The ballroom remained lively and bustling as Leon watched Edric make his way to the VIP section. He was just about to return to discuss the upcoming meeting with Theodore when, suddenly, the lights in the hall began to flicker. A piercing alarm shattered the melodic music and cheerful atmosphere.
Panic erupted among the guests; dancers in the ballroom halted, looking around in confusion. "What’s happening? What’s going on?" The cries of alarm echoed throughout the hall, plunging the entire space into chaos.
Leon felt a surge of dread. He quickly scanned the area, trying to identify the source of the alarm. To his horror, a group of individuals clad in black attire and masked faces surged through several entrances, brandishing sharp blades and glaring menacingly as they charged toward the crowd.
"Assassins! Everyone, hide!" Leon shouted, sprinting toward Theodore. He knew that amidst this turmoil, ensuring Theodore's safety was paramount; they were the core of their family's revival.
Theodore, pale from shock at this sudden turn of events, steadied himself upon seeing Leon rushing toward him. "Leon, what’s going on?" he asked anxiously.
"Don’t worry about that now! We need to get out of here!" Leon grabbed Theodore's arm and pulled him toward a side exit. However, it seemed the assassins were well-prepared; soon, several blocked their path.
"Trying to escape? Not so easy!" one of the assassins snarled, swinging a long knife at Leon. Leon sidestepped effortlessly, avoiding the attack while drawing his own sword to engage in fierce combat with the assailant.
During the fight, Leon noticed that these assassins were exceptionally skilled, clearly trained for such encounters. Yet he felt no fear; with his superior swordsmanship and agility, he gradually gained the upper hand. Seizing an opportunity, he thrust his sword into an assassin's arm, causing a scream as the weapon clattered to the ground.
Taking advantage of the brief confusion among the attackers, Leon pulled Theodore along and broke through their blockade, continuing toward the side exit. The situation in the ballroom worsened; guests were fleeing in all directions amidst screams and cries. Some terrified ladies had collapsed on the floor while a few men attempted to grab nearby objects as makeshift weapons to confront their attackers.
Finally reaching the side door, Leon found it locked. "Damn it!" he muttered under his breath as he pushed against it with all his strength but it wouldn’t budge.
"What do we do now, Leon?" Theodore's voice carried a hint of despair.
Leon quickly scanned their surroundings and spotted a window nearby. "We can get out through here!" he declared, smashing the glass before climbing through. He then helped Theodore jump out after him.
As soon as they landed, they heard shouts from behind: "They escaped through the window! Quick, chase them!"
Leon grabbed Theodore and they ran deeper into the estate's garden. The garden was shrouded in darkness, illuminated only by the faint glow of the moonlight on the ground. They weaved through the bushes and trees, trying to shake off their pursuers.
"Leon, we can't keep running like this. They'll catch up to us sooner or later," Theodore panted.
While running, Leon contemplated their next move when he suddenly spotted an abandoned warehouse ahead. "Let's hide in there," he pointed towards the building.
They reached the warehouse and Leon pushed the door open with all his strength. A musty smell filled the air as they entered, surrounded by piles of clutter. They crouched behind a stack of wooden crates, holding their breath.
Before long, footsteps echoed outside the warehouse. "They must be nearby; search carefully!" a voice commanded.
Leon and Theodore gripped their weapons tightly, their heartbeats loud in the silence of the warehouse. They knew that if the assassins found them, the consequences would be dire.
Minutes ticked by as the assassins searched outside. Eventually, it seemed they had not discovered any trace of them, and their footsteps began to fade away. Leon and Theodore let out a sigh of relief, but they understood that the danger was not yet over.
"We can't stay here for long; we need to leave the estate and find a safe place to hide," Leon whispered.
Theodore nodded in agreement. The two cautiously stepped out of the warehouse and resumed their flight.
On this terrifying night, they had no idea what awaited them, but one belief burned in their hearts: survival—for the revival of their family and for their own futures.
