After enduring that bloody massacre, Leon, bearing scars and fatigue, led his family’s troops along the road to another key town.
Days of long travel had left both man and beast weary, yet Leon's gaze remained resolute, like a sharp sword piercing through the unknown fog ahead.
As the outline of the distant town gradually came into view, Leon straightened his back slightly. He knew that this town was crucial for the revival of his family. It was not only a hub for trade but also a key node connecting various forces.
As they drew closer, the town's gates became clearly visible. The tall gates were tightly shut, and the guards on the walls watched them warily. Leon signaled for his troops to halt and rode forward a few steps, calling out loudly, "We are members of the Leon family. We have come to discuss cooperation with your city to jointly resist external threats!"
After whispering among themselves, the guards slowly lowered the drawbridge and opened the gates. Leon led his troops in an orderly manner into the town. Upon entering, they were greeted by a bustling atmosphere. Shops lined both sides of the street, and the shouts of vendors mingled with the footsteps of passersby, creating a lively scene. However, Leon keenly sensed an undercurrent of unease and vigilance beneath this seemingly prosperous facade.
"My lord, the atmosphere here seems a bit off," Alex said softly, his eyes revealing caution.
Leon nodded slightly. "Yes, we must proceed with caution. Remember, our purpose is to seek cooperation, not to provoke conflict."
They continued forward until they reached the central square of the town. A large crowd had gathered there, and as they saw Leon and his men clad in armor and wielding weapons, whispers erupted among them. Leon reined in his horse and dismounted, stepping toward the crowd in an attempt to calm their emotions.
"Everyone, we of the Leon family mean no harm. In these turbulent times for the kingdom, we hope to join hands with your city to maintain peace and prosperity in this land," Leon's voice was loud and sincere, his eyes reflecting determination and friendliness.
An elder stepped forward from the crowd, scrutinizing Leon before speaking. "The Leon family? We have heard of your name. But in these chaotic times, who can guarantee that you are not here to expand your influence?"
Leon smiled gently and replied, "Elder, I understand your concerns. But please believe that we come in good faith to seek cooperation with your city. Our family has suffered heavy losses in previous battles, yet we have never abandoned our belief in protecting this land."
Leon’s words seemed to resonate with some in the crowd, easing the tense atmosphere. Just then, a middle-aged man dressed in splendid attire emerged from among them, followed by a group of attendants.
"I am the Lord of this town," the middle-aged man said, a hint of arrogance in his eyes. "I heard that members of the Leon family have arrived, so I came to meet you."
Leon slightly bowed his head in respect. "My Lord, it is an honor to meet you. We have come to discuss matters regarding our joint efforts to fend off external threats and to promote trade relations."
The Lord frowned slightly. "Fending off external threats? This is no small matter. Moreover, what benefits can we gain from collaborating with you?"
Leon was well-prepared and elaborated on the various advantages of partnering with his family, including trade discounts and military support. The Lord listened intently, falling into deep thought.
While waiting for the Lord's response, Leon took the opportunity to observe his surroundings. He noticed that although the town appeared prosperous on the surface, there were significant vulnerabilities in its defenses. If an external threat were to invade, it would likely struggle to withstand the attack.
"My Lord," Leon said earnestly, "forgive my frankness, but it seems your town's defenses are somewhat weak. If we could collaborate with your family, we could assist in strengthening your defenses and ensuring the safety of the town."
The Lord's expression shifted slightly at this remark but quickly returned to calmness. "Your proposal requires consideration. Please find a place within the town to settle down for now."
Leon understood that this was a delaying tactic from the Lord, but he was not anxious. He believed that as long as he demonstrated sufficient sincerity and strength, he would be able to persuade the Lord to cooperate.
In the following days, Leon arranged for his troops to rest within the town while also engaging with various factions present in the city.
