The faint light of dawn seeped through the gaps in the tightly drawn curtains. Qin Changqing rubbed his heavy head and gestured to himself that he was fine. Once fully awake, he sensed something unusual.
"Hey? Why are you here so early?"
"I'm diligent! Coming early means I can learn more... Ouch! Ouch! Don't you know you can't just pull a girl's hair?!"
"Then just tell the truth!" Qin Changqing pretended to glare at her fiercely.
"Because there's no one at home." Xiao Yun said, her brow furrowed as she hung her head. "My brother had an urgent matter and left for a flight early this morning. I... I've watched too many horror movies, and being alone in an empty house is really creepy..."
Qin Changqing pondered for a moment. "Did something happen with his business?"
"You haven't had breakfast yet, right? I'll go buy you some! Hehe." Xiao Yun suddenly blurted out and dashed out of the hospital room.
Even though she moved quickly, Qin Changqing caught the fleeting look of sadness on her face and the tears that were welling up in her eyes, threatening to spill over.
Had things gotten so serious on Xiao Yan's side?
After a long silence, Qin Changqing took out his phone and searched for a number in his contacts. His finger hovered over the call button, hesitating for a long time before finally dropping limply to his side.
Suddenly, the door to the hospital room was pushed open. Qin Changqing thought it was Xiao Yun returning, but when he looked up, he froze—standing at the doorway were several burly men in black suits with stern expressions.
One of them stepped forward, slightly bowing towards the young man on the bed whose face had already changed dramatically. His tone was respectful yet firm: "Master Changqing."
He continued, "The boss sent us to pick you up."
No... He ultimately couldn't do it.
Just as Xiao Yun returned to the hospital with a bowl of congee, two nurses on duty rushed over to her like they had found a lifeline, their voices trembling.
"Miss Xiao!" They had tears brimming in their eyes, nearly crying out. "You need to hurry to Mr. Qin's room! It seems like there's about to be a fight!"
Xiao Yun quickly understood why the nurses were so panicked.
As she climbed the stairs and saw the row of black-clad men standing guard at the door like bodyguards, she couldn't help but gasp in shock.
There was a furious shout coming from the hospital room, sounding like the voice of Qin Changqing.
"I would rather die here than let him take care of me!"
"But..."
"I don't need his fake concern. Where was he when my mother was on the brink of death?! I have nothing to say to you all. Get out of here right now!"
The leading man in black pondered for a moment, as if making a decision, and slightly bowed. "Then, we apologize for our intrusion." He then waved his hand at the people behind him. "Take Master Changqing away."
Qin Changqing's legs were still in plaster and wrapped in bandages. He wanted to evade them but found himself powerless. Just as those people were about to approach, a petite figure suddenly dashed in front of Qin Changqing, spreading her arms to block their path. It was Xiao Yun.
"You..." Xiao Yun initially intended to say, "What are you going to do to my friend?" but her nerves got the better of her, and her words came out as, "What are you going to do to my boyfriend?!"
The group froze in surprise, and Qin Changqing widened his eyes. However, he quickly regained his composure, an involuntary smile appearing on his face. He suddenly reached out and pulled Xiao Yun close, affectionately wrapping his arm around her shoulder.
"That's right," Qin Changqing said indulgently as he ruffled the girl's hair, casting a cold and provocative glance at the others. "You can go back and tell that old man that I want to stay by my girlfriend's side and won't be going anywhere."
They were very close together; Xiao Yun could feel his breath against her neck, causing her heart to race. The unfamiliar thrill made her want to escape, yet she had to keep up the act.
"Just... just like that," Xiao Yun said stiffly, nodding her head while mimicking Qin Changqing's defiant posture.
The leading man stared at the two for a moment before suddenly addressing Xiao Yun. "Excuse me, are you Miss Xiao Yun?"
Xiao Yun was taken aback that he knew her name and felt a bit surprised. "Yes... what about it?"
The man smiled suddenly, and an ominous feeling washed over Xiao Yun.
"Your brother is negotiating a business deal with our company. If it goes through, it could resolve his current predicament; but if it doesn't..." He deliberately left his sentence unfinished, watching Xiao Yun's pale face with a slight smile. "If you can help us persuade Master Changqing to come with us, we will definitely assist your family's business."
The room fell into an eerie silence. Qin Changqing knew this condition was highly tempting for Xiao Yun. Those people were truly despicable; did they want to see him and Xiao Yun turn against each other?
But even so... he...
"I refuse."
The woman's firm voice shattered the silence in the room. She glared at the people around her, her body trembling slightly with anger. "We will handle our family's affairs ourselves. Isn't it absurd to involve outsiders?! Even if we really go bankrupt, my brother and I will accept it. Besides..."
She glanced back at Qin Changqing, who stood there in shock. "Changqing seems to really dislike you all. If he ends up in the hospital, it's my fault, and I will take full responsibility. I won't let you take him away like this!"
Outside the hospital room, there was a slight commotion; it seemed that the nurse had called security. The leading man in black didn't want to escalate the situation further, so he had no choice but to back down. He shot a fierce glare at Xiao Yun and waved his hand to his subordinates, saying, "Let's go."
As soon as the group disappeared from the doorway, Xiao Yun's legs gave way, and she collapsed onto the floor.
"Xiao Yun?!"
"I'm fine..." Xiao Yun waved her hand to reassure the person in the hospital bed but kept her shoulders slumped, not lifting her head for a long time.
Just as Qin Changqing began to feel uneasy, she suddenly sprang up, hands on her hips, full of energy as she declared, "Alright! Full of vitality! We need to work hard today to prepare for the Blind Date Tea Party! Oh no, the porridge has gone cold; let me heat it up for you..."
Qin Changqing watched her bustling figure, so reminiscent of her usual self, and suddenly felt an overwhelming urge to give her a hug.
He understood in his heart just how much determination this girl had mustered to refuse those people's demands. Though she appeared innocent and somewhat scatterbrained on the surface, perhaps she was stronger and braver than he had imagined.
And when would he be able to find that kind of courage again to face the past he was unwilling to revisit?
