The night was deep, and a heavy silence enveloped the room. The white wedding dress hung on the hanger, as if waiting for a grand ceremony, while I stood by the window, clutching the letter that changed everything.
The handwriting on the letter seemed to carry feelings he had yet to let go of; it belonged to another woman—“L.”
I had always believed I was his one and only, the partner he would spend his life with. But now, I realized that before me, he had loved another deeply, someone he was even willing to make promises to.
The memories described in the letter were so warm and sweet. The days they spent together, their promises and future plans seemed to mock my naivety.
It turned out that in his heart, I was just a substitute.
With trembling hands, I folded the letter back up and placed it into its envelope. Tomorrow was supposed to be the wedding day, yet on this significant eve, I uncovered such a secret. This revelation struck like a sharp sword, shattering all my fantasies about the future.
I gazed out the window, the night heavy around me, the city lights flickering in the distance, yet they could not dispel the gloom in my heart. Was there still a need for tomorrow's wedding? After learning all of this, could I still walk down the aisle with him with a clear conscience?
Suddenly, my phone lit up; it was a message from him: "Darling, our wedding is tomorrow! I can't wait to see you in your wedding dress."
Reading that message sent a sharp pain through my heart. Once upon a time, I had eagerly anticipated this day, but now all that expectation had turned into an unbearable anguish.
I didn’t reply to his message; I simply tossed my phone onto the bed. The words from the letter echoed in my mind—those glaring phrases about them, their memories together, their plans for the future—a future I had never been a part of.
I paced back and forth in my room, my thoughts a tangled mess. Should I confront him? Should I face him now and demand clarity on everything? But if I did that, would the wedding still go on as planned? Could our relationship ever return to what it once was?
No, perhaps it was already too late for all of that. After discovering this secret, our future had been shrouded in an indelible shadow.
In the end, I decided to step out of the room. I needed some time to calm down and think about my choices for tomorrow. I gently pushed open the door, and the cool night breeze hit me, bringing a slight clarity to my mind.
Walking down the empty street, memories replayed in my head over and over again. Our meeting, our knowing each other, our love—everything had once been so beautiful. But now, that beauty had been torn apart and lay in tatters.
Perhaps I had never truly known him. Perhaps in his heart, I had always been just a placeholder. And that woman named "L" was the one he had truly loved.
