In front of Ren'ai Hospital, Mu Beiming paced back and forth, seemingly waiting for Mu Beiyao's car to arrive.
"Is the situation serious?" Mu Beiyao asked as she got out of the car, noticing that many other members of the Mu Family had also gathered.
"I don't know, but the special medicine hasn't been developed yet! Aunt, this situation has been building up for more than just a day or two!"
Initially, Jing Yu had anticipated this outcome. Although preparations had been made in advance, it was still beyond remedy. The next question was how long they could hold on.
"Sister Su Xing, I’m not sure if I should have you come over at this time, but I think it would be better for you to handle things on behalf of Jing Yu," Mu Beiming suggested.
Su Xing nodded. "You did the right thing. I should come! Let's go in and take a look."
The top-floor ward was very quiet. A line of people stood outside, including Shen Jingyu's stepfather and his two sons and daughters-in-law.
"Hasn't the Shen Family been notified?" Su Xing quietly asked Mu Beiming.
"Not yet! But it seems that Jing Yu's grandfather and uncle are aware; I estimate they will choose a more appropriate time to visit."
It was indeed quite complicated. Su Xing glanced at the few people outside who were watching intently. She recalled Du Meng’s words about how the Mu Family was not an easy place to be, and it turned out to be eerily prophetic.
Fortunately, Mu Beiyao was by her side. "They are just some irrelevant figures; I'm here, so don’t be afraid! Just do what you need to do!"
As Su Xing passed by those people, she treated them as mere markers along her path, ignoring them completely. Finally, before the elders, she simply nodded lightly and pushed the door open.
Deng Xiaoya was still in a coma, wearing an oxygen mask with several tubes extending from the bedside.
"Will he wake up?" Su Xing asked.
Mu Beiming could answer like a doctor: "It's all up to fate! No one can determine when he will stop breathing."
Earlier, Aunt had mentioned letting him pass naturally without excessive treatment or major surgeries that would involve cutting into his body. She wanted him to meet his beloved in the best possible state. Mu Beiming felt regret on his behalf.
At this moment, Su Xing could understand Deng Xiaoya; there was nothing in this world that could truly empathize with him—only the ability to put oneself in his shoes for a moment. Even in his coma, he still called out for his beloved.
Su Xing hesitated to ask whether Shen Jingyu could make it back in time.
Mu Beiming knew something but chose not to mention it. Some things were better left unsaid.
In the afternoon, Shen Jingyu's other two friends unexpectedly arrived: Duke Shi Shao and Nan Gong Ye, the leader of a criminal organization.
Su Xing was surprised but could understand that they had come specifically because of Shen Jingyu at this critical moment.
They did not disturb Deng Xiaoya in the hospital room, nor did anyone from the Mu Family Main Branch even glance their way or offer a greeting. Instead, they all stood in the hallway accompanying Su Xing.
"Sister-in-law, it seems you might have to bear some hardships at this time! If you need anything, just let us know!" Shen Jingyu, that guy, is tough on the outside but soft-hearted inside. With him not at home, everything falls on us to take care of!
Even though they seemed like they had never met Deng Xiaoya, they spoke as if they were family. Su Xing cast a grateful glance at the three men: it seemed he had indeed found quite a few brothers for life.
"I won't stand in his shoes to thank you all, but I will consider you family from now on!" Su Xing felt this was his most sincere expression of gratitude.
Fortunately, Shen Jingyu and these brothers understood him well.
Nan Gong Ye immediately said, "You are my dear sister-in-law! We are family, so no need for formalities! If Shen Jingyu dares to bully me in the future, you can just give him a good beating!"
Su Xing couldn't help but chuckle, "That’s not necessarily true; I still know who I should support!"
"See? Men have humanity when there are women around! But women, once they have a man, seem to lose their friends!" Mu Beiyao wholeheartedly agreed with this sentiment.
However, with more friends around, Mu Beiyao stood in the hallway not only to accompany her friend but also because she was reluctant to leave.
She leaned in close to her good friend's ear and whispered, "Why is this duke so handsome? He has both a delicate charm and an imposing presence. Are all foreign nobles this beautiful?"
"Those blue eyes... or are they green? He’s so handsome that I can’t even bear to look at his face for too long. I’m afraid I might accidentally fall for him!"
Su Xing was surprised that Mu Beiyao could be so infatuated at this moment.
"Mu Beiyao, isn’t it a bit inappropriate for you to be swooning over someone right now? Didn’t you just say goodbye to someone earlier today?"
"Did you forget? He’s taken!" With this reminder from Su Xing, Mu Beiyao suddenly felt as if she had indeed forgotten something important.
"Is that so? Could it be that this is my fate? Why didn’t I meet him earlier at Lu Xiangzhuang?"
Su Xing was puzzled. "Are you saying that if you had met him earlier, you would have pursued him?"
In fact, back when he was in the Western Country, he had indeed thought about introducing this person to Mu Beiyao! But somehow, it just slipped his mind, and then he missed the opportunity entirely.
It seems this is also fate, destined to happen!
Mu Beiyao clicked her tongue, "Well, that might not be the case. After all, sometimes a handsome guy is only meant to be admired from afar and not to be trifled with. Besides, he’s a noble duke. Although my status is decent, I wouldn’t actively pursue someone, would I?"
It seemed she was slowly circling around the topic! Finally, it felt like Su Xing didn’t seem as cold anymore! Mu Beiyao let out a sigh of relief.
The two chatted for quite a while. Meanwhile, the doctor and Shen Jingyu's stepfather were engaged in conversation. Su Xing was all ears but didn’t catch anything inappropriate. Once they finished their discussion, the two of them prepared to turn back.
"Mu Beiyao, you should head back tonight! There are too many people here; it’s not convenient to stay! I’ll just go into the ward and keep him company by myself!"
"Well, you express your filial piety! I’ll express my love! I’ll stay outside and help keep them company."
As they turned around, Mu Beiyao lowered her head and seemed to spot a pair of familiar leather shoes not too far away.
Su Xing remarked, "Didn’t we just say we wouldn’t speak out of turn? Now running off like this—won’t it affect the sisters? What will you explain later?"
"I think I need to go find my boyfriend! He stayed with me last night and worked really hard! I don’t even know if he’s tired from work today!"
"How about this? I’ll drive to pick her up after work! Xingxing, you just stay here and keep Aunt company! It’s also for the sake of being filial to your future husband!"
At that moment, it was time to see how well she performed. "I support you!" Mu Beiyao didn’t know what got into her but suddenly shifted the topic back to Su Xing.
Seeing him not daring to lift his head, she realized that he knew everything and was just stalling for time to come up with a plan!
