A flurry of hurried yet orderly footsteps surged toward Qing Xi's room, as dozens of Yard Officials swiftly poured in. In an instant, swords and blades were drawn, encircling Qing Xi in the center. The once gentle and elegant atmosphere of the room turned eerily silent due to the cold weapons and the stern expressions of the Yard Officials. Surrounded, Qing Xi remained unfazed, her eyes revealing a hint of determination.
With her lips pressed tightly together, her otherwise plain face bore a touch of haunting beauty: "I thought my plan was flawless, but it seems you had everything figured out from the start." Qing Xi scoffed softly, her bright, black gemstone-like eyes showing no fear. Instead, she met Chen Wensi's gaze and took a bold step forward, her long neck colliding heavily with the nearest blade's tip. The sharp edge instantly sliced through her skin, causing fine lines of blood to spurt forth. "If you do not let me go now, I will take my own life right here!" Her voice was firm and resolute, with a glimmer of madness in her eyes.
"You won't!" Chen Wensi's voice was taut, the atmosphere in the cramped room growing increasingly tense. He watched as blood flowed from the wound on her neck but remained motionless, his expression revealing a mix of determination and confidence, as if he had already seen through her intentions.
"Chen Wensi!" Qing Xi forced his name out slowly between clenched teeth, as if exhausting all her courage. Seeing that he remained unmoved, she finally slumped her shoulders, tears streaming down her face. "You will regret this! Everything you do to me today will haunt you later!" Her voice trembled with desperation as tears soaked her clothing.
"If that day truly comes, I will seek justice for you! But tonight, whether for your deceased maid or for Yuan Xinruan, there is no escape for you!" Liu Zimu declared, signaling to the others with a glance.
Cold iron chains quickly wrapped around her limbs, binding her tightly. The Yard Officials moved swiftly and decisively, fearing any further resistance from her.
"Take her away!" Liu Zimu commanded loudly and authoritatively. But suddenly Chen Wensi raised his hand to stop them: "Wait!"
He stepped forward, locking his gaze onto Qing Xi with a hint of hesitation and confusion in his eyes. "Haven't we known each other for a long time?" There was a trace of bewilderment and inquiry in his expression as if he were trying to recall something.
At his words, Qing Xi's body trembled slightly; joy flickered momentarily in her watery eyes before she turned away and said softly, "I wish I had never met you." Her voice carried pain and helplessness, reflecting a complex mix of emotions.
"Has the case really been solved? I really didn't kill anyone?" Yuan Xinruan asked incredulously, her eyes wide with surprise and confusion.
She had slept restlessly through the night and had only dozed off at dawn. To her astonishment, just as Chen Wensi had said, she woke up to find that the case had indeed been resolved.
"Yes, yes! The case has truly been solved; you really didn't kill anyone. The real murderer has been caught but was injured. Chen Laotou is taking her for treatment first. I came to release you before you started worrying too much in your cell!" Liu Zimu observed her expression and swallowed the truth that had almost escaped his lips. He half-lied to placate her. In his heart, he thought it best not to let her know certain things for now to spare her further anxiety.
Yuan Xinruan finally believed that she was truly fine. Overjoyed, she exclaimed and suddenly hugged Liu Zimu tightly, wrapping her arms around his neck. However, her nose tinged with a hint of bitterness as she said, “It’s all your fault! You didn’t come shopping with me, you were too busy drinking, and you acted all high and mighty like a prince…” As she spoke, she raised her small fist as if to strike Liu Zimu, but her face was beaming with happiness.
Liu Zimu had just felt a surge of joy from her unexpected intimacy when she brought up that night’s events again. He couldn’t help but grab her small fist mid-air, a hint of helplessness crossing his face. “Enough! Even if it happened again, I wouldn’t accompany you on that trip!” Liu Zimu frowned slightly, his eyes revealing a touch of grievance and reluctance.
“Why not?” Yuan Xinruan was taken aback; she had merely been complaining casually and didn’t expect him to take it so seriously. She released her grip and looked at Liu Zimu, curiosity filling her gaze.
Liu Zimu furrowed his brow as he gazed at her, his eyes filled with sorrow. “Have you ever seen a man willingly accompany the woman he loves to buy pastries for his rival?”
His expression revealed a mix of sadness and helplessness, and his voice grew somber.
“Beloved woman? Rival?” Yuan Xinruan felt light-hearted after escaping from her predicament, so she couldn’t help but lean on his shoulder with a grin. “Alright then, since you like to joke about me so much, I’ll play along.” A hint of mischief and innocence sparkled in her eyes, completely oblivious to Liu Zimu’s feelings.
Seeing her expression filled with brotherly affection made Liu Zimu roll his eyes in frustration; his irritation deepened. “Look at your expression now! I saw how you were with Chen Wensi that night!” His voice carried a hint of jealousy and dissatisfaction as he unconsciously clenched his fists.
That night, he had intentionally provoked Chen Wensi, hoping to see the usually dull man encounter some embarrassment in Yuan Xinruan’s room. However, after waiting in the shadows for a long time, he didn’t find the conflicted Chen Wensi he expected but rather a pair of lovestruck fools walking hand in hand in the courtyard. The shyness and charm on her face then were worlds apart from how she appeared now.
The turmoil in his heart was evident; yet this girl never took his confessions seriously and always refused to believe that he was sincere. Instead, he had become an invisible third party for no reason.
“You saw? What… what did you see?” Yuan Xinruan’s mind raced back to that night when they were whispering sweet nothings to each other. Her cheeks flushed crimson as she stomped her foot. “Ah! You pervert! You must have been peeking through the window! Wen Sige was clearly kissing me on the bed; how could you have seen that?” Her voice carried both shyness and anger as she instinctively covered her face with her hands.
“What!” Liu Zimu’s eyes widened in shock, disbelief etched across his face. “On… on the bed? And kissing?” His voice rose several octaves, echoing through the cell.
Yuan Xinruan felt so embarrassed that she wished for a hole to hide in as Liu Zimu's low roar reverberated throughout the prison: “On the bed? Kissing?”
She angrily lifted her foot and stomped down on his, shouting, "Go to hell!" After saying that, she covered her face and fled the cell, her footsteps hurried and frantic.
Liu Zimu let out a mournful cry as he hobbled out, hopping on one foot while exclaiming, "How can you be so pathetic? Just a few sweet words and you laughed all night like a cat that got into the cream. Turns out that guy took such advantage of you... Chen Wensi, you hypocrite! A beast in human clothing! What kind of skill is it to steal beauty and fragrance... Woe is me, someone help! My foot is injured... No, wait, my heart is hurt too!! Deduct this month's salary from Chen Wensi! Not a single coin should be given to him!"
Liu Zimu's voice was filled with anger and grievance as he hopped around like a child who had just lost their favorite toy.
