energy within me. "Don't call me son!"
The Power Bank emitted a blinding light as I closed my eyes.
Amidst the deafening sound of an explosion, the laboratory began to collapse. I saw the desperate look in Li Xudong's eyes, where a glimmer of humanity finally emerged.
In the last moment before consciousness faded, I seemed to catch a glimpse of my mother's figure.
I had finally done something worthwhile with my life.
But soon, I woke up.
Zhu Qi was by my side, looking much better.
As for me, the doctor said I might be bedridden for life, but the burning of Life Energy seemed to have cured my cancer.
Zhu Qi optimistically told me that as long as I exercised with him, I would definitely be able to stand up again.
Could it really be so?
Perhaps it could.
Suddenly, I recalled the words of the Old Daoist.
"Benefactor, your fate should not end!"
