After Xu Nancheng finished his speech, he stepped down from the podium. His body trembled slightly, as if he had just been hit by a cold gust of wind. His palms and soles were soaked, and cold sweat continued to seep from his back. Each breath felt particularly heavy, as if he were trying to inhale the entire world.
This was not due to any other reason but rather from overwhelming nervousness. Having experienced such intense anxiety, he had exhausted all his strength, leaving him feeling weak and powerless. At that moment, if he could, he would have liked nothing more than to collapse on the ground, close his eyes, and sleep for a year and a half until the college entrance examination was over.
As he returned to his spot in the classroom, passing by his classmates in front of him, their eyes sparkled with excitement. One of them exclaimed, "Wow! Xu Nancheng, you three were simply amazing!"
Another chimed in, "Yeah! So cool! While we’re just playing games at home, you guys went out to save people!"
Someone else lamented, "Yes, yes! The king of competition really does everything with such intensity!"
However, Xu Nancheng had no time to pay attention to the praise coming from around him. He felt dazed, as if everything was a dream, too afraid to recall what had just happened. His mind was still stuck in the tense moment of his speech, unable to recover immediately.
He staggered back to his position when someone nudged his shoulder. It was Lin Menghan, who handed him a bottle of water. "Nancheng, drink up! You look like you’re about to faint!"
Lin Menghan looked at Xu Nancheng with a mix of concern and amusement. She felt sorry for how he had been tortured but also found it funny that it was just a speech—he acted as if he had come from a battlefield.
He turned his head to look at Lin Menghan and smiled in response.
Taking the water bottle, he gulped down a mouthful. Ah, that felt good! It was incredibly refreshing! He thought to himself.
This wasn’t plain water; it was sweetened water—a common preference among some parents in small towns and rural areas. While others might spend two or three yuan on a drink, this sweetened water cost less than five yuan and still tasted great.
Many classmates were somewhat resistant to it; they felt it was beneath them. But for him, it was genuinely satisfying! It replenished his energy quickly.
"Nancheng, you still have some stamina left after all that time," Lin Menghan teased Xu Nancheng.
"Of course!" Hearing Lin Menghan say that made him feel as if he had just accomplished something monumental; his spirits soared even higher despite his voice trembling uncontrollably.
At that moment, how proud and self-satisfied he felt—he could almost fly!
"Oh really? Why are you panting while talking?" Lin Menghan grinned mischievously.
"Lin Menghan, don’t expose me like that." The mask of confidence had been ruthlessly stripped away; he felt embarrassed as he spoke softly to her.
"Tsk! I compliment you and you start panting!" Before she could finish her sentence, someone behind her tapped her shoulder.
She turned around to hear her classmate's warning: "Keep it down, new kid! If Saiban catches you later, it’ll be bad news."
"Saiban? Who’s that?" Lin Menghan asked with a puzzled expression; she didn’t understand where this Saiban had come from.
"You wouldn’t know since you just got here. Saiban is what we call our class monitor." As she spoke, the girl pointed toward a rather imposing-looking boy across the room who seemed a bit fierce but still quite handsome. "That one—he looks tough but is actually pretty cool!" The girl seemed a bit starstruck as she gazed at him.
"Pfft." Lin Menghan almost laughed out loud. "Do you believe that person would report me?"
"Huh? What do you mean?" The girl looked confused, her expression filled with questions.
"Hehe, he claims I'm his sister." Lin Menghan knew Xu Dong's temperament all too well. He was so fond of her that he wouldn't dare to complain about her. If she ignored him, his emotional breakdown would likely rival that of Xu Nancheng.
"What? You're his sister?" The girl clearly wasn't up to date with the news. Upon hearing this, she forgot all about class leaders and stared wide-eyed.
"Well, he insists on it, and there's nothing I can do." Lin Menghan waved her hand dismissively. She wasn't trying to show off; it just seemed unnecessary to keep it a secret, so she spoke the truth.
Having unexpectedly gained two older brothers felt pretty good, even if it was all a bit strange.
At that moment, she turned slightly to the side to make conversation easier, completely unaware of the shocked expression on the girl's face behind her. Otherwise, she would have burst out laughing.
After a moment of processing, the girl summarized the situation: Xu Dong, who looked fierce and seemed ready to fight at any moment, had recognized this girl as his sister and spoiled her? But why?
"But why?" The girl was filled with a million questions and kept asking incessantly.
"Well, how should I put it? He and Xu Nancheng are friends," Lin Menghan said as she nudged the boy beside her.
Xu Nancheng felt the gentle nudge and turned around to smile at Lin Menghan, his gaze filled with affection.
"What's up?" Xu Nancheng's response was soft and gentle, but when he caught sight of the curious glances from their classmates, his face flushed red and he began to look away shyly.
"Nothing much, just ignore me," Lin Menghan said quickly upon seeing his awkwardness. She wanted to send him off before things got too embarrassing.
"So that's how it is?" The girl understood instantly. Xu Nancheng liked Lin Menghan, and perhaps Lin Menghan liked Xu Nancheng too. Since Xu Dong hung out with Xu Nancheng, it made sense that he would treat Lin Menghan well.
Lin Menghan recognized what the girl was implying but didn't refute it; there was nothing hidden in her words.
Hearing this, a mysterious smile appeared on the girl's face.
"Hi new friend! I'm Wang Xinyue. What’s your name?" she asked earnestly. She felt that this girl had a nice temperament and could hold a conversation. Plus, having a good relationship with Xu Dong meant they could share some interesting stories.
"I'm Lin Menghan." She was delighted to make a new friend on her first day at school; her smile grew even brighter.
"Lin Menghan! Remember to take care of me from now on!"
"Yes! Let's look out for each other!"
