On a crisp autumn day, the school organized an outing. To be honest, I wasn't particularly interested in hiking, but the thought of going with Lu Zixuan filled me with a small sense of anticipation.
"Xiaoli, look at this flower! Doesn't it resemble you? Small and cute!"
I shot him a glare. "How does it resemble me? This flower is yellow, and I'm white!"
"Oh come on, I meant its shape! Look how delicate and petite it is, just like you!" He reached out and gently touched the petals.
"Not at all! I'm way cuter than that!"
All along the way, Lu Zixuan was like a cheerful little bird, chattering away. One moment he was telling me jokes, and the next he was pointing out wildflowers by the roadside and asking me their names. Although his jokes were quite corny and I recognized very few of the flowers, being with him made my mood inexplicably light and joyful.
As we climbed halfway up the mountain, I accidentally stepped on a loose stone. My foot slipped, and I lost my balance. "Ah!" I exclaimed, realizing I was about to fall.
In that critical moment, a warm hand grasped my arm and pulled me back. I looked up in a daze to see Lu Zixuan gazing at me with concern. "Xiaoli, are you okay? Did you hurt yourself?"
I shook my head. "I'm fine, thank you." My heart raced not only from the scare but also from the warmth of his hand and the worry reflected in his eyes.
"What a fool! Can't you watch where you're walking?" Although he scolded me, his tone was gentle as he lightly patted my head.
Feeling a bit awkward, I dodged his hand. "It's your fault for distracting me with all your chatter!"
He chuckled, "Alright, alright, it's my fault! Next time I'll be quieter, I promise not to disturb our Xiaoli while she's focused on walking!"
We continued to climb higher, the mountain path growing steeper, and my stamina began to wane. "Lu Zixuan, I... I can't go on..." I panted.
"Come on, I'll carry you," he said, turning around and crouching down.
I hesitated for a moment. "Isn't that... not very good?"
"Oh come on, Xiaoli, when did you become so shy? Hurry up! If we don't move soon, it'll be dark!"
I bit my lip but eventually climbed onto his back. He carried me step by step up the mountain, and I could feel his strong heartbeat and the warmth radiating from him.
"Lu Zixuan..."
"Yes?"
"Am I... heavy?"
"Of course not! Our Xiaoli is so light, like a feather!"
I smiled softly and rested my head on his shoulder. The mountain breeze blew past us, bringing a hint of coolness, but my heart felt warm.
By the time we reached the summit, it was already evening. We sat on the rocks at the top of the mountain, gazing at the beautiful scenery in the distance. The sun was setting, painting the sky in brilliant shades of orange and red, a breathtaking sight.
“Xiaoli, look, it’s so beautiful!” Lu Zixuan exclaimed, pointing at the scenery in the distance, his voice tinged with excitement.
I nodded, “Yeah, it really is beautiful.”
In that moment, I suddenly felt that watching the scenery with him was more wonderful than the scenery itself.
As we descended the mountain, the sky had completely darkened. Lu Zixuan continued to carry me on his back, carefully taking each step. I lay against him, listening to his steady breathing, feeling an immense sense of comfort and security in my heart.
