Before Lin Menghan could finish her words, an unusual sensation suddenly surged through her right hand. The touch was not rough; instead, it carried a faint warmth.
She looked down in astonishment and found her right hand firmly held by a familiar, strong hand—it was Xu Nancheng's hand! Indeed, Xu Nancheng had silently taken her hand once again!
"You..." Lin Menghan's eyes widened as she stared at Xu Nancheng.
"I want to hold your hand," he said softly, so quietly that Lin Menghan almost didn't catch it.
Lin Menghan scanned the classroom and realized there were indeed quite a few people around. A wave of indescribable embarrassment washed over her. This feeling made her restless, as if she had become the center of attention.
Instinctively, she shifted her right hand downward, trying to stack the hand that was being held. She murmured softly, "It wouldn't be good if others saw us like this!"
Xu Nancheng, hearing this, obediently moved his hand lower as well. Despite their efforts to hide it, their act of holding hands did not escape the notice of Shen Yaoqi and Chen Yi, who had been observing the situation closely.
A hint of confusion flickered in Chen Yi's eyes. He quickly got up and rushed over to Xu Nancheng's desk before class started, unceremoniously tapping his shoulder.
Immediately, the two hands that had been hidden under the desk jerked back as if shocked.
" Nancheng, come out for a second!" Chen Yi greeted Xu Nancheng and then turned to Lin Menghan. "Sister! Can I borrow Nancheng for a bit? Just wait a moment!"
"Okay." Lin Menghan lowered her head and unconsciously agreed as Xu Nancheng was dragged away by Chen Yi.
As they left, Chen Yi glanced back at Shen Yaoqi but only received a disdainful look in return, so he said nothing more.
Xu Dong saw the three of them sneaking around and hurriedly ran out of the classroom.
As soon as he exited, he heard, " Nancheng! What's going on? Holding hands?"
Xu Nancheng pursed his lips and replied, "Yeah."
"Huh? What? No way! Nancheng! You’re my hero!" Xu Dong exclaimed excitedly upon hearing the conversation between Chen Yi and Xu Nancheng.
"What hero? What are you talking about?" Xu Nancheng was still trying to grasp what was happening.
"You guys held hands! Just a few days ago you said you liked my sister; now you're already together! We thought you were dense, but it turns out we were the ones being dense!" Xu Dong was thrilled, almost believing that he himself had held a girl's hand.
"No, we’re not together yet. She just let me hold her hand; I still have to pursue her." Xu Nancheng honestly explained the situation to them.
"So you're saying my sister knows you like her, and she just gave it away?" Xu Dong quickly summarized.
"Uh, something like that. It's not exactly giving away." Xu Nancheng didn’t comment much on her attitude; he figured it was best to think of it that way for now.
However, Chen Yi's expression was not quite right. There was something I had to mention about Nancheng.
"What?" Xu Nancheng looked at his brother beside him with confusion.
"I mean, my sister is my girlfriend," Chen Yi said, a mischievous smile appearing on his face.
"What nonsense is this? Son, you’re spreading rumors! What are you going to do about Nancheng?" Xu Dong, hearing this, was furious and raised his fist, ready to hit him.
"Hey, hey, hey, don’t be hasty! Nancheng, I didn’t mean it!" Chen Yi quickly glanced over at Xu Nancheng.
Xu Nancheng looked back with anger, but there was also a hint of delight in his eyes—he was pleased to see Xu Dong wanting to hit Chen Yi.
"It’s a misunderstanding! I was just joking! Dongzi!" Chen Yi hurriedly covered his head, fearing he might actually get hit, and shouted loudly.
When he felt no pain coming from the expected blow, he slowly lowered his arms. Xu Dong’s fist was still suspended in the air, and Chen Yi let out a sigh of relief. "I told you so, Dong..."
Just then, that fist came crashing down. Chen Yi winced in pain and covered his face with a look of grievance directed at the two of them. "I said I was joking! I’m still with Yao Yao; how could I say something like that?"
"I'm sorry, Yi Ge; I was just joking too," Xu Dong said with a chuckle as he patted his hands together.
Chen Yi quickly got up, somewhat angry. "Is this how you joke around? It hurts!"
"Yeah, Yi Ge, that’s not how jokes work. What do you expect Nancheng to think?"
Chen Yi had just wanted to tease and see Xu Nancheng's reaction; he never expected that Xu Nancheng would actually get mad—and now Xu Dong was angry too. He knew he deserved a beating.
"I'm sorry, Nancheng; it wasn’t intentional. I just wanted to see your reaction," Chen Yi realized he had gone too far and felt the need to apologize.
"Forget it; I'm not really mad anyway—just don’t try to steal Lin Menghan from me!" His tone was firm, as if he were protecting a treasured possession.
"Since Nancheng has said so, then you should be careful!" Xu Dong refused to back down.
At that moment, a voice interrupted them: "What are you three dawdling around for? Class has started!" Everyone turned to see Guo Jianguo leisurely walking toward them from the end of the corridor. His steps were relaxed, and a faint smile graced his face as he joked with the three of them.
"Alright, we’re coming!" Xu Dong replied nonchalantly; he wasn’t intimidated by the old man—especially since he seemed so amiable.
The group walked into the classroom and took their respective seats.
Lin Menghan glanced over at them and seized the opportunity before the teacher arrived. "Nancheng, what were you guys talking about?"
"Well, it’s a long story; I’ll tell you after class," Xu Nancheng replied, feeling that this matter was too complicated to explain right now.
At this moment, Guo Jianguo slowly walked into the classroom and slammed his books onto the desk. "Class is in session!"
"Stand up!"
Teacher!
Classmates! Please take your seats!
