With a creak, the door opened. Lin Menghan stepped out and saw the mother and son sitting together.
Lin Zhen, noticing Lin Menghan's arrival, cleared his throat twice in a tactical manner and stood up. "I won't disturb you two any longer; I still want to hold my grandchild!"
Xu Nancheng felt a wave of nervousness wash over him as he intertwined his fingers. He had no idea if their earlier conversation had been overheard.
When Lin Menghan glanced at Xu Nancheng's face, she was taken aback. "Why is your face so red?"
She had been in the room and had spoken softly, so she hadn't heard their discussion.
Lin Menghan thought to herself, has Nancheng been scolded again? He must have been told off quite harshly! Suddenly, she felt embarrassed to face Xu Nancheng.
She walked over to him and gently touched his shoulder, her expression filled with concern. "Nancheng, are you alright?"
But she really shouldn’t feel any guilt at all!
Hearing her words, Xu Nancheng guessed that Lin Menghan hadn’t caught on to what had happened and awkwardly shook his head.
"Then let’s go cook! Uncle and Auntie will be home soon!" She took Xu Nancheng's hand and led him toward the kitchen.
Previously, it was usually Lin Zhen who cooked, but after Lin Menghan arrived, it became a joint effort between Lin Zhen and Lin Menghan. Today, however, Lin Menghan wanted to cook with Xu Nancheng.
This morning, they had eaten something simple—just noodles.
As they entered the kitchen, Lin Menghan suddenly remembered something and looked at Xu Nancheng with a warning gaze. "Nancheng, you must behave! Uncle and Auntie are still at home!"
Xu Nancheng stiffened for a moment; he realized she was worried he might take advantage of her like he did yesterday.
He quickly waved his hands. "I won’t! You have to trust me!"
Lin Menghan shot him a disdainful glance, her face clearly showing disbelief as if she were about to shout it out loud. But still, she decided to keep him around.
"Let’s heat the oil!"
The oil splattered in the pan with a sizzling sound.
She cracked the eggs into the pan with a sharp pop.
Finally, she added water, creating a mist that filled the air.
He watched Lin Menghan's lively figure and suddenly remembered her moments of sadness.
"Lin Menghan, why do you sometimes feel inexplicably sad?" he weakly asked from behind, unsure if he was asking the right question.
"Do I?" Lin Menghan tilted her head, pondering.
"You do! When we eat hot pot! And when we're outside the neighborhood at night! And also—"
"Ah! Don't ask! I don't want to hear it!" She hurriedly shook her head and covered her ears, her tone fierce.
"Han, I'm sorry! Please don't be angry! I won't ask anymore." Seeing her like this made him anxious, and he quickly wanted to rush over to pull Lin Menghan back.
He reached out but immediately remembered what she had just said and withdrew his hand.
"Lin Menghan," he gently called out from the side.
"It's nothing." She calmed down after a while.
"It's nothing... just that there was a guy with the surname Xu who treated me well, but he left." She took a moment to gather her thoughts before speaking slowly.
"He has the same surname as me?" Xu Nancheng looked at the girl in surprise.
She didn't answer but quietly gazed at Xu Nancheng. The earlier irritation had vanished, leaving only softness in her expression.
"Was he your ex-boyfriend?" Xu Nancheng's expression turned melancholic, his tone tinged with jealousy.
Lin Menghan immediately caught on; wasn't he feeling jealous?
Her expression shifted dramatically. "Nancheng? What's wrong? Are you jealous?"
Xu Nancheng's face turned red. "Who’s jealous? We don’t have anything between us!"
"Oh! Right, we have nothing between us. Why would you be jealous then?"
"Your face is all red! You're definitely jealous!" Lin Menghan pressed on relentlessly.
"It’s hot!" he replied instantly.
"I heard you talking in your sleep last night. I could hear it clearly!" She continued teasing him, not realizing her own face was turning red as well.
"Huh? What did I say in my sleep?" He wondered about the dreams he had, feeling a rush of excitement at the thought.
"It seemed like you were saying all kinds of sweet nothings."
He hesitated, wanting to say something more.
"Ah! The water is boiling!" Lin Menghan turned around and lifted the lid off the pot, nearly causing a flood.
"Noodles! Noodles! Hurry up!" she called out to Xu Nancheng.
"Oh, oh, oh." Xu Nancheng hurried to the cabinet, took out the noodles, and handed them to her.
"Great!" She focused on cooking the noodles.
She pulled out a handful of noodles and slowly placed them into the pot, stirring them a few times with chopsticks.
Xu Nancheng stood behind her, watching her petite figure. Suddenly, he blurted out, "I like you."
His voice was a bit soft, but the kitchen was small, and Lin Menghan heard him clearly!
She turned her head, her face already flushed. She only wanted to see his embarrassed expression again, but he never played by the rules.
It was puzzling; he was quite shy! How could he be so bold in this regard?
This left Lin Menghan shifting from being the proactive one to the passive one every time.
"Lin Menghan, I didn't—" Xu Nancheng had only been mumbling to himself quietly. Liking someone sometimes meant whispering softly like this.
He hadn’t intended for her to hear it, but she did.
His heart raced wildly, feeling like it might leap out of his throat; his breath was almost caught in his chest.
"Um, I do too, but you have to chase me once!" She buried her head low, not knowing where she found the courage to say that.
In truth, she wanted to agree so much. But if she just accepted it like that, it felt like she was giving in. She thought she should maintain some modesty.
However, Xu Nancheng didn’t think that way.
"Why do I have to chase you? You already said you do!"
But then he remembered what his mother told him: girls appreciate a sense of ceremony.
