Shen Jingyu let out a deep breath, gritting his teeth as he set aside the breakfast in his hand. He then grabbed a nearby air conditioning blanket and draped it over her.
Seeing her sleep so uncomfortably, Shen Jingyu frowned. He wrapped her in the blanket and gently turned her over before lifting her into his arms. In that moment, her unique fragrance wafted into his nostrils. The warmth of her soft body against him was enough to stir any man’s heart, especially since she was the woman he cherished most.
However, there were still battles to fight; he needed to keep his composure. It would be wiser for him to take a cold shower to clear his head.
After carefully placing Su Xing back on the bed and tucking her in, he stood up. At that moment, a photo on her bedside table caught his eye. It was a picture of them from their second year together, taken when Su Xing had received a bonus and decided to take him to Kagoshima Water Town for a relaxing getaway.
To save money, they had walked for two hours instead of taking the tourist bus, exploring every inch of Ying Chi together. She was always attentive; whenever she sensed he was tired, she would stop to rest. To keep him entertained, she shared countless facts about the flowers they encountered—starting with the basics of Ying Yu, then moving on to Zheng Qi, their growing environments, and even which types of soil were best suited for them.
In those moments, she seemed to be everything in his life. When they were together, memories were created; when apart, he slowly reminisced.
The photo captured a moment under the brightest sun in a field of sunflowers—he had taken it for her. The beauty preserved in that image paled in comparison to what she meant to him. There should also be another picture of the two of them together in a rose garden. In that one, she had playfully pushed at the corners of his lips with her fingers, coaxing a rare smile from him.
He wondered where that photo had ended up but firmly believed she wouldn’t have discarded it.
Shen Jingyu stared at the frame for three full minutes.
Su Xing, unable to withstand the weight of sleep any longer, turned away from him while mumbling incoherently.
Realizing this, Shen Jingyu tucked the blanket around her more snugly before sighing softly as he stepped out and closed the bedroom door behind him.
Since he was already up, Shen Jingyu placed the food on the dining table and quickly cleared away a dozen empty beer bottles and two empty wine bottles from the coffee table before tossing them out.
With her eyes tightly shut, Su Xing only opened them when she heard the sound of the door closing. As soon as her eyelids lifted, a tear rolled down her cheek.
Turning over, she reached for the frame and carefully opened it from behind—it was indeed their only picture together.
Su Xing gazed at it for a long time as tears flowed freely from her eyes like an unturnable faucet, gradually soaking her pillow.
She didn’t know when she drifted back into a hazy sleep again, seemingly still longing for that embrace from moments before.
Shen Jingyu had always been a reserved man; even if someone fell at his feet, he wouldn’t extend a hand to help. The tenderness he had just shown—holding her like a precious princess—was something rare and deeply cherished.
Su Xing sensed something was off as she turned in her sleep, but after catching a whiff of his unique scent, she inexplicably chose to pretend to be asleep. This led to both of them reminiscing over that photo later on.
Su Xing had fallen into a deep sleep while Mu Beiyao relentlessly tried to reach her.
“Bao Er, where are you?”
“It’s one-thirty; even if you’re lost, you should be on your way to the company by now.”
“Ancestor, it’s two o’clock! You’re not being kidnapped, are you? If you don’t answer soon, I’m calling the police!”
Fortunately, Mu Beiyao had Su Xing’s location on her phone and knew she was at home; otherwise, she would have really called the police.
While Mu Beiyao communicated with the designer about the styling, she instructed her secretary to keep dialing Su Xing’s number until she picked up.
Finally, just after two ten, Su Xing rubbed her sleepy eyes and got out of bed to find her phone flashing in the living room. She plugged it in just before the battery died and answered Mu Beiyao’s call.
“Goodness, have your eyes grown fur from sleeping so long? You’re only answering me now?” Mu Beiyao struck precisely at Su Xing.
After gulping down a large mouthful of water in the kitchen to wake herself up, Su Xing casually replied, “Yeah, what time is it? I’ll head over soon.”
“Bao Er, if you don’t leave now, the sun will set! It’s already past two in the afternoon!”
“What?” Su Xing was surprised; she hadn’t realized she had slept for so long.
Sitting at the dining table, she noticed the breakfast bag and remembered that Shen Jingyu had come by earlier that morning.
“Yao Yao, just pick out some clothes for me; I’ll come by later.”
After hanging up the phone, Su Xing touched the breakfast bag and then glanced at a few unread messages on her phone.
A message from that year when they hadn’t been in touch lit up again.
“Xingxing, wake up and eat breakfast. Don’t casually tell others your home door code!” Shen Jingyu had texted.
Su Xing curled her lips in indifference. “I’m just too easy for you to read! Otherwise, how could you have gotten in?”
Not knowing if that man was still watching his screen, she received another message from him the moment she read his last: “Awake? The breakfast has gone cold. Should I send someone to bring you food or will you make something yourself?”
Su Xing thought to herself, “Who are you to tell me what to do?” He was really getting too full of himself with that Dominant CEO attitude!
However, after deliberating for a long time over what to say, she ended up deleting everything she typed without sending a single word.
After a lengthy internal struggle, she considered removing him from her friend list. Perhaps it was best for them to keep their distance.
As a result, it felt as if she were being monitored by Shen Jingyu. Just as she was about to open the delete interface, his message came through.
"Star, don’t think about blocking me. You know I can add you without going through you."
Hey, Su Xing suddenly remembered that this guy had taught himself programming and could be quite the hacker!
"I'll change my number now and keep in touch less. Thanks for breakfast."
Just as Su Xing was about to put down her phone, she couldn't help but burst into laughter at the cute emoji he sent.
"Life is bleak, Sister, please take care of me."
What the heck? He really has become more lively?
Little did Su Xing know that Shen Jingyu had bought the "Love Manual" to study just to pursue her.
Su Xing put down her phone and stood up, but then couldn't resist sending him an emoji back: "Sister can’t afford to take care of you."
Meanwhile, Shen Jingyu was in a meeting at the company, openly distracted. He raised an eyebrow at his phone screen, completely unsure how long he would be able to sneak away.
After sending that message, Su Xing couldn't help but shiver a little. How did she suddenly become so childish?
After quickly freshening up and getting ready, she went downstairs in twenty minutes. This was just enough time for Yang Zekai to bring her car over.
Su Xing received the car keys in the parking garage and dropped Yang Zekai off at the entrance of the community. During those few minutes, she instructed him, "Yang Zekai, keep an eye out for any out-of-town businessmen at the bar and let me know immediately. Also, keep an eye on a few other shops on the street."
"Got it." Yang Zekai didn’t quite understand but still took her orders seriously.
When Su Xing arrived at the top-floor office of Starry Convergence, it was already three in the afternoon.
Mu Beiyao had picked out a dress for her; all that was left was for a stylist to accompany her while they waited.
As soon as Su Xing pushed the door open, Mu Beiyao, dressed in a slanted-shoulder black gown, abruptly looked up from her computer.
Seeing Su Xing's haggard face startled her. She exaggeratedly stood up and leaned closer to examine it.
"Tsk tsk tsk, is it really that bad? Did Bao Er's news upset you so much? Your eyes are puffy like water balloons! Did your eyes flow like a waterfall last night?"
