Zeus received a package and thought it was a gift from his sisters. He carefully looked at each photo and the encouraging words written on the back, feeling grateful for such a thoughtful sister. He stored the photos away with care.
What Zeus didn’t know was that in his daily livestreams, there was a fan named Shmily who quietly stayed in his chat room. Every day, she sent light sticks and hung up banners, watching him chat with his sisters. Even when Yun Li went live, she would log into her alternate account and remain in his stream, just muting her phone.
One day, Zeus connected with him. He was excited to call out brother Si, but remembering their recent boundary-crossing, he quickly changed it to "Brother," as if they were just ordinary colleagues. Listening to him discuss collaborative projects in a businesslike tone dampened his cheerful mood. After wrapping up the conversation, it seemed they had no reason to continue chatting, and after exchanging a few hurried words, Zeus exited the call.
Yun Li thought to himself: Wasn’t it agreed that he would only be a fan? Just a brief connection, returning to their colleague identities—why was he feeling down about it?
After finishing the livestream with a slightly heavy heart, Yun Li opened his alternate account to watch Zeus’s stream. However, when he saw who Zeus was connected with, he couldn’t help but be taken aback.
He heard the teacher’s voice from the stream: “I just missed you but didn’t dare to disturb you.”
Actually, I missed you too; however, not disturbing you is my final act of kindness.
So that song was your favorite? It turns out this song could also be a reward; it could be sung for someone else too. And my collaboration? Well, it’s just work. I thought collaboration was a special beginning and felt proud thinking that gathering many people to invite you wouldn’t seem so abrupt. But from the moment we scheduled the collaboration, I realized it was already a countdown to goodbye.
It’s nice that the teacher found a legitimate reason to connect with you. Aside from collaboration—oh wait, now even that reason seems to have vanished. I can’t find a valid excuse to reach out anymore.
Love makes the timid brave; the kind of passionate love you wanted seems to have truly arrived. It’s wonderful that someone has come for you and has made you gentle. My sisters all say you two are well-matched—indeed, you are. This teacher is generous and brave, unlike me, who always ends up awkwardly frozen.
But I’ve been brave too; I just won’t say those things you pretended not to understand anymore. There won’t be another chance because I’ve run out of courage—it feels like all of it has been spent.
Unable to bear the disappointment swelling within him, Yun Li hurriedly exited the livestream room. He couldn’t listen any longer; if he did, that sense of unwillingness would surge back into his heart once more.
Do not cross the line; I cannot cross it again. Acting on impulse will only lead to repeating past mistakes. It was agreed, it was promised, to be a fan and simply accompany him—that alone is a source of happiness.
After a long time without setting off firecrackers, Yun Li found some in the corner of the drawer and lit them. It had been so long that the first puff of smoke caught him off guard, making him cough uncontrollably, tears streaming from the corners of his eyes.
Yun Li touched his tear-streaked face, staring at the flickering red sparks in his hand, his mind a chaotic mess. In a daze, he recalled a line from The Little Prince: "If you want to create a bond with someone, you must be willing to risk tears."
Tears? He wasn't afraid of that; it was just the tumultuous beating of his heart that he didn't know how to calm.
