Lin Menghan remained silent, standing there like a statue, while Xu Nancheng also kept quiet, showing no new movements or expressions.
As time ticked by, the atmosphere grew increasingly awkward and tense. Finally, after what felt like an eternity, the uncomfortable silence was broken.
Lin Menghan sensed it was the right moment and gently turned off the weather report. Carefully, she picked up a small bowl and served herself a spoonful of Tomato Egg Soup. She turned around, her head slightly bowed as if feeling shy and nervous. Stepping lightly towards Xu Nancheng, holding the small bowl in her hands, she spoke in a voice so soft it was almost inaudible, “Would you like to try?”
Xu Nancheng nodded slightly in agreement. His gaze fell on the steaming bowl of soup as he took it from her hands, his fingers intentionally brushing against Lin Menghan's delicate and soft fingertips.
He brought the bowl close to his lips and gently blew on it to cool it down a bit. After that, he slowly took a sip, feeling the warm liquid slide down his throat, bringing with it a wave of satisfaction. The soup was incredibly delicious, perfectly salty while also carrying the unique sweet and sour flavor of tomatoes. Xu Nancheng closed his eyes to savor this wonderful taste, enjoying the dance of flavors on his tongue.
When he opened his eyes again, they sparkled with surprise. He couldn't help but exclaim, “Mmm! This is really good!” Before Lin Menghan could ask for his opinion, Xu Nancheng eagerly nodded repeatedly to express how much he enjoyed it.
“Really?” Lin Menghan’s eyes lit up at Xu Nancheng's praise.
“Yes!” His affirmative response made Lin Menghan feel immensely proud; after all, she had been cooking for over ten years!
As she spoke, she turned to serve more soup. Xu Nancheng stood beside her watching; he didn’t know why, but he felt a strong desire to learn how to cook as well.
“Lin Menghan, did you often cook before?” he asked.
“Yes! I used to be quite good at cooking,” she replied but hesitated before adding the last part, feeling a bit dishonest.
However, Xu Nancheng didn’t catch on. “That’s amazing! Let me help you serve,” he said quickly as he noticed she had already filled another bowl of soup and hurriedly took it from her hands to prevent her from getting burned.
He placed the soup on the table where there was already a serving of Fei Guo Rou.
“All done! Let’s eat!” Lin Menghan began dishing out rice.
“Hey Lin Menghan,” Xu Nancheng said suddenly, “the names of the main characters in your novel feel like us.”
Xu Nancheng had just realized this himself.
“Xu? Isn’t that your surname? And Han? Isn’t that Lin Menghan?”
“Lin? Isn’t that your surname? And Chen? Isn’t that Xu Nancheng?”
Lin Menghan paused for a moment while eating, her face slightly flushed, but she remained silent.
Xu Nancheng didn’t seem to notice.
“Hmm?” Lin Menghan said. “Oh! I can’t remember his name, so I just switched our names around. I thought he was going to stop me, but I was just curious if the male and female leads were based on them.”
From what Lin Menghan said, it seemed they weren’t.
“What do you mean?” Lin Menghan didn’t quite understand his thoughts.
“Nothing, nothing! Let’s eat!” Xu Nancheng said as he picked up his chopsticks and focused on his meal, not engaging in further conversation.
Lin Menghan tilted her head, wondering what he wanted to say. It felt strange.
As evening approached, Chen Yi had been waiting at the nearby intersection for a while.
“Hey, you’re here!”
“Of course! A son is still the best; he knows to wait for me,” Xu Dong laughed as he arrived.
“Watch it!” Chen Yi kicked at him playfully.
“Hey, hey, don’t really kick me! By the way, haven’t Nancheng and his sister arrived yet?” He quickly raised his hand to block the kick and changed the subject.
“Not yet! They’re probably still being lovey-dovey somewhere,” Chen Yi replied, putting his foot down while teasing Xu Nancheng about the two of them.
Xu Dong had figured it out: Lin Menghan liked Xu Nancheng, and Xu Nancheng definitely had feelings for Lin Menghan. He just didn’t know how they got together.
As a brother’s girlfriend, he couldn’t just swoop in and steal love away. He wanted to see Lin Menghan as a little sister—his own little sister.
But Chen Yi felt frustrated.
The two of them, along with Chen Yi’s girlfriend Shen Yaoqi, got along well; chatting with each other was completely normal.
A couple of days ago, they had gone out together, and while Xu Dong was chatting with Chen Yi’s girlfriend, he casually mentioned seeing Lin Menghan that day.
Without any ill intentions, Xu Dong inadvertently revealed Chen Yi’s thoughts about Lin Menghan to Shen Yaoqi.
As soon as Chen Yi returned after buying milk tea, he found himself bewilderedly scolded.
"What do you mean, Ah Yi?" Shen Yaoqi said, gripping Chen Yi's ear with a force that was anything but gentle.
"Ouch, ouch! Yao Yao, what are you doing? That hurts!" Chen Yi's expression turned colorful as he furrowed his brows tightly.
This commotion attracted a crowd of onlookers, eager to witness the drama unfold.
"Why are you even asking me? What do you want from me?" She completely ignored his protests and continued to tug at his ear, even spinning him around in the process.
"I didn't do anything!" Chen Yi quickly explained. "Yao Yao, is there some kind of misunderstanding?"
"Misunderstanding? Who is Lin Menghan?" Shen Yaoqi glared at him, her eyes blazing with fury.
Chen Yi's heart sank; he had a pretty good idea of what was going on. At that moment, he mentally cursed Xu Dong from top to bottom, but he only dared to do so in his mind—after all, his current girlfriend was far more formidable.
"No, Yao Yao, I just mentioned it casually! I didn’t think—" But before he could finish, Shen Yaoqi pulled harder, causing tears to nearly spill from Chen Yi's eyes.
"I'm sorry! I was wrong!" He was on the verge of kneeling down, his voice tinged with urgency and grievance.
"Hmph! Where's your sincerity? You think one sentence will get you off the hook with me?" Shen Yaoqi finally stopped tugging at his ear, placing her hands on her hips and striding away with determination.
"I really know I was wrong!" Chen Yi hurried after her, his tone growing more sincere. "Yao Yao, can you please forgive me?"
"Yao Yao, waah!" His voice began to quaver with the hint of tears, as if he had suffered a great injustice.
Shen Yaoqi walked ahead while Chen Yi closely followed like a loyal puppy, unsure of how to express his feelings. This scene made one wonder: love really does make people foolish.
That night, Chen Yi kept trying to appease her with sweet words and apologies that flowed endlessly from his lips.
