This mission is quite special; Gu Zheng has personally come out to lead the team.
This time, we must strike decisively! Split into two teams and prepare for battle! Colonel Gu Bai will lead one group into the mountains to search for the lairs of privately raised beasts and drug production. They will wait for the right moment to take them all out at once. The other group, Luo Hao will stay behind to take care of the Army Commander, ensuring logistical support is ready at any moment for the second team to assist Colonel Gu's squad. They must also be on guard!
As for Shen Jingyu himself, he initially intended to go alone, seeking his father in a secluded village. However, just as he was about to set off, Gu Zheng decided to accompany him. Colonel Gu even teased him, saying, "Son, you’re not this worried! My brother is just eagerly following along!"
Gu Zheng was too tired to argue with his son. He firmly stated in response to Shen Jingyu's refusal: "My brother Da Jiu is not only a burden on my wife's heart but also a comrade I fought alongside in the past. I don’t know if you’ll find him, but I must bring them back! Not just Shen Huai Ming, but also Su Bokan."
In the end, Shen Jingyu did not refuse. Under the cover of night, the two changed into combat gear, shouldered their packs, and set off on an unknown path.
In the Border region lies a primeval forest connecting two areas; they had chosen a location that was quite enigmatic—a place neither side could control. It was also very secluded; outsiders would find it difficult to enter. Especially for someone like Shen Jingyu and Gu Shouzhang, who clearly exuded an aura of formidable strength.
As dawn broke, they finally reached the mouth of a valley and spotted a row of hungry wolves resting lazily in the distance! The boulders on either side towered over ten meters high, creating a natural gate.
Gu Zheng's innate combat instincts had not been stirred like this in years! It seemed they were in for a fierce battle today!
Shen Jingyu surveyed the surroundings and scoffed, "Not necessarily! You haven't been on the battlefield for years; this little trick is child's play—I can handle it alone."
Gu Zheng raised an eyebrow. "Young man, don’t be too arrogant! This is tactical warfare; how do you know there won’t be traps waiting behind? Wolves in front and tigers behind, with a mouse king in between. Inside are just a few hunting rifles and some civilian traps—nothing to fear. My grandfather told me that before I left."
Gu Zheng wondered why the old man hadn’t informed him. As a high-ranking official, he couldn’t afford to lose face. He couldn’t underestimate those hunters; after all, the beasts in these mountains were far more ferocious than humans! They had been hunting for years, their speed and strength honed to perfection.
Shen Jingyu quietly took out a new type of weapon from his bag: an Anesthetic Dart. "Uncle, get ready. We need to cross this gate in ten minutes; we must reach the center of the village before dark."
Finding people was still a challenge. It was said they would hide in the mountains, rarely showing themselves in the village. At that moment, Gu Shouzhang realized he had come unprepared.
"Uncle, have you been in leadership for too long? You came out with me without any preparation?" Shen Jingyu seized the opportunity to make a sarcastic remark.
Gu Zheng, a prominent leader, felt embarrassed. Thankfully, it was just the two of them on this trip. "Cough, cough! You shouldn’t say such things here; I won’t lecture you this time! Just keep your comments to a minimum once we’re out."
"I never say what I shouldn’t say! Unless it’s absolutely necessary!" Shen Jingyu replied.
He readied himself and stealthily approached. The pack of hungry wolves appeared sluggish, but once they caught a whiff of human scent, they would spring into action. A whole row of them lay in wait, and as he neared the gap between the two mountains, he could see a spacious area behind it with some cubs.
One by one, they were strikingly different—some snow-white, some grayish, and others mixed in color. Yet they all shared one trait: their eyes glowed with a fierce green light when they stared.
As Shen Jingyu took a few steps from the side, he realized he couldn’t get any closer. It was fortunate that there were hardly any modern surveillance devices around; otherwise, their presence would have already been reported.
However, he underestimated how perceptive these animals were. Just as they appeared, wolves had already dashed back to the village to relay the news in their own way!
Shen Jingyu lit an Anesthetic Dart and slowly threw it from afar. A cloud of white smoke enveloped the area as he donned his mask, clearly witnessing one wolf after another collapsing.
He gestured to Gu Zheng behind him; they needed to move quickly since the anesthetic wouldn’t keep them unconscious for long. The pack of wolves launched an attack; while Shen Jingyu and Gu Zheng could ensure their own safety, it was uncertain whether these wolves would survive unscathed.
This place had been well-managed. In a sense, they were reluctant to disturb this tranquility.
However, out of necessity, they slowly infiltrated the area and soon discovered that it was actually quite well-maintained inside. Each household had installed solar panels, but it seemed that satellite signals could not reach this place; this appeared to be its only shortcoming.
As for other aspects of life here, they looked rather primitive, yet there were hints of modern elements mixed in. Almost as soon as the two of them exposed themselves at the door of the first house, the villagers erupted into a commotion and rushed over.
These people appeared simple and honest, but in their hands were either sickles or hoes, and each face bore a strong expression of exclusivity.
"Who are you? Why are you here?" One person spoke in Mandarin, barely understandable.
The rest of the conversation was largely incomprehensible, filled with dialects that even someone as linguistically skilled as Shen Jingyu found challenging to decipher.
They were saying that he resembled someone, not realizing that the high-ranking official beside him could understand.
"Uncle! Nephew is indeed lacking compared to you; I truly feel ashamed!" Shen Jingyu responded to the first questioner. "What just happened between Uncle and Nephew was merely a misunderstanding!"
"It's simple! It's just dialect! I can still distinguish it!"
"We're here to find someone! A person who looks very much like me!" Shen Jingyu replied to the first questioner.
"There’s no one here who looks like you! Our village is not under the control of any outside authority. No matter how you got in here, if you leave immediately, we won't point our guns at you."
"Otherwise, we won’t allow any outsiders to relay information about this place to the outside world!"
"So, do you really trust me enough not to share news about this place?" Shen Jingyu asked. "You should know that if you let me go, your area might soon face issues regarding territorial division!"
From the expressions in their eyes, Shen Jingyu could tell that they seemed wary of his presence and did not want to take action against him.
