“Welcome, ladies, to the Bai Guan Club of the Xiang Family,” the host on the elevated platform said respectfully, bowing deeply. “The tea party will now begin; please take your seats.”
In the center of the venue, several long tables were covered with snow-white tablecloths. As the guests settled in, the lights in the hall suddenly went out. Xiao Yun was startled as well, but she did not panic or scream like many others.
A few seconds later, the candelabras on the tables were lit, their flickering yellow flames casting eerie shadows on everyone’s faces. However, nothing could compare to the shock of the host's next words.
“Ladies who screamed just now, please leave the venue.”
Xiao Yun then realized that behind each chair stood a tall and imposing servant who unceremoniously escorted those who had screamed out of the hall.
After a brief moment of chaos, the venue fell into a deathly silence with more than half of the guests gone.
Is this… a matchmaking event?! Surely it’s not a talent show?! They’re actually implementing an elimination system? Thinking of the horror film training arranged by Qin Changqing, Xiao Yun swallowed hard.
Sure enough, the black tea was concocted to resemble thick blood; candies were decorated to look like terrifying eyeballs; and a chilling breeze occasionally swept through, making her feel as if icy hands were tugging at her feet…
Whenever someone displayed signs of fear or distress, they were mercilessly escorted out by the attendants.
As time slowly passed, Xiao Yun gradually understood—this was not a test of courage nor an assessment of their ability to command attention; what Xiang Xiaotian truly wanted to see was their endurance.
If one wished to marry into a wealthy family, they must endure everything—no matter how wronged, indignant, or terrified they felt, they had to maintain a smile and exhibit grace. It was all about enduring, enduring, enduring.
When Qin Changqing received Xiao Yun's call again, he was not surprised. At that moment, he was opening the door to his hospital room, preparing to handle his discharge procedures.
“Is it over?”
“No.” Xiao Yun’s voice sounded muffled. “I just made an excuse to go to the restroom; I stepped out for some fresh air.”
“Are you regretting it?”
There was a moment of silence on the other end of the phone, and then a voice, tinged with a hint of sobbing, replied, “I really feel useless.” Tears were welling up in Xiao Yun's eyes. “But I’m just so angry. For three whole hours, he didn’t show up, yet he kept scaring us with all sorts of things. What gives him the right to toy with us? Just because he has money and power?”
In truth, she shouldn’t have any complaints; after all, her initial purpose for being here wasn’t entirely pure either. Yet some things are difficult to accept emotionally, even if reason tries to convince her otherwise.
“You don’t have to endure this,” Qin Changqing sighed softly. “Don’t forget what you said—you won’t force yourself.”
“But…”
“Don’t worry about your brother’s situation. Trust me, his company will turn around.” Sensing her hesitation, Qin Changqing suddenly intensified his tone. “Just withdraw from this. I’ll come to pick you up at the Bai Pavilion.”
He paused, his magnetic voice carrying an undeniable determination that instantly dispelled the last trace of doubt in her heart. “Don’t worry; with me by your side, everything will be alright.”
The host of the tea party never expected that someone would insist on leaving after over three hours. Suddenly, a hand was raised, and a voice said, “I request to withdraw.”
If it had been anyone else, he would have scoffed at the idea of trying to keep them there. However, someone had previously advised him to pay special attention to the young woman in the purple princess dress. So the host smiled slightly and politely asked, “May I ask why you wish to withdraw, Miss?”
“Dating is a two-way choice. I’m already disappointed in Mr. Xiang Xiaotian, so I’m withdrawing.” In short, before Xiang Xiaotian could make his choice, Xiao Yun had already eliminated him.
“You haven’t even seen my face yet, and you want to leave early?”
Suddenly, all the crystal chandeliers in the venue lit up at once. The sudden brightness blinded Xiao Yun momentarily; she could only vaguely see someone slowly descending the staircase covered in red carpet and walking straight toward her.
“Nice to meet you, Miss Xiao Yun.” Xiang Xiaotian appeared in a sharp black suit, looking handsome and dashing as if a deity had descended.
He walked forward gracefully, taking the woman's hand and placing a gentle kiss on her knuckles. A fleeting spark glimmered in his elongated phoenix eyes.
"I hope you can forgive my previous neglect, for tonight's star is none other than you." Xiang Xiaotian's lips curled into a confident smile as he took Xiao Yun's hand and turned to face the crowd, solemnly announcing, "Miss Xiao Yun is the fiancée I have chosen for tonight. I hope everyone will bless us."
Xiao Yun was taken aback and quickly waved her hands. "No, I..."
Xiang Xiaotian suddenly leaned down and whispered a few words in her ear. Xiao Yun's eyes widened in shock, her lips trembled slightly, but she ultimately fell silent.
When Qin Changqing arrived at the entrance of Bai Guan Club, this was the scene he encountered.
The young ladies who had been asked to leave were reluctant to go and lingered at the door. Suddenly, the silver doors of the club swung open, drawing everyone's attention. There stood Xiang Xiaotian, smiling as he walked out with Xiao Yun by his side.
In contrast to the woman's silence, Xiang Xiaotian appeared calm and at ease. His gaze casually swept across the crowd until it landed on Qin Changqing, who was standing in the shadows of the trees in the distance.
— You’re late.
Xiang Xiaotian smiled provocatively, mouthing silently to him.
— Brother.
