A few days passed, and by Friday, Counselor Teacher Zhou held a class meeting. He began with a summary of the semester so far and briefly outlined the agenda for the meeting:
The first item was to elect a new class committee through anonymous voting, as everyone had become familiar with each other over the past three months.
The second item was to convey the school's opinions on work-study programs.
The third item was to announce the list of students receiving financial aid for impoverished students.

After the first agenda item concluded, Jie Bing only received seven votes from the thirty-eight classmates. Hu Ruoyun became the Youth League Secretary, and Cui Shuigen was elected as the sports committee member...
When the final results were announced, not only did Jie Bing fail to become class monitor, but he didn't win any other position either.
For the second agenda item, Teacher Zhou conveyed several opinions from Jiangbei University’s Student Affairs Office and the school’s working committee regarding work-study programs for students. The opinions stated that work-study opportunities were not limited to tutoring or paid work within the school... As long as it did not interfere with studies and complied with existing laws and regulations, students were encouraged to participate in economic activities within reasonable limits as long as it was not explicitly prohibited by the Business Administration Department.
For the third agenda item, Cui Shuigen from their class was included in the list of students receiving financial aid from the school and would receive a subsidy of 500 yuan each academic year.
Jie Bing raised his hand to speak up immediately, arguing that since Cui Shuigen made money from business outside of school, he should not continue to receive financial aid! Teacher Zhou signaled for him to sit down after listening to his comments without expressing any opinion or changing the school’s subsidy list... Jie Bing sat down with a grim expression, failing to notice that his classmates were looking at him strangely.
In the following days, Jie Bing's mood deteriorated. He first got into an argument with his roommate Zhao Jinpu over water from his thermos and later yelled at his other roommate for borrowing toilet paper in a rush due to an upset stomach... It felt somewhat like he was going through a midlife crisis.
Half a month later, both of Jie Bing's parents came to visit and treated all the dormitory students to a meal at Peach Garden Restaurant near the east gate.
At the dinner table, Jie Bing's mother introduced herself, saying she had been promoted from the police station to Deputy Director of the District Justice Bureau (in charge of operations). She also mentioned that Jie Bing's father was Director of the Science and Technology Committee in Dongyang City’s Fulong District (a department-level position) and asked everyone to take care of her son since he was still young... stressing the importance of mutual unity and kindness while warning against bullying those who are weaker...
This left several classmates exchanging glances, unsure of how to react.
Perhaps in their eyes, the end of the universe lay in Dongyang City.
On another day, Hu Ruoyun received a letter from her younger sister Xiao Feng:
Brother:
Our mother, father, Xiao Hu, and I are all well. Second Uncle, Second Aunt, Grandma, Grandfather, Uncle, and Aunt-in-law are also doing fine; don't worry about us.

Hu Ruoyun recalled that some time ago, Cui Shuigen had inexplicably mentioned wanting to see his ID card; it must have been this guy who had his family send it over.
He nudged Cui Shuigen, who was dozing on the upper bunk, and asked. Cui Shuigen grinned foolishly and replied, "It's nothing, Brother San. I asked my dad to specifically pick out some good ones at the market for me... Don't be so pretentious with me; that would be too boring."
On another day, Hu Ruoyun received a letter from Zhang Meina, a classmate from the Provincial Police Academy. Zhang asked Hu Ruoyun when he would be free because she and her boyfriend wanted to visit him at Jiangbei Postal and Telecommunications School to see Mao Na: "We're all from the same hometown, so we should keep in touch more often since our hometown isn't far away. We can visit each other frequently when we're back in Annan..."
Having learned from past experiences, Hu Ruoyun now makes it a point to check in at Mao Na's school almost every weekend. He also mentioned Zhang Meina's intentions to Mao Na, who did not give a definite answer: "Sure, let's find a time to get together when we have the chance!"
Beauty Mao did not specify when or where to meet or in what form the gathering would take place. Hu Ruoyun was hesitant to make any decisions on his own, so Zhang Meina's proposal for her and her boyfriend to meet with Hu Ruoyun and Mao Na was indefinitely postponed...
