The car finally came to a stop in front of a cemetery. The night enveloped the entire graveyard, making it appear particularly eerie.
Wen Yan held onto Nuan Nuan tightly, her palms slick with sweat.
As she gazed at the densely packed tombstones before her, a sense of fear began to rise within her.
She clung to Nuan Nuan, uneasily following Mother Shen, the sound of her high heels clicking against the gravel path starkly contrasting with the surrounding silence.
In the cemetery, the solemn cypress trees stood tall, and the faint scent of incense hung in the air, adding an extra layer of heaviness.
Wen Yan instinctively pulled her coat tighter around herself; the chill of late autumn seeped through the thin fabric, causing her to shiver involuntarily.
“We're here,” Mother Shen said, stopping in her tracks with a cold tone.
Wen Yan lifted her gaze, her eyes landing on the tombstone in front of Mother Shen. There, Shen Shi was dressed in a suit, a familiar gentle smile gracing his lips. The person in the black-and-white photo seemed as if he would come to life any moment and call out to her, “Yan Yan.”
Wen Yan's breath caught in her throat as her bag slipped from her hand and fell to the ground with a dull thud.
“No… it can't be…” Wen Yan murmured to herself, stumbling back a step. Her high heels crunched on the fallen leaves, producing a delicate sound.
The name “Shen Shi” was clearly visible on the tombstone, and the dates engraved below struck Wen Yan's heart like a heavy blow.
Shen Shi lingered beside Wen Yan, watching her disbelief unfold, and an indescribable bitterness surged within him.
He longed to reach out and hold her, to tell her that he had always been there, but he could do nothing but watch as Wen Yan crumbled.
Wen Yan looked at the photo, and tears finally streamed down her face. She held onto Nuan Nuan tightly, her body trembling slightly.
Memories of the moments spent with Shen Shi surged like a tide; Shen Shi still wore that gentle smile, as if he were watching her.
Wen Yan could no longer hold back her tears. She embraced Nuan Nuan and knelt before Shen Shi's gravestone, crying out loud.
"Shen Shi, I'm sorry... I'm so sorry..." Wen Yan repeated those three words over and over, as if trying to express all her regrets.
"Mother-in-law, I..." Wen Yan wanted to explain but didn't know where to start.
"Don't call me mother-in-law!" Mother Shen interrupted her. "I don't have a daughter-in-law like you!"
In the tense atmosphere, Nuan Nuan suddenly spoke up: "Grandma, I want Daddy."
Mother Shen paused for a moment and looked at her. "This is Shi Shen."
"Nuan Nuan... is also Shen Shi's child..." Wen Yan's voice was barely audible, like a whisper.
Nuan Nuan looked at the crying Wen Yan and reached out her small hand, gently patting Wen Yan's cheek as if to comfort her.
Mother Shen stood aside, watching Wen Yan and Nuan Nuan with a gaze filled with complex emotions.
"Ah—" Wen Yan let out a heart-wrenching cry as she suddenly knelt before the tombstone, her trembling hands brushing against the cold stone surface, tears blurring her vision.
For two years, she had thought Shen Shi was just sulking, deliberately avoiding her. It was only at this moment that she truly realized Shen Shi was gone, forever gone.
"Shen Shi, why... why did you have to die? Why... did you leave me..." Wen Yan cried until her voice was hoarse, her body shaking violently as she repeatedly murmured "why."
Beside her, holding the warm little girl, Mother Shen watched Wen Yan's "performance" with cold eyes, her face betraying no emotion.
She slowly crouched down and spoke to the little girl in a frigid tone, "Nuan Nuan, this is your father. He is dead and you will never see him again."
Nuan Nuan looked at the photo on the tombstone and then at the sorrowful Wen Yan, her small face filled with confusion as she innocently asked, "Mommy, why did Daddy die?"
Wen Yan could not respond; she simply shook her head while clutching the tombstone.
