Recently, I have been feeling that Lu Zixuan is acting strangely. He is no longer as enthusiastic as before; sometimes when I take the initiative to talk to him, he responds lightly, avoiding my gaze as if he is deliberately trying to evade me. Is it because of Lin Weiwei? A heavy stone seems to weigh down on my heart, making it hard for me to breathe.
One afternoon, I intended to invite him to lunch. "Lu Zixuan, want to go to the cafeteria together?" I walked to the classroom door but didn’t see him.
"Xiaoli, Zixuan went to the rooftop. He doesn’t seem to be in a good mood," my deskmate Xiao Ya informed me.
My heart tightened with worry. "What happened? Do you know?"
Xiao Ya shook her head. "I don’t know, but I saw that his face didn’t look good. He seems troubled. It might… be related to a confession? I saw Lin Weiwei and her friend with a pretty big gift box; I have no idea what’s inside."
After hesitating for a moment, I decided to check on him at the rooftop. "Thank you, Xiao Ya."
Before I reached the rooftop door, I heard Lin Weiwei's voice, tinged with a hint of tears: "Zixuan, I like you. Will you be my boyfriend?" Other classmates around were teasing, chanting, "Say yes! Say yes!" The atmosphere was ambiguous and sweet, yet it felt like sharp thorns piercing my heart.
The pain in my chest was overwhelming. I hid behind the wall, too afraid to step out or leave.
"Zixuan..." Lin Weiwei looked at him expectantly, her eyes red and pitiful.
I could no longer bear it and turned to flee from this place. Tears welled up in my eyes as I bit down hard on my lip, trying not to cry out loud.
"I'm sorry, Weiwei," Lu Zixuan's voice suddenly rang out, laced with regret. "I already have someone I like."
My footsteps froze, and my heart skipped a beat. He has someone he likes? Who could it be? Could it… be me?
I turned back quietly, filled with anticipation, my heart racing as I held my breath, eager to catch every word he said.
"Please don't do things like this anymore," Lu Zixuan continued, his tone gentle yet firm. "It really bothers me. I've turned you down many times; we just aren't right for each other."
At that moment, Lin Weiwei's best friend approached, grabbing Lin Weiwei's arm with a dissatisfied tone. "Weiwei, don’t be like this. He’s not worth it! Just look at how he treats Su Xiaoli—bringing her milk tea every day, saving her a seat, getting her food. It’s practically written all over his face that he likes her! He’s clearly trying to make you back off by claiming he has someone he likes so he can go after Su Xiaoli! This is just a classic case of playing hard to get—he's nothing but a scumbag!"
Lu Zixuan hurriedly tried to explain, "No, I didn’t mean to play hard to get. The person I like..."
Before he could finish, Lin Weiwei's friend interrupted him loudly. "Stop explaining! We can all see through it! Just stop pretending! Weiwei, let’s go! There are plenty of fish in the sea; why cling to just one?"
Without waiting for a response, she pulled Lin Weiwei away and hurried off the rooftop.
"Zixuan, you really... disappoint me!" Lin Weiwei shot him a sad glance before leaving.
I hid in the corner, my mind swirling with Lu Zixuan's words: "I already have someone I like."
Someone he likes... really?
