Chen Wensi turned around, his piercing gaze fixed on Liu Zimu.
Liu Zimu felt his face flush under that intense look. He awkwardly averted his eyes and snapped, “What are you staring at? I know you think I'm a nuisance! Can’t I just leave?” After saying this, he glanced at Yuan Xinruan, who had her eyes closed, and at the two hands intertwined, his lips curling downwards in a faint bitter smile.
He sighed softly, quietly closing the prison door behind him before turning to leave. Once outside the jail, he tilted his head to gaze at the moonlight above. The cold light bathed him but could not dispel the gloom in his heart.
Suddenly, memories of the night he first met Yuan Xinruan flooded back to him, leaving him momentarily dazed, his eyes reflecting a mix of longing and helplessness.
Had he truly fallen for her? Yet their world might not have room for him.
But what did that matter? He had fallen for someone, and he wanted to express his feelings.
For him, this affection was legitimate, just like the bright moonlight that, though not exclusively his, still shone serenely upon his heart.
“Has that girl finally fallen asleep?” Liu Zimu reclined on the bench of the carriage. Despite looking weary, he forced himself to stay alert, concern flickering in his eyes. He slightly lifted his head to look at Chen Wensi, waiting for a response.
“Mm!” Chen Wensi had boarded Liu Zimu’s carriage to head to Yizhuang, yet ever since stepping out of the prison, his expression had been clouded with worry and deep thought.
He sat quietly with his hands folded on his knees, leaning slightly forward as if pondering something significant, appearing somewhat distracted by everything around him.
Liu Zimu let out a soft huff, a hint of mockery in his smile. “Looking at Luo'er, it seems she even believes she really killed someone. I’m quite curious to see how you—the famed Iron-faced Constable—will handle this situation.”
His tone carried a mix of provocation and curiosity as he leaned slightly towards Chen Wensi, an unusual glint in his eyes as he awaited Chen Wensi's reaction.
"I am merely a lowly constable, and above me are Lord Yuan, the Governor, and Lord Futu. Moreover, we have Your Highness here in Jinyang County. My only responsibility is to solve cases; as for how to determine the punishment according to the law, that is beyond my consideration!" Chen Wensi raised his head slightly, looking calmly at Liu Zimu. His tone was neither servile nor overbearing, and his voice was steady and firm, as if stating a fact.
Liu Zimu suddenly raised his voice, his expression becoming somewhat agitated. "Do you know what I would do if Xinruan really committed murder?"
A hint of resolve and determination flashed in Liu Zimu's eyes as he fixed his gaze on Chen Wensi, seemingly conveying an undeniable conviction.
"Of course, Your Highness would do everything possible to ensure her safety!" Chen Wensi replied without hesitation, his eyes showing no surprise, as if he had anticipated Liu Zimu's response.
He lowered his head slightly, looking at his hands. A trace of helplessness and bitterness crossed his gaze as he understood that this case would be quite tricky.
"Naturally! I don't care about the laws of the land or what is fair. All I know is that I will spare no effort to protect her, regardless of how she feels about me!" He said this while deliberately provoking Chen Wensi, his eyes filled with challenge and defiance. "With your thick-headedness, if something were to happen to her, you would surely be burdened with worries, wouldn't you?" A slight smirk appeared at the corners of Liu Zimu's mouth, as if mocking Chen Wensi's indecision.
Chen Wensi looked into his eyes and smiled faintly, maintaining his usual calm demeanor. Yet there was a glimmer of determination and confidence in his gaze. "And so what? If Luo'er truly committed murder, she would first not forgive herself. She wouldn’t run away or let anyone rescue her. What she wants is someone willing to share everything with her!"
His voice was deep and powerful, as if declaring his understanding and trust in Yuan Xinruan while also expressing his own resolve.
Liu Zimu was momentarily speechless. He opened his mouth to retort but found himself unable to come up with a suitable argument.
After thinking for a long time, he stubbornly said, "The person willing to share everything could also be me! By the way, you better honestly explain your relationship with Qing Xi! She even knows what you like to eat..." Liu Zimu's eyes were filled with confusion and jealousy as he stared intently at Chen Wensi, seemingly searching for answers on his face.
"What’s so strange about that?" Chen Wensi replied nonchalantly, showing no signs of panic.
He lifted his head slightly to look at Liu Zimu and calmly said, "Though we have never bathed together, I know that there is a cinnabar spot on Your Highness's inner right arm that resembles a maiden's marriage mark..."
Liu Zimu nearly fell from his seat, his face instantly turning crimson with a mix of surprise and embarrassment.
"How did you know about this?" Liu Zimu stared wide-eyed at Chen Wensi, disbelief and anger filling his gaze as if his privacy had been ruthlessly exposed.
"Not only do I know, but everyone in the county office knows. The Yard Official who helped you with water while you were bathing told everyone the first time he saw it!" Chen Wensi said in a low voice, his expression devoid of mockery, as if stating a fact.
"In the marketplace, everyone loves to pry into others' privacy. Besides, my fondness for Jade Pear Scroll isn't that unusual. Luo'er goes to the Su to buy it for me every few days; if someone is paying attention, they can easily find out," Chen Wensi added with a hint of helplessness and reflection in his tone, shaking his head slightly as if lamenting the unpredictability of life.
Liu Zimu scoffed, a look of disdain crossing his face. "Then why does this nosy person only inquire about you and not others?"
His tone was tinged with jealousy as he crossed his arms and leaned against the carriage wall, dissatisfaction flickering in his eyes.
Not wanting to dwell on the topic any longer, Chen Wensi was relieved when the coachman outside let out a light call, respectfully announcing, "Gentlemen, we have arrived at Yizhuang!"
Seemingly freed from the conversation, Chen Wensi quickly stood up and exited the carriage with agile movements.
Liu Zimu followed closely behind, straightening his somewhat disheveled clothes. He took a deep breath to steady himself before stepping into Yizhuang alongside Chen Wensi.
