“Xiaoli, your aunt is here. She wants you to help Zixuan with his studies,” my mother said from the doorway, a hint of helplessness on her face.
I was curled up on the sofa, engrossed in a comic book. At her words, the book slipped from my hands and fell to the floor with a thud. “Not again! Why can’t he just study on his own? Why does he always have to bother me?”
“Oh come on, Xiaoli, just help your aunt out! You know how Zixuan is—he’s not very self-motivated when it comes to studying. I’m at my wit's end here,” my aunt’s voice called from the entrance.
Sighing, I resigned myself and set the comic aside. “Fine, fine, Auntie. But let me make it clear—I can only do my best. If Lu Zixuan doesn’t cooperate, there’s nothing I can do.”
“Thank you so much, Xiaoli! You’re such a good kid!” My aunt beamed at me, taking my hand and showering me with affectionate pats and kisses that left me feeling a bit overwhelmed.
Ugh, she always gets me with that! I can never refuse her.
The tutoring session was set to take place at my house. I pulled out the textbooks and workbooks, sitting at my desk as I waited for Lu Zixuan to arrive. Would he actually behave this time?
“Knock knock knock!” The sound of knocking echoed through the room as Lu Zixuan pushed the door open, a can of soda in hand.
“Hey there, little teacher! Nice to see you again!” He greeted me with a grin, completely lacking any semblance of seriousness about studying.
I shot him an exasperated look. “Cut the chatter and get over here to study!”
Lu Zixuan plopped down across from me, opened his textbook, and pretended to read. But before long, his gaze began to wander—first out the window at some birds, then fiddling with the pen in his hand—anything but looking at the textbook.
“Lu Zixuan! Can you please take this seriously?” I couldn't help but remind him.
“I am serious!” He looked at me with an innocent expression. “Just look!”
Following his gaze, I saw that he was indeed looking at the textbook, but his eyes were unfocused, clearly indicating that he wasn't paying attention at all.
“You're not studying at all like this!” I said angrily. “Do you even want to improve your grades?”
He sighed, resting his head on the desk, and gloomily replied, “Xiaoli, studying is really hard! I just can't get it! It's way more interesting to chat with you.”
Seeing his dejected expression made me feel a mix of helplessness and amusement. I knew Lu Zixuan wasn't stupid; he just didn't put in the effort and was always thinking about having fun.
“Lu Zixuan,” I softened my tone, “studying is indeed tough, but as long as you're willing to work hard, you'll definitely make progress. Just think about it—if you can get good grades, how happy your mom would be! I would be happy too.”
He lifted his head and looked at me, a glimmer of hope in his eyes. “Really? You'd be happy if I did well?”
“Of course!” I nodded firmly. “And if you study well, you can do whatever you want in the future without being looked down upon by others.”
It seemed my words touched him; he straightened up and picked up his pen, seriously starting to work on the problems.
Seeing him finally focus on his studies made me breathe a sigh of relief. Watching him concentrate, I suddenly thought he was actually quite adorable.
Perhaps my “forced” tutoring career wasn't so bad after all.
