Wen Yan's body trembled slightly as she tightly held onto Nuan Nuan, tears welling in her eyes but unable to fall.
"Shi Shen would do anything for you," Mother Shen said, her voice shaking. "He even... he even did it for you..." Mother Shen choked on her words and could not continue.
Wen Yan lifted her head to look at Mother Shen, realizing that Nuan Nuan was Jiang Chen's child, and could never belong to Shen Shi.
She lowered her head, unable to meet Mother Shen's gaze.
Mother Shen's eyes fell upon Nuan Nuan, her expression a mix of disgust and pity. After a moment of silence, she slowly said, "Leave! I don't want to see you!" Mother Shen pointed towards the door, her tone resolute.
Tears streamed down Wen Yan's face as she choked out, "Mother-in-law, I know I have wronged him, but... but I really want to see him just once."
"Don't mention him!" Mother Shen suddenly stood up, her voice sharp. "How dare you bring him up? Do you think you deserve him?"
Wen Yan's face turned even paler, her lips trembling slightly, yet she found herself unable to retort.
Her body quivered again as she lowered her head, too afraid to look into Mother Shen's eyes.
"Just go." Mother Shen pointed at the door again, her tone icy. "I don't want to see you!"
As she spoke, Mother Shen began to choke up, tears streaming down her wrinkled cheeks.
Wen Yan raised her head, a glimmer of despair in her eyes. "Mother-in-law, I... I just want to..."
"What do you want? What else do you want from the Shen family?" Mother Shen pressed on relentlessly, her gaze piercing. "You have already caused my son’s death; what more do you want?"
Wen Yan's expression changed, and she found herself at a loss for words. She held onto Nuan Nuan tightly, as if clinging to her last lifeline.
"What are you still standing there for? Get out!" Mother Shen pointed at the door, her voice sharp.
Taking a deep breath, Wen Yan suppressed the pain in her heart and turned to leave.
"Wait." Mother Shen suddenly spoke up.
"Mother," Wen Yan raised her head, her tone firm, "I want to see Shi Shen."
"I want... I want to apologize to him."
Mother Shen was taken aback, looking Wen Yan up and down as if seeing her for the first time. "See Shi Shen? You still want to see him?" There was a hint of mockery in Mother Shen's tone.
Wen Yan nodded, a complex emotion flashing in her eyes.
Nuan Nuan, startled by Mother Shen's shout, began to cry in fear.
After a moment of silence, Mother Shen finally nodded. "Fine, I'll take you." She stood up and walked to the door, putting on her coat.
Wen Yan felt both fear and anticipation in her heart as she held Nuan Nuan tightly and followed Mother Shen out of the house.
Mother Shen approached Wen Yan, her gaze icy. "Come with me."
The car eventually stopped in front of a cemetery. The night enveloped the graveyard, making it appear particularly eerie.
She held onto Nuan Nuan tightly, her palms slick with sweat.
As she looked at the densely packed tombstones before her, a wave of fear surged within her.
Wen Yan clung to Nuan Nuan, uneasily following behind Mother Shen. The sound of her high heels clicking against the gravel path felt jarringly out of place amidst the surrounding silence.
In the cemetery, the cypress trees stood solemnly, and the faint scent of incense hung in the air, adding to the heaviness of the atmosphere.
Wen Yan instinctively pulled her coat tighter around herself; the chill of late autumn seeped through the thin fabric, causing her to shiver involuntarily.
"We're here." Mother Shen stopped walking, her tone cold.
Wen Yan lifted her gaze, her eyes landing on the tombstone in front of Mother Shen. There, Shen Shi was captured in a suit, a familiar gentle smile gracing his lips. The person in the black-and-white photo seemed as if he would come to life at any moment and call out to her, "Yan Yan."
Wen Yan's breath caught in her throat, and her bag slipped from her hand, hitting the ground with a dull thud.
"N-no... it can't be..." Wen Yan murmured to herself, staggering back a step. Her high heels crunched on the fallen leaves, producing a soft rustling sound.
