In the restaurant, my best friend and I sat side by side, engrossed in our phones.
My friend Zhao Ya leaned over with a grin, pointing at my phone screen.
"This one is great! It makes you look like a fairy. Just post this one!"
I glanced down and saw a photo of myself standing against the red walls of the Forbidden City.
The sunlight was casting a warm glow on me, giving off a sense of tranquility and beauty.
I nodded and selected a few scenic photos taken at the Great Wall and the Temple of Heaven to share on my social media.
Not long after I posted, my phone buzzed.
It was Sun Yu.
"Lin Wan'er, what do you mean by this?"
On the other end, Sun Yu's voice sounded particularly furious.
"You went to Beijing for fun without telling me?"
"And you posted it online—are you trying to make me angry?"
I responded calmly.
"Why should I tell you?"
"It's perfectly normal for me to travel with friends, isn't it?"
His suddenly raised voice pierced through the quiet restaurant.
"Weren't we supposed to go to Beijing together and have a good time?"
"And you said that when we have kids, the three of us would climb the Great Wall together."
"Lin Wan'er, have you grown wings now? You can't even discuss this kind of thing with me?"
His questioning tone felt incredibly sarcastic to me.
I let out a cold laugh.
"Sun Yu, how dare you bring that up?"
"Who was it that kept making excuses, saying they would definitely go next time?"
"I've mentioned it to you countless times, and every time you found various reasons to refuse."
"Now that I'm out with friends, you're suddenly unhappy?"
"Sun Yu, do you remember that one National Day holiday when I asked you to accompany me? What did you say?"
"You said Han Xue had been burned and needed someone to go to the hospital with her. You claimed she would be bored alone, so you stayed with her in the hospital for an entire week. But it was just a small blister!"
Those once-sweet promises had turned into sharp knives, slicing through my heart piece by piece.
On the other end of the line, Sun Yu fell silent.
"If you have nothing else, I’ll hang up now."
Without waiting for his response, I hung up the phone.
My best friend looked at me with concern.
"Wan'er, are you okay?"
I shook my head and forced a smile.
"I'm fine, just a bit tired."
"Actually, I knew all along."
"He and that childhood friend are not just ordinary friends."
My best friend held my hand, her tone firm.
"Wan'er, you can't keep going on like this."
"What meaning does this marriage even have anymore?"
"You deserve better. You're still young; you can start over completely."
"How about we go out for a bit to clear our minds?"
"Anywhere you want to go, I'll accompany you."
I nodded.
"Okay, let me think."
"Maybe it's time to put an end to this."
When I returned home and opened the door, I was taken aback.
In the living room, Sun Yu was sitting side by side with a woman.
It was Han Xue.
Seeing me come back, Sun Yu hurriedly stood up, and Han Xue also rose, a hint of grievance on her face.
"Wan'er, you're back."
"Um, there was a burst pipe at my place, and it won't be fixed anytime soon, so..."
"So Ah Yu let me stay here for the night," Sun Yu quickly explained.
"Wan'er, please don't misunderstand."
"She’s just a girl with nowhere to go at night, so I let her stay at our place for one night."
"I’ll make sure she leaves first thing in the morning."
I looked at the two of them—one feigning innocence, the other busy explaining—and found it amusing.
I responded lightly, my tone revealing no emotion.
"It’s fine, you two do as you wish."
With that, I walked straight toward the bedroom.
Sun Yu followed me.
"Wan'er, you... you don’t mind, do you?"
I turned around to look at him.
"I don’t mind."
He seemed to breathe a sigh of relief.
"I knew you were the most understanding."
I didn’t say anything more and turned to enter the study.
I needed some quiet time to think about what to do next.
Sun Yu, did you really think I didn’t know anything?
The door to the study slowly closed behind me.
This night was destined to be sleepless.
