The family spent over two hours enjoying their meal before reluctantly leaving. Why did they leave? It was simply too delicious, and they were stuffed, unable to eat another bite!
By the time they stepped outside, it was already around nine o'clock, and the sky had completely darkened. The streetlights illuminated the area outside, making it seem relatively bright. However, once they entered their neighborhood, a different scene unfolded.
Due to the lack of streetlights and the sparse population, the little light that shone from the windows made the path ahead appear dim. Standing there felt like being in total darkness; one could hardly see their own hand in front of their face.
As they reached a fork in the road and gazed into the darkness ahead, Xu Wenzhao pulled out a flashlight. In an instant, a small gray patch of light appeared on the pitch-black pavement.
They had barely taken a few steps when Xu Nancheng felt something soft tugging at his arm. Looking to the side, he saw Lin Menghan tightly clutching his right arm with both hands, her face pressed against him as she shrank behind him.
He noticed that the girl beside him was trembling, her footsteps slowing down. Hmm? Was Lin Menghan afraid of the dark?
He instinctively slowed his pace, observing the shivering girl beside him. A protective instinct began to rise within him.
"Wait a moment, Mom and Dad," he called out to Xu Wenzhao and Lin Zhen, who were moving ahead without a care.
"What's wrong, Lin Menghan?" He softened his tone, which was usually rough and inconsiderate, now filled with concern.
"It’s so dark here!" Lin Menghan stammered, her voice trembling uncontrollably.
"Are you really afraid of the dark?"
Lin Menghan didn’t answer but simply nodded her head.
Xu Nancheng exchanged glances with the others; none of them had realized that someone could be so terrified of darkness.
In truth, many people are afraid of the dark; it’s just that those around them often aren’t, making it hard for them to understand such fear.
"Don’t be scared, Lin Menghan! Auntie is here," Lin Zhen said softly as she approached and gently patted Lin Menghan's back to comfort her.
"That’s right! Uncle is here too! I’m a police officer; who would dare harm our Lin Menghan? I’ll take care of them!" Xu Wenzhao's deep voice resonated with strength, providing a sense of security.
Despite this reassurance, Lin Menghan’s grip on Xu Nancheng's arm remained tight but slightly relaxed as her fear lingered.
"Let’s go!" Xu Nancheng said softly as he prepared to step forward. However, as he took a step, he realized that Lin Menghan was still holding onto his arm tightly as if fearing that if she let go, she would lose her support.
He paused for a moment to think.
A surge of impulse to comfort Lin Menghan welled up within him, prompting him to slowly extend his right hand. After a brief pause in the air, it gently landed on Lin Menghan's head. His left hand softly caressed her silky, jet-black hair, each movement imbued with endless tenderness and concern. "It's alright, I will protect you too!" The words flowed from his lips with an unexpected gentleness, making it hard to believe they came from Xu Nancheng, who was usually as cold as ice.
Lin Menghan tilted her head slightly upward, her gaze fixed on Xu Nancheng's eyes. The boy before her exuded a steadfast and resolute aura, like an unassailable fortress, instilling an overwhelming sense of security.
"Is that really true?" she asked, her voice trembling slightly as tears welled up in her eyes once more.
"Yes! I will definitely protect you!" Xu Nancheng nodded without hesitation, his tone firm and unwavering.
As soon as he finished speaking, Lin Menghan could no longer contain the torrent of emotions surging within her and suddenly burst into tears.
"Huh? Why is she crying all of a sudden?"
Could it be that his earlier words had such a profound impact on her? Just as Xu Nancheng was lost in thought, Lin Menghan's next words left him utterly stunned.
"Then can you hold me? I'm scared," she whimpered, her voice growing fainter as if consumed by an endless fear, leaving only soft sobs behind. She clung tightly to Xu Nancheng's arm, seemingly seeking warmth and comfort from him.
Upon hearing this, Xu Nancheng was completely taken aback. His eyes widened in disbelief. In that moment, he felt his face burn with embarrassment and his heart raced uncontrollably.
Hold a girl? For someone who had never even touched a girl's hand before, this felt more daunting than climbing to the heavens. Moreover, with his parents right there beside them, how could he dare to engage in such intimate behavior? Xu Nancheng's heart was filled with conflict and turmoil; he even regretted saying those words earlier.
Meanwhile, Lin Lin Mu, who had been so caring towards Lin Menghan just moments ago, now stared at Xu Nancheng with a strange expression. They never expected that their seemingly honest and straightforward son would so quickly engage in such close contact with Lin Menghan. Had they misjudged him all along?
Xu Nancheng sensed his mother's gaze upon him and felt himself stiffen. He slowly lifted his head to meet her eyes, filled with innocence and anxiety.
He opened his mouth to explain but found that his throat felt stuffed with cotton; no sound came out.
Inwardly he lamented: "This is unfair! It was Lin Menghan who asked me to hold her; it has nothing to do with me!" But faced with the current situation, no matter how many times he tried to explain himself, it would be futile.
Fortunately, Lin Lin Mu did not scold him excessively. They exchanged glances, thinking that since the two children liked each other, as long as things didn't go too far, they should let them develop freely. Perhaps this way, Xu Nancheng would learn to be more considerate of others' feelings.
It was also fortunate that Xu Mu had a relatively open mindset; otherwise, Xu Nancheng might have ended up with a few broken ribs today.
They nodded at each other and chose to turn a blind eye to the situation.
Even Xu Nancheng realized that his parents were allowing this; he breathed a sigh of relief, having feared he might get his legs broken tonight.
The exchange of glances lasted only a few seconds, while Lin Menghan remained oblivious to their silent conversation as she continued to cry nearby.
Xu Nancheng became stammering at this moment.
Hearing this, Lin Menghan immediately let go and dove into Xu Nancheng's embrace, her head bumping right against his chin. She truly didn’t take her uncle and aunt's feelings into consideration at all.
