As Luo Hao approached, he noticed that a nearby tree was laden with green fruits, their aroma seemingly even sweeter than before. This left him in a bit of a dilemma. After carefully surveying the area, it appeared there were no other poisonous substances around. Could these fruits be toxic?
After some contemplation, Luo Hao decided to wear gloves and pick a few of the fruits to take back for the local healer to examine.
Hmm? What is that delightful scent?
With his eyes narrowed, Su Xing couldn't help but take several deep breaths as an enticing fragrance wafted toward him. When he opened his eyes, he saw Luo Hao preparing to share some treats with Qin Yi!
Are they edible?
Su Xing's eyes sparkled with excitement.
Shen Jingyu, catching a whiff of the aroma, felt a nagging suspicion that these might not be ordinary fruits. Qin Yi quickly covered his nose and urged Luo Hao to take them away.
You dared to pick these? You must be bored out of your mind!
Hey, I’m just trying to quench everyone’s thirst! Luo Hao retorted defiantly.
Qin Yi explained, "Eating these will only make you thirstier, and they can also lead to... well, let’s just say they can cause some rather vivid daydreams!"
Ah? An aphrodisiac? That explains why I could smell them from so far away!
Luo Hao hesitated to discard them; they looked so tempting and delicious, especially since he was feeling quite parched. Seeing the conflicted expression on Luo Hao's face, Qin Yi added, "Sister-in-law can eat them. These green fruits are harmless for women; in moderation, they can even help regulate hormones and enhance beauty."
Luo Hao quickly presented the fruits like a treasure. "Sister-in-law, you should try them! With Brother Yu here, Qin Xiao Yi wouldn’t dare deceive you."
Su Xing was genuinely interested in tasting them and discreetly glanced at Shen Jingyu beside him. He saw Shen Jingyu nodding silently in approval.
Without hesitation, Su Xing took one and bit into it—sweetness exploded in his mouth!
Luo Hao exclaimed, "From now on, I’ll never say you’re unreliable again!" Su Xing gave him a thumbs up.
Shen Jingyu also seemed satisfied with how Luo Hao handled this situation. But just a moment later, Luo Hao added cheekily, "Big Brother can eat too; after we’re done, we can all avoid each other!"
Su Xing found himself caught mid-bite, unsure whether to chew or swallow.
How could this person be so blunt with their words? Shen Jingyu fixed him with a piercing gaze, compelling him to retreat far away. It was a matter of weighing pros and cons; he couldn't be bothered to engage further.
What about that red fruit? Su Xing had eaten two but decided not to continue, knowing that the fruit had other effects; it was better to consume it sparingly. Listening to Shen Jingyu's words, Su Xing followed suit.
Qin Yi glanced at Shen Jingyu. "Did you figure it out? That’s a poisonous fruit!" The more beautiful something was, the more dangerous it tended to be. Shen Jingyu merely had an instinct about it.
The essence extracted from that red fruit could be turned into a hallucinogen, something addictive, and potentially lethal. In short, it was extremely dangerous.
"Ahao, how many of these fruits do you see?" Shen Jingyu asked.
There were many scattered around. Qin Yi added, "This stuff is definitely cultivated on purpose. If they’re too close together, they won’t survive. However, having these two types of fruit together is an even greater danger."
"Was there any wildlife around where you went earlier?" Luo Hao raised an eyebrow, feeling a tightening in his chest. "Are you saying I climbed the tree? Did I get poisoned?"
"Not yet. You have to eat it for it to take effect. You’re such a cautious player; how tightly did you wear your gloves?" Qin Yi understood Luo Hao well enough. He was bold yet meticulous; he wouldn’t let himself take unnecessary risks.
That large snake from earlier must have consumed this fruit and mutated into something formidable. This forest was indeed no ordinary place.
Qin Yi directed his words toward Shen Jingyu. "This is a base for cultivating dangerous species." Shen Jingyu had sensed something off about this place long ago; now he understood why.
Once they left, this location would need close monitoring. If someone was cultivating these fruits, there would surely be others coming to harvest them. Such dangerous items would inevitably lead to one or more perilous connections.
Qin Yi instructed Luo Hao to put those fruits into a bag; he wanted to take them for research. Luo Hao felt the need to wrap them in several layers of cloth for safety.
As the group set off again, Shen Jingyu unfolded the printed map he had brought along before their departure. He pondered for a long time before determining their next route. Without his computer, he could only rely on his memory of aerial views combined with this flat map to navigate their way forward.
With the results in, Shen Jingyu relied on his extensive experience from multiple field operations and the seamless coordination of their seven-member team to successfully lead Su Xing along a familiar path. However, they couldn't find their vehicle. The place they emerged from was not where they had started, and darkness had fallen again.
They had been trapped in the forest all day. When Su Xing felt her stomach grumbling with hunger, she managed to pull out a fruit to ease her hunger, while the other seven men could only watch.
Su Xing's slippers were no match for their combat boots. Thankfully, they were of a flat design; otherwise, her feet would have been covered in blisters after such a long trek. Yet even so, when they walked on the asphalt road, Shen Jingyu noticed that her feet were bleeding.
"Star, what happened to your foot? A Yi, come take a look!"
Shen Jingyu silently scolded himself for being careless; he hadn't realized how uncomfortable she must have been walking for so long.
"It's fine; it’s probably just a popped blister. I haven't walked this much in ages; it's normal," she replied.
Moreover, the holes in her slippers made it easy for twigs, grass, gravel, and dirt to get inside while traversing such rough terrain. Thus, Su Xing had begun to feel extremely uncomfortable earlier that morning.
What good would it do to tell Shen Jingyu? Would it make him feel guilty or force him to carry her? She never imagined that despite her efforts to hide her discomfort and walk normally, Shen Jingyu would still notice.
"Why didn’t you say something sooner? Star, let me carry you," he said, his heart aching for her while his words carried a hint of reproach.
Su Xing sighed helplessly. "I knew you would react like this, which is why I didn’t say anything. Your shoulders are already injured; after walking for so long, how could you possibly carry me?"
Seeing the two of them locked in an argument, Qin Yi suggested, "I still have a bit of bandage left. Sister-in-law, sit down for a moment; let me wrap your foot up so you can walk more comfortably while we continue looking for the car."
"Uh... I can do it myself?" Su Xing was not only reluctant to hold anyone back but also didn’t want a man to see her feet.
"I’ll do it." Without waiting for her response, Shen Jingyu took the bandage from Qin Yi.
Su Xing was taken aback by how he managed it; he half-squatted down and pulled her onto his lap just like that.
She was 1.71 meters tall herself and found herself sitting on his legs as he tended to her feet. At that moment, Su Xing wished she could just disappear into a crack in the ground.
