After a brief moment, Shen Lao continued, "To deal with such individuals, or even such organizations, the country needs special talents! It also requires the tightest network! But now, you, Su Xing, will become the key to the success or failure of this mission regarding Shen Jingyu!"
Shen Zhengxin's gaze turned sharp, leaving Su Xing in confusion. For a moment, Su Xing felt a rush of anxiety, but she seemed to understand. Although Shen Jingyu had changed careers, he was still a soldier. Moreover, with a grandfather like him, even if he lacked a sense of national mission, it would inevitably emerge under his influence.
It was highly likely that at this very moment, Shen Jingyu was striving for something significant. Perhaps they had reached a critical juncture. Su Xing suddenly realized some things. But why did she have to be the key to his success or failure? In the face of national righteousness, personal feelings and loves were insignificant.
Shen Lao had successfully awakened Su Xing's sense of patriotism. "Then I will take my leave!" she declared.
"Shen Lao, I am not someone who lacks understanding," Su Xing replied. "Since you mentioned that there is a matter of great importance at hand, my sense of national mission does not allow me to become a burden to the country."
"Therefore, I will distance myself from Shen Jingyu. I do not want to be a hindrance or a burden to him. What do you think?"
"Or perhaps I am foolish and have misunderstood your intentions; please feel free to clarify."
Maybe he wanted her to leave for another place entirely.
Su Xing found it difficult to make such a decision immediately; after all, she had lived in many places and had family and friends.
Shen Lao hadn’t expected this young girl to be so discerning. However, she hadn’t truly grasped his meaning.
Shen Lao slowly spoke again, his tone heavy with significance: "You can no longer remain aloof."
There was a profound sense of regret in his eyes, as if he bore an irreparable sorrow.
"I still stand by my words: can you stand alongside Jingyu without reservation?"
To be honest, it was difficult.
Su Xing replied candidly, "I cannot know all the details of the mission and therefore cannot fully understand some of his actions. Besides, I have my own career; I cannot easily abandon my own path."
If she couldn't do something, Su Xing would never casually agree to it; that was her principle in life. Moreover, she was very clear that one could only thrive in their area of expertise.
Shen Lao slightly curled the corners of his lips, seemingly satisfied with Su Xing's answer. However, he maintained his stern demeanor, having long been accustomed to speaking as if issuing commands.
"But I need you to always stand on the same side as Jing Yu. Listen to his orders."
"Old man, are you a fascist? Do you even hear what you're saying?" Su Xing pondered how to respond to him, considering that he was an elder and Shen Jingyu's blood relative.
Suddenly, the sound of an engine grew louder, and a beam of headlights approached from a distance. When Shen Jingyu got out of the car, he didn't even have time to turn off the engine. He hurried over to Su Xing while saying, "Why should she listen to me? Why should she live according to your demands?"
Su Xing raised an eyebrow. Was this man blessed with keen hearing? Even with the windows down during the drive, he had caught his grandfather's words amidst the noise.
Shen Zhengxin didn't seem surprised that Shen Jingyu rushed back so quickly. However, he felt annoyed at his grandson for speaking up for someone else in such a tone against him.
"Is this how you should treat your own grandfather?!" Shen Zhengxin scolded sharply.
"If you continue to act in ways that deserve no respect, I won't hesitate to sever our ties," Shen Jingyu replied coldly and unfriendly.
At first glance, their tones and attitudes bore some resemblance. Shen Jingyu looked at Su Xing with concern, worried that she might feel wronged by the exchange.
Su Xing smiled gently at him and shook her head slightly. It was just a normal interaction between elders and juniors; her heart wasn't that fragile.
Shen Jingyu tightly grasped Su Xing's hand, as if doing so would not only provide her with a sense of security but also bring him some comfort.
Seeing Shen Jingyu's stance, Shen Zhengxin felt a surge of frustration and let out a heavy snort. He began to reprimand and threaten Shen Jingyu: "You're just like your father! For a woman, you've really gone too far! Hmph! You little brat, do your job properly! Don't let a woman lead you astray!"
"Otherwise," he continued ominously, "if you want to know the truth, I’ll take it with me to the grave. I won’t tell you a single word!"
Su Xing raised an eyebrow; this old man was truly using any means necessary to pressure Shen Jingyu. If he couldn't even protect his own woman, how could he talk about protecting the country?
Shen Jingyu silently endured it; it was clear that he held quite a bit of resentment towards his grandfather.
"Then you’re saying my mother lacks perspective! She’s not a woman who understands the bigger picture! All she knows is family ties! If this girl becomes a burden for you, just watch how I can’t tolerate it!"
Su Xing blinked silently, wondering if the old man was trying to apply eye drops to her. She chose not to engage, knowing that staying out of family disputes was the best way to protect herself.
Shen Jingyu delivered a sharp blow: "What? Is the old man’s criticism not harsh enough for you? Do you want to see your grandson suffer as well?!"
"You!" Shen Zhengxin suddenly stood up from his chair, his finger trembling with anger as he pointed it directly at Shen Jingyu's nose.
Shen Jingyu met his grandfather's fury with a dismissive expression, unflinching in the face of the old man's wrath. "You ungrateful descendant!"
In the end, Shen Zhengxin could only huff in frustration and lower his hand.
Su Xing felt a mix of emotions; it was quite impressive that the old man, despite not needing a cane, could still stand tall and lecture his defiant grandson with such vigor. It must have taken a lot of cultivation to maintain that spirit.
"Let’s go, Xingxing. We shouldn't linger here and be a burden," she said, urging Shen Jingyu to leave.
"From now on, don’t bring anyone or anything without notifying me. In this remote mountain area, do you think I’m not worried about your safety?"
Shen Jingyu's tone was harsh, and it only fueled Shen Zhengxin's fury further.
"You brat! Get back here! How dare you speak about your grandfather like that?! Am I just some heartless monster in your eyes?!"
Shen Zhengxin truly couldn’t hold back any longer; all he wanted was to see this child, yet he felt so guarded against him.
The boy even dared to speculate maliciously about his intentions—this was nothing short of slander! A blatant attack on his lifelong reputation!
Shen Jingyu didn’t stop; he grabbed Su Xing and shoved her into the car, swiftly taking the passenger seat and turning the vehicle around without hesitation.
Inside the house, they could hear Cheng Hui’s agitated voice as she rushed out, only to catch a glimpse of Shen Jingyu’s car disappearing in a cloud of exhaust.
She held a coat in her hands and walked over to drape it over Shen Zhengxin's shoulders. Watching the retreating car filled her eyes with sorrow and helplessness.
"Old Shen, why can't you just talk things over with that child?" she lamented. "You know how important this is for Shen Huai Ming."
Shen Zhengxin grasped her hand tightly. "Ah Hui, he is my own son! Shen Huai Ming is the one who resembles me the most!"
In that moment, those words could not fully express the pain that lay within Shen Zhengxin’s heart.
