That day, we sat facing each other.
My hand trembled slightly as I held the cup.
I forced myself to sound calm and asked him, "Are you really getting married?"
He replied with a faint "Mm," showing no hint of guilt.
I took a deep breath and tentatively asked, "Can I know who it is?"
He glanced at me before looking down at his phone again.
"You don't know her," he said.
I clenched my fists and pressed on, "Why not?"
He looked up at me, puzzled. "What do you mean, why?"
I lowered my gaze. "It's nothing."
In the silence between us, Chen Zhaonian's phone rang.
"I need to take this call," he said.
I nodded and lifted my coffee cup, taking a sip.
"Hello," Chen Zhaonian's voice came through softly.
I tightened my fists and strained to hear the voice on the other end.
It was a woman's voice, but I couldn't make out what she was saying.
All I heard was Chen Zhaonian say, "I'll be back soon."
After hanging up, he looked at me apologetically. " Yan'er, I have something urgent to attend to; I need to leave."
I forced a smile. "What could be so urgent?"
He stood up, grabbed his coat, and walked toward the door.
I stayed still, quietly watching him.
He paused at the door and turned back to me. "You should head home; I'll call you when I have time."
I watched him until he stepped out of the café.
My heart trembled slightly. Despite my rational mind telling me to keep my distance, the torrent of emotions was hard to suppress. In this complex web of feelings, I had no idea where the future would lead, but at this moment, all I hoped for was to find a path that connected our hearts. Yet, I knew all too well that nothing was that simple; the scars of the past were not easily healed.
I took a deep breath, trying to calm the turmoil within me. The next day, I returned to my place in a luxury car. My roommate asked, "So, did you win over that rich kid?" I smiled and replied, "I'm planning to move out." My roommate looked at me, shaking her head with a sigh. "You're playing hard to get!" I just smiled without saying a word.
On moving day, it started to drizzle. I had intended to take a cab and move my things myself, but just as I finished packing, I received a voice call from the rich kid. He was quick; by the time I got downstairs, he was already waiting with a moving company.
I was grateful for his help but also knew that I couldn't give him anything in return. On moving day, I wore athletic clothes with my hair tied up in a bun and no makeup on my face—completely bare-faced. Yet even in this state, I captured all of his attention. He stared at me intently as if he wanted to devour me whole.
Just as I was about to get into the car, I suddenly heard a series of urgent honks. Turning around and peering through the curtain of rain, I saw a familiar black sedan.
It was Chen Zhaonian's car.
He hurriedly got out, pushing through the curtain of rain, and without a word, yanked me out of the rich heir's car. I could see the fire in his eyes. I knew why he was angry, but I refused to give in to his wishes.
Feigning ignorance, I turned to the rich heir and smiled sweetly, "Let's go eat first." Before he could react, I had already shoved him into the car.
Just as I was about to follow him inside, someone grabbed my wrist. In the next moment, a strong force pulled me out and into a solid embrace. The familiar scent enveloped me, and I instinctively wrapped my arms around his neck.
Chen Zhaonian pushed me into his car and quickly drove away from the neighborhood. I clutched the seatbelt tightly, feeling a wave of nausea wash over me. He glanced at me and slowed down. Reaching out, he tried to take my hand, but I shook him off forcefully.
