Zheng Mengni's heart raced as the air conditioning in the car hummed softly, yet the skin beneath her clothes, kissed by Wei Jingxi, still felt scorching hot. She lowered her gaze gently, her long, curled lashes concealing the unease in her eyes.
"Xiao Ni, what did you talk about with that Wei kid tonight? You two have been holed up in the room for quite a while," Zheng Zeqi remarked, leaning back in his chair.
Zheng Mengni straightened her back, instinctively gripping the hem of her skirt as she turned to face him. Zheng Zeqi was reclining against the chair, his left hand propping up his head while his thumb pressed against his temple. The dazzling lights from the rows of skyscrapers illuminated his face, and despite their shared surname, there was no resemblance between them.
His facial features were sharply defined; he had a slender, prominent nose and thin yet well-shaped lips. Each feature was flawless, but it was his eyes that captivated—simple and clear black pupils set against a perfectly proportioned brow that conveyed neither excessive warmth nor cold indifference.
Noticing her gaze, Zheng Zeqi turned his head towards her. Zheng Mengni felt a pang of guilt and quickly lowered her eyes, fearing he might catch on to something amiss.
"What's wrong?" he asked.
Zheng Mengni lied, "He just needed my help with something. There's a test coming up at school, and he wanted me to tutor him."
Zheng Zeqi's voice was cool and his dark eyes seemed unfathomable. "Tutoring? As far as I know, he can hardly be bothered to attend classes. Is he using tutoring as an excuse to get you to do his homework for him?"
"N-no," she stammered.
"You may be engaged, but don’t be foolishly giving everything to him. You need to learn to ask for something in return. Besides, that Wei Jingxi is naturally a carefree troublemaker. If you don't rein him in now, it will only be harder to manage after you're married."
Zheng Mengni pondered this thoughtfully.
Zheng Zeqi continued, "A marriage alliance is merely a formality; don't invest your heart in someone unworthy."
"I understand."
"In our circle, it's common for couples to lead separate lives after marriage. As long as you behave yourself, your brother will ensure you have the best toys to play with."
To be fair, Zheng Zeqi did not like this brother-in-law at all. Having graduated recently, he had heard enough about school affairs. Wei Jingxi attended school no more than three times a week; his name was always on the list of absentees for morning and evening study sessions and he either ranked at the bottom or missed various exams altogether.
A good-for-nothing who squandered his time without any skills—Zheng Zeqi couldn't fathom what their parents were thinking by allowing his sister to become engaged to such a waste of space.
Zheng Zeqi swallowed hard, his expression darkening.
Recently, the development of the Wei Family Wanxie Consortium has been soaring, with its Yu Heng International National Financial Center expanding at an astonishing pace, seemingly on the verge of overshadowing the Zheng Family.
Currently, a marriage alliance seems to be the best option for mutual benefit between the two families, but it would mean forcing Xiao Ni to spend her life with someone she does not love.
Zheng Zeqi remained silent for a long time, the gloom in his eyes dissipating. He spoke softly, "You need to focus on your exams; don't worry about Wei Jingxi. Just study well, and if you do well, let me know what reward you want."
"Thank you, Brother."
Zheng Mengni felt her nerves tighten, her heart sinking. If Zheng Zeqi knew that she wasn't really his sister and that she had cheated on her exams, how would he view her? Would he laugh at her? A fool who struggled with everything until suddenly becoming smart after entering university.
She should have felt comforted by this revelation, but instead, it only made her feel that it was expected. Being foolish meant she could only rely on cheating to achieve those meager results.
Zheng Mengni was on the verge of a breakdown. She didn't want her parents or brother to hate her. The attention and recognition she had finally gained were hard-won.
Upon returning home, the maid had already prepared a milk bath in advance. The milky bathwater steamed gently, delicate rose petals quietly floating on the surface.
Zheng Mengni sat alone in the tub; today, no one came to do her hair treatment. She lowered her head as the high peaks of snow rose above the water's surface, revealing speckled marks here and there. It still hurt a little; Wei Jingxi had been forceful when he kissed her.
Plop, plop. Tears slid down her snowy cheeks into the bathwater, disappearing in an instant. Suddenly, a clear and melodious ringtone echoed through the room as Zheng Mengni reached for her phone.
It was a video call.
She glanced down at the caller ID and hung up without a second thought.
Opening the chat window, she typed: "I’m washing..."
Before she could finish, the phone rang again, still a video call.
She hung up once more.
The phone seemed to be possessed, ringing incessantly without giving Zheng Mengni a moment to type.
She continued to hang up, then took the initiative to dial a voice call instead.
