Lost in her thoughts, Lin Aishi looked up. The scenery outside the car window was no different from what she had seen three years ago. Yet, she was filled with an overwhelming fear of the unknown future; all that remained for her now was emptiness and despair.
She gazed at the former "cage," feeling a chill run through her body. "Why have you brought me back here?"
"To ensure you never forget the past," Zi Dingqian replied.
He lifted her chin, his gaze intense. "While you're with me, you are not allowed to think about other men."
He had said the same thing four years ago.
Lin Aishi felt a moment of disorientation, unable to distinguish whether she was in the past or present. She shook herself awake and said, "Leave An Ruochen alone; he knows nothing."
Zi Dingqian did not respond to her plea but instead asked, "Do you know why I must deal with the men around you?"
Lin Aishi waited for his answer.
"Because I can't stand to see you happy; that image is too blinding!"
This was indeed something he would say—extremely domineering yet utterly helpless.
"Zi Dingqian, have you ever tasted failure? Do you know what it feels like to be defeated?"
He surely had not experienced it, which allowed him to remain so arrogant.
Zi Dingqian opened his mouth but then closed it again; he had tasted it.
The first time, she had been stubborn and proud, ignoring his existence. He insisted on her submission, and she eventually complied, but only to get money to save First Love. The second time, after she gave birth to their child, he wanted to cast her aside harshly to make her understand the consequences of ignoring him. Yet she had changed her mind—she wanted only the child, not him.
No matter how he slandered or mocked her, she refused to yield... She gained nothing, yet he lost so much more.
She had endured countless hardships outside, falling down and getting back up time and again, determined not to turn back and beg him for help... How could he not understand what defeat meant?
And now, she had finally returned to his side, but it was to plead for another man.
She had never done anything for him.
“Lin Aishi, I remember your First Love died on the operating table, right?” Zi Dingqian suddenly spoke, his words dripping with cruelty. “Your son is over three years old and has never seen you. The people you wanted to protect, you couldn't save a single one... Tell me, who is the real failure here?”
Lin Aishi's eyes reddened. “Zi Dingqian, you bastard!”
“Let’s hope An Ruochen stays safe,” Zi Dingqian sneered. “During this time, don’t leave here, or I won’t spare him!”
“Zi Dingqian, you bastard! I will hate you for a lifetime!”
Zi Dingqian paused for a moment and replied nonchalantly, “That’s fine.”
To hate for a lifetime also meant to think of him for a lifetime.
In the villa, she was all alone. There was plenty of food and water, but no television, no internet, and no newspapers—only her and the occasional visits from Zi Dingqian.
He was deliberately punishing her!
Lin Aishi curled up on the carpet, waiting for the man who might not even come.
She had given up; she surrendered to her fate.
Upon reflection, their constant arguments seemed to stem from that incident...
She didn’t want it anymore; she truly didn’t want it. No matter how much she felt reluctant, she could no longer bear it.
A knocking sound came from outside the door. Lin Aishi wanted to go open it, but her limbs felt numb. By the time she managed to stand up, the visitor had already entered—it was Ding Anmin and a drunken Zi Dingqian.
“Manager Zi got drunk; he insisted on coming here,” Ding Anmin explained.
Lin Aishi remained silent as she watched Ding Anmin help Zi Dingqian onto the bed and carefully wipe the sweat from his face before stepping back out.
Once the door was closed, Ding Anmin weakly said, “Aishi, I don’t want to get involved in your matters, but could you please stop tormenting the president?”
Lin Aishi looked bewildered. "Am I the one tormenting him? Who is really tormenting whom?"
"The CEO went out for drinks today because of you," Ding Anmin said. "Do you really have no idea? He loves you! Otherwise, do you think someone would waste years of their life on someone unrelated to them, just to see you unhappy?"
Ding Anmin suppressed the bitterness in her heart and continued, "If you don't like him, then set him free. Don't torment him! If you do like him, wouldn't it be better for everyone to be together? Why don't you cherish a man who loves you? Do you know how rare that is?"
"Anmin, you've fallen for Zi Dingqian," Lin Aishi said in surprise, not as a question but as a certainty.
"But he loves you." If it were someone else, she would definitely fight for him. But this was Lin Aishi, her former best friend. She couldn't bring herself to steal him away, nor could she.
"Anmin, you're mistaken," Lin Aishi said with a bitter smile. "He doesn't love me."
He would never love her; that was certain!
No one would treat someone they liked so cruelly.
So don’t try to deceive her; such tricks were not amusing at all.
Seeing Lin Aishi's evasive expression, Ding Anmin shook her head and sighed.
