Wu Rong said with a reluctant expression, "It really is quite an interesting topic."
Rao Jie lowered her eyes and asked, "Is that so? Aren't you going to leave with her?"
Wu Rong shook his head and replied, "I already said I wouldn't go back, so how could I leave?"
Rao Jie gritted her teeth and said, "Then you could let her stay a few more days, right?"
Wu Rong was taken aback and asked, "Why? Didn't you say you didn't like her?"
Rao Jie looked down at her food and replied, "No, it's your own business. You decide for yourself."
Wu Rong gave Rao Jie a puzzled look, pressed for more answers, but when he got none, he gave up.
That night, Wu Rong stayed up late researching and didn't even sleep, so he naturally didn't come to find Rao Jie.
Rao Jie lay in bed unable to sleep, bitterly smiling; in the end, it was she who felt out of place.
The next day, Nina came in as if nothing had happened. Seeing that Wu Rong's attitude towards her hadn't changed, she knew that Rao Jie hadn't said anything.
In Nina's eyes, this was a sign of cowardice; however, since Rao Jie hadn't spoken up, she wouldn't let Wu Rong find out either.
She preferred to wait until Wu Rong realized how unworthy Rao Jie was of him—that his feelings for Rao Jie were merely a fleeting habit. After he broke up with Rao Jie, she would step into Wu Rong's world.
She had patience; she could wait.
Nina still didn't mention returning to England but focused on studying with Wu Rong instead.
Meanwhile, Rao Jie couldn't participate and could only quietly spend her time making desserts in the kitchen.
Usually, when she made desserts, she felt time slipping away, which helped her not to dwell too much on the commotion in the other room.
By evening, Wu Rong politely invited Nina to stay for one last dinner.
At the dinner table, Nina finally brought up the topic of returning home.
"Wu Rong, do you feel any different? This topic—do you feel more interested in what you can research here or elsewhere?"
Wu Rong candidly replied, "I thought you had given up."
Nina smiled and said, "I just want you to realize that you are better suited for research in a higher place. You should have better partners around you."
As she said this, Nina unconsciously glanced at Rao Jie.
Rao Jie remained silent.
Wu Rong said, "This topic is indeed interesting, and I am keen to continue researching it. However, this is not my project. I've essentially been helping you these past few days. You should be grateful and stop saying such things. I’ll say it again: I know what I’m doing. I don’t need your lectures."
"Who says it's not your project?" Nina suddenly interjected.
Wu Rong frowned slightly. "What do you mean?"
Nina's expression turned a bit sorrowful as she replied, "The truth is, the teacher's health is deteriorating rapidly. He has entrusted us with the responsibility that once you return to Cambridge to continue your position, all his projects will be handed over to you for research. Isn’t that fascinating? He prepared this specifically for you; he truly put a lot of thought into it. All he asks is for you to go back, forgive him, and continue your dedication to mathematics."
Wu Rong's expression softened a bit. The teacher knew him better than anyone else; he understood what intrigued him the most and what he excelled at. This project indeed captivated him, revealing the teacher's genuine care.
Yet, he still didn’t want to go back.
Seeing that his resolve had only wavered momentarily, Nina realized that this stubborn person was still not easily swayed.
She said, "Alright, I’ll give up on taking you away tomorrow. But I have one last request: video call the teacher and talk to him. He’s already waiting for you; don’t be so heartless as to leave him waiting in vain, okay?"
