The company has been operating for over a year now.
I stood on the stage at the company’s annual meeting, looking at the familiar faces in the audience, filled with gratitude. This year, we went from being unknown to winning multiple industry awards, and our user base surpassed ten million.
"Congratulations." Gu Yuan approached with a glass of champagne, a faint smile on his lips. "You did it."
I raised my glass and clinked it gently with his. "You played a part in this too."
Throughout the year, whenever I faced difficulties, he always appeared at just the right moment to offer me the help I needed most. He didn’t take over everything; instead, he provided guidance when it mattered most.
"President Lin, something's wrong!"
Xiao Wang rushed over, interrupting our conversation.
"Meili Hui has been exposed for a scandal! They've been engaging in false advertising and are even suspected of commercial defamation!"
I set my glass down and hurried to my office. Opening my computer, I saw that major media outlets had already begun reporting on the incident.
It turned out that Li Qiang had hired people to smear other brands and falsified user data to deceive investors in order to suppress competition. Now that the truth was out, several brands were preparing to file a joint lawsuit.
"You knew about this earlier?" Gu Yuan had somehow appeared behind me.
I nodded. "I had my suspicions, but I didn’t expect him to go this far."
"Do you need my help?"
"No need; let him handle this himself this time."
I shut down my computer and gazed out the window. The night was deepening, and the city lights twinkled like stars scattered across the sky.
Suddenly, a warm hand rested on my shoulder.
"Don't think too much. Let's go eat," Gu Yuan said.
Over the past year, we often dined together. After every work meeting, he would take me to try different cuisines. From street-side eateries to Michelin-starred restaurants, from traditional Sichuan dishes to innovative creations.
He always managed to accurately capture my taste and remember my preferences.
This kind of delicate thoughtfulness was something Li Qiang had never given me.
"What are you thinking about?" Gu Yuan's voice pulled me back to reality.
We were sitting at a terrace restaurant by the river, the night breeze gently brushing against us, and the moonlight soft and inviting.
"I was thinking about how I would be now if you hadn't shown up at the wedding a year ago."
Gu Yuan set down his wine glass. "You would have found your own path eventually."
"Why do you say that?"
"Because you are Lin Wei." He looked directly into my eyes. "You are much braver than you think."
Under the moonlight, his gaze was particularly gentle. My heart suddenly raced.
"You know, that day at the wedding, I could tell right away that you didn't genuinely want to get married."
"Oh? Why?" I asked curiously.
"Because of your gaze," he said with a smile, "it is filled with unwillingness and struggle. That is not the look of a happy bride."
I was taken aback. It turned out that he had seen through my heart long ago.
"Actually, I've always wanted to ask you a question," I gathered my courage. "Why do you want to help me?"
He paused for a moment before replying, "Because I don't want to see a pearl buried in the mud."
My heart trembled.
"Lin Wei, I like you," he said softly. "Not because of your success, but because of your courage and strength."
The night breeze gently swept by, carrying the moisture of the river. I looked at the man before me, and a warm current surged within me.
This time, I had finally met someone worthy of lifelong trust.
"I like you too," I said.
Under the moonlight, we exchanged smiles.
The answers to life turned out to be so simple.
