Upon entering the Laboratory Building, Xu Nancheng immediately noticed the neatly arranged tables and chairs in a storage room. He spotted the Duty Teacher sitting at a table outside the door—a middle-aged man, tall and robust, with short hair and a stern gaze.
Xu Nancheng took a deep breath and slowly stepped forward, each step filled with hesitation. Finally, he stood before the Duty Teacher and nervously spoke, "Um, hello. Could I have a set of tables and chairs?"
His voice was hesitant, as if a thousand words were stuck in his throat, or like someone was forcing him to say something against his will.
The Duty Teacher looked up, his gaze landing on Xu Nancheng. With an impatient tone, he said, "Which class are you from? I need to make a record. This is a necessary procedure for receiving tables and chairs; there’s no room for negotiation." His sternness stemmed from the fact that he was usually quite relaxed until someone approached him.
Xu Nancheng remained tongue-tied, seemingly unsure how to answer the question.
Lin Menghan, standing nearby, could no longer bear to watch. She thought to herself: This guy speaks so smoothly when talking to me, yet here he is so timid and stuttering! Forget it! I'll speak for him.
Without hesitation, Lin Menghan interrupted Xu Nancheng and confidently addressed the Duty Teacher, "Hello, sir. We are from the senior class; our homeroom teacher is Guo Jianguo."
Xu Nancheng looked at Lin Menghan with an embarrassed expression.
Upon hearing the name, the Duty Teacher's face immediately brightened with a warm smile, and his tone softened: "Oh! So you’re from Vice Principal Kou's class! Please come in!"
He quickly stood up and warmly invited the two of them into his office.
Curious, Xu Nancheng tugged at Lin Menghan's hand and whispered, "Lin Menghan, how do you speak so fluently?"
Lin Menghan smiled slightly and replied softly, "Just keep a calm mindset and muster your courage; there’s really nothing special about it." She suddenly recalled her previous speaking experiences and added, "By the way, if you feel nervous when speaking on stage, try taking deep breaths and avoid direct eye contact with others. But don’t do that when communicating normally."
Xu Nancheng nodded earnestly, indicating that he would remember her advice. "Okay! I got it. Thank you, Lin Menghan."
"Why are you thanking me?" she thought. She didn’t want Xu Nancheng to express such polite gratitude; it felt distant. He was just being courteous and didn’t mean to create any distance between them.
At that moment, the Duty Teacher had already walked over to a stack of tables and chairs. He gently patted them and said, "Go ahead! Choose a set of tables and chairs that you like."
"Alright, thank you, sir," Lin Menghan politely thanked the Duty Teacher.
"You're welcome," he replied with a smile. "It's my duty. Since you're from Guo Jianguo's class, there's no need for formality."
They began selecting tables one by one—rejecting those that were uneven or wobbly or had graffiti stickers on them. The Duty Teacher simply clicked his tongue but said nothing more; after all, he still needed to be polite to students from their school.
Perhaps if he maintained good relations with their school by saying a few nice words, he might earn some recognition himself—though he knew that hope was slim.
"This one will do, sir! We'll take it!" Lin Menghan announced after finding a satisfactory set of tables and chairs as she waved goodbye to the teacher.
The quality of the tables and chairs was still very good, so they were quite heavy and substantial.
Lin Menghan lifted one and found it a bit cumbersome, struggling slightly. Xu Nancheng noticed her difficulty and offered, "Let me help you with that, Lin Menghan." As he spoke, he placed his hand on the table, taking the opportunity to give it a quick touch.
Lin Menghan's face instantly flushed with embarrassment as she softly reminded him, "But the teacher is still here!"
Xu Nancheng chuckled but didn’t respond. He stacked the tables and chairs together, grabbed the edge of one, and lifted it to carry away, with Lin Menghan walking beside him.
As they exited the classroom, they spotted Lin Zhen talking to Lao Ke in the corridor. Lin Zhen approached them and said, "Alright, I’ll be heading off now. You two make sure to study hard!" After bidding farewell to the teacher, he left the campus.
Once they moved the tables and chairs into the classroom, they didn’t know where to place them. Lao Ke frowned slightly; he was usually busy with school matters and didn’t pay attention to these trivialities.
At that moment, Xu Dong raised his hand. Before Guo Jianguo could even ask him to speak, Xu Dong eagerly suggested, "Teacher, let her sit between Xu Nancheng and Shen Yaoqi."
Guo Jianguo examined the spot carefully; it was indeed a good position. There was just enough room for another seat without obstructing the teacher’s normal passage.
"That’s a good idea. Lin Menghan, would you be okay sitting here?" Guo Jianguo asked after pondering for a moment.
"Sure!" Lin Menghan felt overjoyed at this arrangement. After all, Xu Nancheng would be right next to her, making it convenient for them to hold hands during class.
"Ah! What am I thinking?" Lin Menghan scolded herself internally. "School is a serious place for studying; how can I think about such silly things?"
Xu Nancheng's smile was radiant—one that most students had never seen before. It seemed he was not thinking about anything trivial at all.
Meanwhile, he thought to himself that Xu Dong was indeed a good brother and a great wingman!
Xu Dong’s suggestion made perfect sense; this way, Xu Nancheng could always be close to Lin Menghan while also being near Shen Yaoqi. Plus, he could gather information about Chen Yi—killing two birds with one stone!
Chen Yi understood the implication and gave Xu Dong a thumbs-up. Xu Dong grinned in response.
Once the tables and chairs were arranged properly, Lin Menghan sat down. "Hey! Xu Nancheng," she said sweetly, "I look forward to your guidance from now on!" Her bright smile warmed Xu Nancheng’s heart.
