This time, it was the other party who hung up first.
Soon after, a voice message from Wei Jingxi came through. She read the text. Zheng Mengni did not want to hear his voice.
"Being my fiancée honestly is your only chance to stay in the Zheng Family. I advise you to think carefully about whether to hang up on the next call."
After reading it, a video call followed.
Zheng Mengni shrank down, only her head visible above the water's surface. She raised her phone and answered Wei Jingxi's video call.
On the screen, Wei Jingxi was sitting at his desk with his legs crossed, propped up by a phone stand, his hands resting behind his head against the chair.
From Wei Jingxi's perspective, he could only see Zheng Mengni's pale forehead and her eyes, which were red from crying.
Wei Jingxi lowered his legs and leaned forward, getting closer to the screen. "Hold the phone further away; I can't see your face."
Zheng Mengni held her phone carefully, slowly moving it back so her face gradually came into view on the screen.
"What do you want?"
"What are you doing?"
They both spoke at the same time, but Zheng Mengni's voice was too soft and got drowned out.
Wei Jingxi remained silent, his dark eyes fixed on her, with an unmistakable hint of displeasure in his brows and corners of his eyes.
Meeting that gaze made Zheng Mengni's heart race. She spoke softly, "I’m taking a shower."
The phone shifted downward.
"Don't go too far, Wei Jingxi."
"You don’t need me to remind you; given our relationship, we could do even worse things."
His face showed little emotion, and Zheng Mengni's expression turned cold in response.
"Are you trying to gather more leverage against me? Screenshots, recordings... is that your plan?"
"You're being too passive."
Zheng Mengni detested the feeling of being controlled by others. She couldn't continue living according to Wei Jingxi's whims.
Hearing this, Wei Jingxi scoffed, "You really have a severe case of paranoia. If I were as terrible as you think, would you still be able to enjoy your baths at the Zheng Family's estate?"
"What do you want me to do to make you satisfied?" Zheng Mengni hesitated, realizing that before she could set off this ticking time bomb named Wei Jingxi, she needed a solid plan.
The blood flowing through her veins was an unchangeable fact. All along, her mother had indeed loved her unconditionally, and her brother had indulged her without question. Zheng Mengni believed that after so many years of being together, there was a bond between them.
But then there was her father. He was a strict man. Only when she achieved good grades would he show her a tolerant smile. If her true lineage were exposed, if her academic dishonesty were revealed, he would certainly no longer see her as family.
She couldn't afford to slack off or cheat anymore; she needed to muster the energy to achieve real results. Before her identity was uncovered, she hoped to gain her father's genuine approval. Perhaps when the truth came out, he would remember their past affection and not cast her aside like he might have otherwise.
Before that happened, she needed to keep Wei Jingxi in check and prevent him from exposing the secret too soon.
"You can act all nonchalant during our video calls, Zheng Mengni. You must think very little of me to behave this way," Wei Jingxi said coldly, his voice laced with displeasure as he stared at her, his expression so indifferent it seemed it could vanish at any moment.
Zheng Mengni spoke softly, "It's not like that. I'm just really scared. I've never gone through anything this complicated before. Ever since I got back from the car ride last night, my mind has been a mess."
She bit her lip, her voice trembling with a hint of vulnerability. This was how she always acted when she made mistakes—using her looks to convey innocent emotions to their fullest extent.
Wei Jingxi wasn't blind to her act. She dared to cheat on exams, hire someone to paint for exhibitions, and even enlist a substitute singer for songs posted online. A person like her couldn't possibly be timid in any significant way.
However, Zheng Mengni's display of weakness seemed effective against him.
Wei Jingxi spoke slowly, "What are you afraid of? If I say I'll help you, I will help you. If I can stay at the Zheng Family estate, I'll assist you with anything you need in the future. I won't forget this favor."
Zheng Mengni's voice was soft and sweet, making it hard for anyone to suspect her of lying.
"Alright." Wei Jingxi paused for a moment before stating his first request. "I hope you can fulfill your duties as my fiancée. We need to have a video call for at least half an hour every day."
"But we're in the same school; we can meet in person."
"I don't want to go to school."
"Fine."
"Not going is just as well."
