The sky darkened, and suddenly a chilling wind swept through, sending the grass basket beside me rolling.
Out of nowhere, a figure appeared on the deserted street. I crouched in the shadowy corner of the alley, completely unaware of when that person had shown up. By the time I noticed, they were slowly approaching me.
I shrank my neck and tightened my fists. The figure's shadow stretched long, casting a dark silhouette on the ground, as if some monstrous creature was lurking in the dark corners of Lin'an City, plotting something sinister.
Without a moment's hesitation, I was about to spring out and apprehend the thief when someone grabbed my arm, muffling my startled cry.
"Shh, don't make a sound!"
My pupils dilated in shock; I realized I had been too lax in my training or perhaps Yun Yi was truly more elusive than I had thought. I hadn't even noticed he had followed me, let alone gotten so close.
At that moment, another figure suddenly emerged ahead of us. Familiar with the aura of demons, I instantly recognized this being. No, this demon. It must be the Evil Demon that the innkeeper had mentioned.
I could see swirling black demonic energy surrounding her—a miasma tainted by the blood of countless victims. It seemed that a demon had indeed violated the pact and was maliciously harming others.
The demon seized the person and soared into the air. Only then did I get a clear look at her face; she was a frail woman. Just as their figures were about to vanish from my sight, I was ready to break free from Yun Yi's grasp and pursue them.
However, Yun Yi released me first, innocently raising his hands in surrender as if to say he was not involved. He pointed toward the direction where the two had disappeared, silently urging me to hurry before it was too late.
I shot a fierce glare at my irresponsible master but felt a growing sense of vigilance toward him deep down.
He might not be as useless as he appears to me.
Just as I stepped out into the open, Yun Yi grabbed me again. When I turned back to look at him, he gave a silly grin and added, "Take me with you, disciple! You know I don't have much power!"
Perhaps my probing gaze was too direct; he hesitated before revealing the truth. "I just happened to see you leaving the inn while I was... well, you know, and I was worried about you, so I followed."
"Xiao Liuzi, if you don't hurry, that Evil Demon will vanish without a trace!"
There wasn't much time for further questioning. I grabbed Yun Yi by the collar and silently quickened my pace to catch up with the two ahead of us.
The Evil Demon was quite cautious. I focused all my attention, ensuring I didn't give myself away as I stealthily followed. In the end, the Evil Demon wound through Lin'an City in a convoluted path, eventually returning to a nearby academy not far from where we started.
The academy's sign looked familiar; it was the same one Yun Yi and I passed when we went to the inn. I had thought about sneaking in for a look since it was bustling with activity and filled with the sound of reading. But in the end, Yun Yi had pulled me away with his remark, "Elegant sounds won't fill our stomachs."
Was it truly an unintentional act on his part? Or something more?
"Xiao Liuzi, where is this? Ugh..."
As soon as Yun Yi landed, he stumbled and leaned against a nearby railing before throwing up.
I silently facepalmed, chiding myself for overthinking things. Out of the corner of my eye, however, I noticed dark blood energy rising above the academy.
This is bad; that woman!
