Zheng Mengni held her breath. "So you went through all this trouble to expose me, just to prove that I’m not worthy of you?"
Wei Jingxi couldn't help but laugh, though anger simmered beneath his smile. "After all this talking, you should think of a way to make me stay quiet forever. What does it matter why I’m upset?"
"Then will you promise not to tell Mom and Dad?" she asked.
Her gaze drifted, and a faint smile curved her full, luscious lips, but there was a bitter edge to it.
Wei Jingxi focused on her lips, his dark eyes clouded with uncertainty. "If you want something from me, you need to show some sincerity. Don’t forget, you’re no longer the little princess of Sheng An Group; you’re just an intruder."
He didn’t continue because he saw tears welling up in Zheng Mengni's eyes.
"Come here," he said, his tone softening.
Zheng Mengni didn’t hesitate any longer and walked towards him. She was terrified.
Before Wei Jingxi told her the truth, she had no idea she wasn’t really her parents' child. The lies she lived were simply because she craved the feeling of being recognized and cared for.
Zheng Mengni wasn’t lacking in effort; in fact, she studied two hours more than her peers every day.
She had practiced singing, but her natural inability to carry a tune made progress incredibly difficult.
She had also tried her hand at painting, yet no matter how hard she worked or how many pieces she created, none received approval from her teacher.
Her diligence couldn’t compensate for her clumsiness. She just wanted to be as excellent as everyone else so that her family would love her more, which led her to make the foolish choice of cheating.
Zheng Mengni didn’t understand why Wei Jingxi had discovered all of this; she had never offended him, this fiancé with whom she maintained a respectful distance.
She was truly scared.
She loved this family and everyone in it—her dad, mom, brother, and even her pets, Juan Juan and Mi Gao.
She had invested so much effort just to gain their attention.
She couldn’t bear to lose them.
Zheng Mengni had already stopped in front of Wei Jingxi, her hazy gaze regaining clarity. She lowered her head to look at him, as it seemed to be the first time she was this close to her fiancé.
His skin was pale and cold, with a striking bone structure. His delicate and handsome features were hidden behind the lenses of his glasses, and his narrow eyes always carried an air of unwarranted disdain.
Wei Jingxi chuckled softly and leisurely uttered a single word: "Sit."
The only single sofa had been claimed by him, his lean and muscular thighs spread wide, leaving no space for Zheng Mengni. She turned slightly and sat on his lap, smoothing out her skirt while her slender thighs pressed together and tilted to the side.
She extended her fair arm and wrapped it around Wei Jingxi's neck, their distance growing ever closer. Gazing at his face just inches away, Zheng Mengni spoke softly, "As we are engaged, could you help me keep these Secrets?"
Wei Jingxi remained reclined on the sofa, his gaze wandering over Zheng Mengni's porcelain-like, tender skin. He lifted his arm to embrace her waist, which was delicate enough to fit in one hand, and she naturally melted into his embrace.
Wei Jingxi lowered his head, his cool breath brushing against her ear.
"Kiss me."
Those two simple words left Zheng Mengni momentarily speechless. Wei Jingxi held her waist with one hand while checking his watch with the other.
"The gathering ends in ten minutes; you don’t have much time left."
Zheng Mengni grasped Wei Jingxi's collar and tilted her head up to press against him. As she closed her eyes, she thought about whether biting off Wei Jingxi's tongue would make him obediently quiet.
Wei Jingxi did not move; instead, he removed his glasses with empty hands. He didn't need them anyway—he wasn't nearsighted; he had simply worn them to play the part of a diligent student because he had heard that Zheng Mengni admired high-achieving scholars.
Now, they were unnecessary.
His goal had finally been achieved.
Zheng Mengni cautiously kissed him, the sweet fragrance lingering between their lips.
Wei Jingxi's heart raced as he stared past Zheng Mengni at the closed door. From the moment he received the report, it was clear he would have to keep secrets from everyone outside that door forever.
Zheng Mengni was his fiancée, but it was only because she relied on the status and power of Sheng An Group. If she were to lose her identity, she would no longer be his fiancée.
