Evan never imagined that this seemingly ordinary afternoon would change his life forever. The weather forecast warned of an impending storm, yet when Evan looked up at the sky, he found it wasn’t as gloomy as predicted. Instead, the sky seemed to be enveloped in a strange glow, with sunlight filtering through the treetops and dappling the ground below. Evan loved this forest, especially the hidden paths behind it that were seldom trodden. Every time he walked there, he felt an inexplicable thrill, as if stepping into a world unknown.
Today, he planned to explore once more. Although his mother always advised him not to wander too far before a storm, Evan never took her words to heart. He stood at the doorstep, slung his backpack over his shoulder, quickly said goodbye to his mother, and plunged into the damp woodland path.
The wind rustled through the treetops, carrying a hint of chill. Evan carefully stepped on the moist ground beneath him; everything around was eerily quiet. The leaves whispered in the breeze, occasionally interrupted by the calls of small birds. The air was thick with the scent of earth and resin, heightening Evan's excitement. No one knew the secrets of these paths; he felt a special kinship with this tranquil forest.
After walking for about ten minutes, Evan suddenly stopped in his tracks. His gaze fell upon a hidden corner ahead. It was an entrance almost completely obscured by vines and bushes, seemingly forgotten by time. He rubbed his eyes to confirm he wasn’t mistaken.
“What is that?” Evan murmured softly, a strong curiosity rising within him. He had to see it.
Gently pushing aside the dense vines and bushes, he crouched down and carefully squeezed through the entrance. The opening was small but just wide enough for him to bend down and enter. His heart raced as countless thoughts and speculations flooded his mind; yet he didn’t hesitate but pressed on into the darkness.
As soon as he stepped inside, a cold breath of air hit him, sending a shiver down his spine amidst the surrounding darkness. He reached out to touch the cave wall; it felt as cold as ice. The air inside was heavy, as if something lay sleeping within. Not daring to be careless, Evan raised his flashlight and swept its beam around the dim cave.
It was quiet inside; the only sound was his own breathing. The deeper he ventured, the more humid the air became, even allowing him to hear droplets falling from above. Cautiously moving forward, he suddenly caught a glimmer of light ahead—not from the entrance but from some unknown source.
“Could there be something ahead?” A thrill surged through him as his heartbeat quickened. With little time for hesitation, he decided to press on.
A few steps later, the end of the cave widened unexpectedly. Evan’s sharp gaze scanned his surroundings; long stalactites hung from the ceiling while thick layers of damp earth covered the ground below. Just as he prepared to delve deeper into exploration, a low growl echoed through the cave.
Evan whipped around, eyes wide—there stood a dog at the entrance.
This was a dog unlike any he had ever seen. Its fur was sleek and black, its eyes shimmering with an unusual light that seemed capable of seeing through everything. It stood quietly at the cave’s mouth, staring intently at Evan as if waiting for something.
"Who are you?" Aiven asked, furrowing his brow in a tentative manner. The dog did not respond, continuing to gaze at him with its sharp eyes.
