With a sharp sound, the Paper Figurine remained motionless as Mu Zuo advanced, step by step, closing in on it, almost reaching its back.
Unexpectedly, the Paper Figurine turned around at that moment. A gust of wind blew through, parting its hair to reveal a paper face, with features drawn in ink.
Startled, Mu Zuo took a few steps back, only to see Zhao Dehui's head flying toward him!
Mu Zuo dodged the head, and the Paper Figurine suddenly leaped toward the main road, its legs resembling two bamboo poles.
Mu Zuo shouted, "Where do you think you're going, monster?"
He then gave chase. After less than half a mile, the Paper Figurine jumped into the dense forest and vanished from sight.
Mu Zuo leaped into the woods, where darkness enveloped him. The night wind howled like a banshee.
Regaining his composure, Mu Zuo searched cautiously. Suddenly, he heard a strange noise from above. He looked up just in time to see a white shadow descending from the sky. He swung his blade to block it, and with a loud crack, one Paper Figurine was sliced in half, splattering blood onto Mu Zuo's clothing!
At that moment, torches lit up outside the forest as Xu Yan led a group of soldiers into the woods. Seeing Mu Zuo's blood-stained clothes, Xu Yan rushed over and grasped his hand, asking, "Are you alright?"
Mu Zuo did not respond immediately; his eyes were fixed on the two halves of the Paper Figurine on the ground.
After several calls from Xu Yan, Mu Zuo finally exhaled deeply and said, "I am fine. But this Paper Figurine bled; could it really be alive?"
Xu Yan, with tears in his eyes, angrily exclaimed, "You fool! Why do you always act alone? If something were to happen to you, how could I find peace for the rest of my life?"
Hearing this, Mu Zuo knelt down and bowed in gratitude. "I am just a humble warrior, and it is thanks to your guidance that I have found the right path. If you do not abandon me, I, Mu Zuo, am willing to follow you for life, facing any danger without hesitation!"
Xu Yan helped Mu Zuo to his feet, and the two exchanged glances filled with unspoken emotions, choking back tears.
Outside the forest, Liu Fengling was furious. "That Zhang Zhao! He is more of a hindrance than a help! Days have passed, and his army still hasn’t arrived! After this, I will make sure his commander punishes him severely!"
Xu Yan stepped forward to offer some comforting words, but Liu Fengling remained uncontrollably angry and sighed deeply before sweeping away in frustration.
In the ancestral hall of Xiawa Village, the bodies of Zhao Lao Si and Zhao Dehui had been pieced together and were prepared for burial.
Xu Yan looked at the two Paper Figurines on the ground, his mind troubled. A servant came to report that the Paper Figurine responsible for Zhao Dehui's death came from the Changping Village Head's family, and all the Paper Figurines in Changping Village had grown hair!
Just as Xu Yan was about to investigate further, a village woman burst in. She collapsed in the hall and trembled upon seeing the two corpses on the ground, unable to speak. It took nearly an incense stick's worth of time for her to regain her composure.
Xu Yan approached her and learned that her name was the Tian. She was a widow from Xiawa Village whose husband had died from illness years ago.
the Tian had initially intended to remain loyal to her husband's memory and uphold her virtue in hopes of earning a posthumous title of chastity. However, fate had other plans.
Since her husband's death, the Tian's household lacked male support and lived in hardship, relying on the charity of villagers. With her beauty and having never borne children, she attracted many men's attention and schemes. Among them, Zhao Lao Si was particularly attentive, often helping her with firewood and water and occasionally bringing her cosmetics.
Years passed, and the Tian could no longer bear the loneliness, secretly engaging in an affair with Zhao Lao Si, indulging in disgraceful acts.
One night, the Tian waited at home for Zhao Lao Si to come for a tryst, but as time went by without his arrival, she decided to sneak over to Zhao Lao Si's house to spy. To her surprise, she found the village chief drinking and chatting with Zhao Lao Si, both clearly inebriated. Everything they said was clearly overheard by the Tian from outside the window.
It turned out that not long ago, the villagers of Changping and Xiawa had gathered in the mountains for a brawl, and County Magistrate and master Chen had intervened to divide the mining rights between them.
All of this was due to the dwindling supply of ore in the mountains; if things continued this way, it would be difficult to meet the tax demands of the court.
